Acton Gorton's Blog

The ex-editor of the Daily Illini started a blog, and Zorn talks to Illini Media about why they fired him.

All the comments support support Illini Media's decision and are critical of Zorn. So I guess the 60's are really long gone.

Update and unrelated to Gorton: Here's McHenry's Gay Games debate in reverse.

What's the story, Bill?

I keep hearing how conservatives kids are now. Stanek says they are taking over? Is that true?

In the alternative, is it just that conservatives don't care about free speech?

Which is it? Are college conservatives silent and powerless, or do they just not care about freedom?

Bill Baar 8:58 AM

My nephew at U of I tells me it's a pretty liberal place. At least the political science department.

So a total of five comments from 3 people constitutes a declaration that the 60's are long gone. And your nephew's opinion of the Poly Sci department at U of I is, one guesses, gospel.

How like a right-wing nut to make generalizations based on such in- depth research.

Skeeter 9:18 AM

Bill,

Are you claiming that Stanek does not have her facts straight?

She insists that a new generation of right wing nuts is taking over and that liberals will be left in the dust.

Is she wrong?

That can't be. Not Stanek. She's the voice of calm in a sea of liberal madness. Please don't tell us that her stories of right wing dominance are a fabrication!

Must be true. His nephew told him!

Anonymous,  9:31 AM

Bill, do you work for a living or just blog?

Bill Baar 9:34 AM

C'mon...

I'm not pretending to write peer reviewed social science here.

I just read the morning news and speak my mind.

I went to school when kids were self-publishing all sorts of wild stuff, and firing a student editor would have brought out the protestors.

It's funny to see today what's orthodox and not --what's right and what's left-- and the attitude towards authority is all different.

There are no Abbie Hoffman's on the left anymore.

But you don't have to write every thought that comes to mind. Have a point. Do just a little research. Add something to the debate.

On the other hand, knee-jerk whacks like you and Stanek are the best thing that any Dem can hope for.

Anyone who demands points, research, and debate missed out on the 60s.

We would call you a a straight groveling at the power structure canning our editor.

It's not that he published them. It's how he published them that hasn't aroused that much support. A well thought out piece that included the cartoons, made a point, stirred something. That would have elicited support.

Gorton's problem is that he did nothing journalistic. I have no problem with the cartoons being run, but I'm not going to support some clown who simply ran them without addressing the core issue, without looking at the implications, without addressing the larger question of why no one was running them. That is what an editor is supposed to do. That's what good reporting is.

Some punk kid running the cartoons, just to do it, with no context or thought, that is why people aren't rushing to his defense.

Kids are still self publishing all sorts of things, some of good, most of it crap. When someone actually takes the time to do the work and present it in a thoughtful context, then they're worthy of support. Otherwise, they're just the college newspapereditor version of Baar, long on opinion, short on substance.

Bill Baar 10:16 AM

Anon,

You sound like a Taliban of the Prairie.

The "punk kid" poked at authority.

I get conservative with age, but not that conservative.

Anonymous,  10:23 AM

It's not conservative, it's being smart enough to poke at authority in a way that actually accomplishes something. Had he gone through the process to publish and been turned down, then he could have poked at authority all he wanted and maybe initiated a dialogue that might actually have some impact.

He's just like you. look at the blog post today, he leaves out the details that show how wrong he is. Makes it up as he goes along, or just plain lies. It's no wonder you're so enamored of him, he's your blowhard, unthinking progeny.

Bill Baar 7:53 AM

Peter Tatachell is a Gay Activists in Britian and a Green Party member. Here's his blog post in the Guardian on the Free Speech and support for Danemark rally in London.

It's kind of where I would expect the left to be these days.

Instead we've got our Gay Activists in Chicago waffling on Sister Muhammed and Farrahkan.

Like I say, the best of the 60s is gone and instead we've got the left defending the DI's right to fire the editor at will...

..the left is missing the real struggle.

Skeeter 8:52 AM

Bill,

In all seriousness, are you claiming that the right is dead on college campuses? That all the talk MUST BE from the left?

Why haven't we heard much from them? Or do you want to admit that the right simply doesn't care much about free speech issues?

Bill Baar 10:25 AM

Skeeter,

The slogans at the San Fran anti war demo was Support the Iraqi Resistance; Smash the Jewish State When Liberals take more seriously some of their allies in these demos, and show the courage to denounce, I'd feel differently. But you don't hear that often.

What I really think is the left isn't very left any more. It's lost all of it's Liberal values.

I haven't been on a college campus in years but I doubt the faculties are bastions of conservative thought, or even very welcoming to liberals and leftists sympathetic to the kind of ideas Tony Blair's been voicing in his recent speeches. Every Liberal should be reading those and asking themselves why they can't support Blair.

Skeeter 12:58 PM

Bill,
Thanks, but that does not really answer my question. I understand that you do not like "liberals." You have made that clear.

However, the question remains as to conservatives.

Where are they on campus?

Do they agree with the alleged liberals?

Are they simply powerless in the debate?

Why are they not as outraged as you claim to be?

Why are they apparently so weak?

Do you disagree with Jill Stanek and her claims of rising power for the right?

Bill Baar 1:43 PM

I admire Jill.

I'm a liberal.

I don't think you are.

I read this today in the Weekly Standard on the Dutch Child Euthanasia program.

Check the Lancet's 1997 study if you think the Weekly Standard is a right wing rag.

Then consider HHH's Liberal mantra

...those vulnerable at the end of life, those vulnerable at the beginning...

Jill's on HHH's Liberal side... where the rest of the Liberals have gone...when they're marching with the Smash the Jewish State; No War on Iran crowd is as sad thing...

Like I said, I haven't been on a campus in ages.... Most of what know is the appalling stuff going on at DePaul where the Conservative stusdents where set up with the graffeti.

Skeeter 1:51 PM

First, you are right. I am not a liberal. I am a moderate/progressive.

With regard to Stanek: Get real, Bill.

Stanek could not care less about a child once it takes its first breath.

She is consistently against any sort of public funding for matters like health care and education. She is for the death penalty.

She doesn't care about life at all. She is just a religious fanatic who should not be taken seriously by anybody. She IS the American Taliban. I am not soliciting hits on my blog, but take a look at what her friends have been up to in Missouri. They care about their version of the Bible. They don't care about vulernable people.

Bill Baar 1:56 PM

I can tell your no liberal skeeter... you broadcast it loud and clear.

Skeeter 3:02 PM

And you are not a right wing extremist.

You just have some friends who are.

Bill Baar 5:56 PM

Skeeter... when Miller get's around to the Illionize blogger party, you better show so I can buy you a beer... never let politics blog friendship... or at least being cordial.... first one is on me.
b
PS and you better have the last word here so I don't take flake for that.

Skeeter 2:29 PM

Sorry, can't make it. I have no problems drinking with the enemy, but your "pro-life" friends scare the hell out of me.

It is an interesting world where the gun nuts are probably harmless but the pro-life people are the dangerous ones.
