Environment On the Ballot in Cook County

For the first time ever, a political process famous for paying off for precinct captains and patronage workers might actually make winners out of our forest preserves, Lake Michigan, our Chicago River system, and all of us who want to see them kept clean.

On the campaign circuit, at bingo games and pancake breakfasts, candidates talked about wetlands and water quality, and heads nodded in agreement. After years of bad news out of Washington on environmental policy, candidates who stress strong support for clean air and clean water are finding receptive audiences in Illinois. The people want progress, and are refreshed to hear from candidates who want to keep moving forward.

Forrest Claypool and Debra Shore have made environmental issues central to their campaigns. Sierra Club is working overtime to ensure that Tuesday’s results send a clear message that being right on the environment leads to victory at the polls in Chicago and Cook County.

Especially in such a low-turnout election, the environmental vote could be decisive. Sierra Club has had a full-time organizer identifying and mobilizing pro-environment voters for Claypool and Shore since mid-February. In a campaign season marked by apathy, Sierra Club volunteers who have seen our forest preserves suffer from poor management, and who want cleaner water in the Chicago River, have been making calls, walking precincts, and mailing their friends with their recommendations. 30-40 Sierra Club volunteers will be on the job Tuesday around Cook County bringing out the green vote. All in all, our campaign is by far the biggest environmental voter mobilization yet in a Cook County election.

Make sure all the black voters know that Debra Shore is with Claypool and she has no history in the black community. Another liberaly hypocrite.

Watch out for the Sierra Club, ask the Carpenters union about them, and the Plumbers, the Sierra Club is racist anti-immigrant, anti-union, anti-economic growth, and ANTI-JOBS. Unemployment is already too high you can't have the Sierra Club and rich North Shore open lesbian Debra Shore and playboy rich Forest Claypool kill your jobs so they can feed their egos and watch birds fly around or boat around the river acting like they are contributing to something.

Minorities whining about entitlements again. Boo hoo, so and so doesn't "do" anything for the blacks. Get off your lazy ass and earn a job, earn a paycheck, and earn some respect. Boo hoo hoo.

Don't worry, I will personally make sure ALL black voters know what you say. You can stay home.

I didn't realize the MWRD was so tainted with race issues, I thought it was about boring stuff like water and sewage. I can't wait to see the racial invective when seats are up on the Mosquito Abatement District.

The bashing by union supporters of the Sierra Club is one of the reasons why union membership is going down the tubes and the public has very little sympathy for unions.

Rather than building an alliance with other progressive groups, the unions want their way each and every time. When they don't get it they attack others such as environmental groups. Then, when the unions come under fire from Republicans or big business they wonder why nobody bothers to lift up a hand to help them.

I am a union member and used to support unions, but with comments and views like on this thread, I won't shed a tear when they go under.

Wow. Anon 11:54, Anon 11:58, and Anon 12:00... the anonymous political hack job trifecta.

Since when does giving a fig about a healthy environment and clean water mean you're a racist???? And what's with throwing Deb's sexuality into this? John Stroger is openly heterosexual -- who cares?

What a load of crap you anonymous piece of #$%@#*&. It's morons like you that hold America back.

Not that your comments deserve a response, but I'll use it as an opportunity to mention that our volunteer and mail program has also been helping David Miller in the south suburbs and Martin Sandoval on the west side. I would think it goes without saying that our endorsements are color-blind. And in terms of labor, we're working alongside our union friends in many of these races.

You'd think the Stroger campaign would have had better things to do on Monday than race-bait this post, but I guess not. They must have been warming up the race-baiting machinery for Tuesday night and Wednesday.
