US Below Uzbekistan in Perceived Corruption
The Gallup Poll reported yesterday on interviews with 1,000 people in each of 101 countries.
The questions asked were
· Is corruption widespread throughout the government in your country?The United States ranks 19th right below Uzbekistan on this honesty scale.
· Is corruption widespread within businesses located in your country?
Also above the USA in perceived integrity are Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
In fact, Saudi Arabia ranked 5th after Finland, Denmark & New Zealand and Singapore.
My guess is that not all of the 1,000 people interviewed were from Illinois or the United States would have ranked even lower.

Polls such as these are great for yellow journalism but aren't particularly useful to figure out what's going on. Corruption is such a subjective term, for many it's merely the largesse attributed to political factions that aren't one's own.
That one person, or X percentage of the populace, perceives their government or society doesn't make it so. Maybe the results simply indicate that a larger fraction of the US population is cynical about their government and/or willing to publicly admit it.
Mayor Daley wants it this way, got a problem with that?
Time was that US business and politicos tried to hide their corruption. Now it's right in your face and "waddaya gonna do abodit." This just shows how little power the average honest citizen and voter has in the US. Our forefathers must be so proud.

It is a shame and dark mark on hard working Latinos. Daley thinks he is a third world dictator and promotes corrupt people as long as they are loyal to him and can produce during elections. The stealing is unparalled even in Chicago history, maybe quasi legally through contracts but it is amazing all of Daley's friends who are millionaires many times over.
It is vomittingly disgusting.
Todd Stroger winning just reinforces the corrupt reputation and will keep in corruption as long as possible.
