The Oddest Couple?

The hot rumor flying around Springfield and Chicago yesterday was that State Sen. James Meeks and Jim Oberweis were going to team up in a third-party run for governor and lite guv. Rumors were unclear as to who would play Batman and who, Robin. Heaven knows what sort of impact that would have on the race. Somehow it seems like it would be fitting for one of the weirdest political cycles at the statewide level in decades. (Awwwright...two years ago was pretty darn weird, too.)

Other rumors have Oberweis demanding support for state party chairman before giving his support to Judy Topinka.

More mundane, but solid, reports have Oberweis preparing a bid for Republican State Central Committeeman in the 14th Dist.

I don't know, I kind of like the Meeks-Oberweis rumor. Doubt it would go anywhere but sounds like Hollywood could make it into an intriguing "buddy" movie starring, say, Spike Lee and Billy Bob Thornton. Or perhaps you have a better casting idea...

Obie would have to be Lt. Guv because after you lose in a primary you can't run for the same office with another party.

Charlie,

I'm pretty confident that most conservative Christians would enthusastically vote for a Meeks/Obey ticket. In fact, we were laughingly discussing it the last few days.

Wow,

Dan

Wow, that's twice in two days that I have heard someone assume that "conservative Christians" walk, talk, look and act the same. I'm starting to wonder if I missed something in Sunday School where I was told how to act politically, because both times I was not in the supposed group.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting a little tired of the word Christian meaning conservative Republican (or fundamentalist, if you prefer). Just my take, but I don't think Jesus would be so closely identified with any party or political philosophy. When I read the scriptures, I see a man who spent his time caring for those that the conservatives in today's society tend to shun or ignore. Again, just my take and you can let the flaming begin. Actually, let's keep it biblical...start casting your stones...

Super ego and super-duper ego.

Which is which? Doesn't matter.

Ahh, wonderboy, it is not a matter of who Christ would side with. I have no doubt if He appeared, He would have corrective instructions for each of us. The difference is that the right would listen to Him while the left would tell Him to mind His own business and go back to where He came from.

We may err in knowing what Christ would have us do, but we do well in knowing that it is important.

Charlie, I find your statement that the left would turn Christ away to be incredibly indicative of the current state of conservatives. In one quick post, you have essentially stated that those who have liberal views are not followers of Christ. Amazing...incredibly wrong, but amazing.

Face it Charlie, there are liberals who know that the role of Christ in their lives is primary. Having a different view doesn't make you any less Christian, just like having concerns about our role in Iraq doesn't make you un-American (though many of your conservative brethren would tell me I just spoke heretical words).

Just let me throw out a name...Tony Campolo...and he is just one example. There are others, but I will let you respond to that first.

Just to make it clear...I consider myself to be a Republican and a Christian, but I don't let my theology become a servant of my ideology.

Just when I thought this state couldn't be a bigger political joke.

Charlie,
You of all people should know that Jim can't run for Governor again in the general, and that if they do pair up Jim would have to take the lite gov seat.

You're wrong Charlie, if Christ came down, the right would condem him for helping the poor, afterall the right says they should help themself.

You're so ignorant it's laughable.

Anon 7:22pm -

Who the heck is the "poor" anymore? Most people believe that the poor are the ones who should be eligible for social welfare programs. However, our brilliant governor Blagojevich says that someone who makes $70K should have the taxpayers subsidize their kids' health insurance costs.

But the AMT cut off is $92K according to the IRS. The purpose of AMT is to prevent the "wealthy" from taking advantage of their tax deductions.

So, liberal genius, which is it? What makes someone poor?
