John T. Kelly Will "Represent" the People of the 3rd District

This morning, my favorite Illinois newspaper The Daily Southtown endorsed John Sullivan as Democratic candidate for the the 3rd Congressional District. Do I need to call Mayflower, start packing, move and make room for more 'enlightened' emigrants from Evanston or is there a huge exodus from Hyde Park expected soon? Just asking, because the rationale for TDS's endorsement over Kelly seems to indicate that the voters of the 3rd District are not the people that the editorial board has in mind. Thus:

"But the Daily Southtown endorses Sullivan because we believe he can be a more dynamic lawmaker, and because we believe he is more in touch with mainstream Democratic Party ideals — not strictly those of the Bungalow Belt that is Lipinski's base. Sullivan supports universal health care and urges withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq in a year. He also backs emergency contraception, stem-cell research and abortion rights."

( Italics - my own) So our Congressional representative - SHOULD NOT - represent the views of the people HE REPRESENTS? What are 'mainstream Democratic Party Ideals?"

John Sullivan lives two blocks from me. I met him. Nice Enough. Never asked for my vote. Never saw him at any of the many, many, many fund-raising benefits that are so much a part of the mindset of our Bunglow Belt. Never heard of the guy flipping pancakes at the parish. I know he is on some public school councils - his name is anyway.

I have not seen ONE Sullivan lawnsign - heartbreaking. That is some endorsement. I love the Daily Southtown, but this One got hot Beverly Beverly Bean Haitian Blue up though my nasal passages. I might call one of those Progressive Democratic ambulance chasers from Evanston.

Perhaps Hickey should look at a map of the 3rd District. Look beyond his little world in Beverly. He sees local yard signs as significate in an election? You do not have to be a registered VOTER to put up a sign. I doubt Hickey has any idea how campaigns are won in the 21st century. With his myopic view of the world he should only comment on local races.

Hickey wants to take out the only Polish office holder left. The Irish and the 19th ward will have EVERYTHING. Heh heh heh heh

The Catholic Church, Bungalow home, football team, Parish parochial school, drinking, racism, blue collar, neighoborhood loyaltys, fist fights, loud talking

I suspect the person who posted the anonymous comments at 3:44 and 5:52 was Hickey himself. He lives in the old days. The neighborhood has changed. The 50's and 60s' are gone. We now know there is life beyond the parish. It's ironic he uses the internet to post his archaic ideas.

I post under my name dipstick. You, my oxygen deprived little friend, couldn't find a Chinaman on 22nd Street. Oh, my that sounds terribly archaic, but it'll do!

It's a 59% Kerry district, perhaps the District isn't as conservative as some argue.

Kerry votes alone are not the indication of conservatism.
It went 2 to 1 for Reagan.
Lots or pro-life, pro-traditional family Democrats who are also pro-union.

ArchPundit 4:09 PM

Kerry votes aren't an indication of conservatism, but Reagan votes are?

Perhaps changing demographics are the explanation given the State of Illinois has moved to be more solidly Democratic and liberal than it was during Reagan's elections. Kerry-Bush numbers are an excellent measure of conservative versus liberal actually. I'm a bit confused why 22 year old numbers are better than 1 year 3 month old numbers.

Archpundit,
Liberal and Conservative tags are just that - pro-union and pro-life voters are Democratic Party voters. The need to pigeon-hole people has been my Party's lunacy for too long. That is why a candidate like John Kelly drives the clip-board/earTelephone wonks nuts. Just reporting what I see and hear from voters.

Ambulance chasers,Oxygen deprived, wonks, dipsticks, lunacy: It appears what is seen and heard from voters is disreported via a very angry, narrow mind. The 3rd Dist is more than the 19th ward. Reporting on a limited area with a concentration of signs to claim knowledge of grassroots support is just dumb. Endorsements however do sway voters. The "bunGLOW belt" as spelled by Hickey, of years past has changed. And what is this fear of Evanston newcomers? Welcome to 2006!!

===Liberal and Conservative tags are just that

But votes are behavior, and a 59% Kerry vote is higher than all but one Republican District that went for Bush--19--that in Illinois. That's considered a safe seat for either party. If the District was as conservative as you are arguing the percentage would be far lower. Look at the District with the highest labor vote in the state--11. It was over 50% Bush. If you want to try and argue that a District is really conservative, some actual statistics based on voting behavior might help.

The District is a progressive district with two right wing Democrats running (though Lipinski is probably not even that other than Daddy told him to be) and one moderately liberal Democrat.

I'm guessing Lipinski will probably win--I certainly hope not, but given the name recognition and mediocre fundraising, it'll be tough to take him down. Regardless, Sullivan fits the profile of the District better than Lipinski or Kelly.

ArchPundit,

The poll conducted by the John Sullivan Campaign and its subsequent mailing reflect the strong NDP 'progressive' theme wanted by some people, but in all empirical honesty not the people doing the voting.

The voters in the 3rd are laughing at the polls and the smart money, but once the votes are cast all the polling and theme based propaganda go out the window.

All politics is local and the local folks did not care for enthronement of Dan Lipinski and remember that he can not tell you where he lives. Voters are put off by John Sullivan's very well-crafted ( slick) mailer - that does not contain his picture; opens to a banner 'window-sticker' that asks the voter to paste it to his front window but contains no application gum: " What? Am I suppossed to use my own scotch tape, hell, I can't even find the damn stuff after Christmas!" That don't get votes.

Annonymous 10:12,

Nice buckshot. Why do Progressives spew hate with such ease? Remember the flowers abd thebirds of air - this is only an election. It will be alright.

BTW - I am in good place; it is calm and mellow here in the 19th Ward of the 3rd District; it is a stone groove. Mean people suck.
