Legislative Pipeline

A few interesting pieces of legislation in the pipeline already:

HB 2548 (Flowers) - Raises nursing standards for Illinois hospitals....lower staffing levels have been linked to higher mortality rates.

HB 4142 (Davis) - Bans the sale, manufacture and use of stun guns, even by law enforcement....stun guns have been the cause of high profile deaths, raising questions about the meaning of the phrase "non-lethal force".

HB 4146 (Reis) - Bans state funding of stem cell research, by calling it "human cloning"....what would session be without another high-profile grenade lobbed from the only district that Alan Keyes won?

HB 4357 (Lindner) - Yet another attempt at grandparents' visitations rights, which has been struck down by the courts before. How come whenever conservatives bring up the "Nanny State", they ignore GOP efforts to tell parents who can influence their children? I empathize with grandparents who have been cut out of the picture -- but maybe they should have been just a teensy bit nicer to their son-in-law while their daughter was still alive.

As to the first bill, good for Mary Flowers (and Shane Cultra). I'd like to see them extend it to include nursing homes, if possible. That's where the real trouble is.

A little cold on HB4357.

Re: HB 2548... this one is tougher than Californias. How did they come up with the ratio? It will be a Nursing shortage sooner rather than later so not sure what good this one will do and it may will do harm.

"Bans the sale, manufacture and use of stun guns, even by law enforcement....stun guns have been the cause of high profile deaths, raising questions about the meaning of the phrase "non-lethal force"."
- Yeah, going back to guns will be much less lethal. Why not just make more strict guidelines as to when stun guns can be used by law enforcement? That would resolve most of the problem of injury from misuse, duh. Apparently, Democrats aren't just soft on fighting crime, but stupid on it as well.

Anon, crack on Dems aside, I was on the same wave there. Sure, there is potential for abuse -- but if you offer me the choice - and "neither" isn't an option - of taser/stun gun or bullet. I promise you I'm taking my chances with the volts.

Mary Flowers is a great Representative and this thoughtful legislation will help improve the quality of health care in Illinois.

ah yes...David Reis and the unChristian right are at it again. Hello? Dave? Nancy Reagan AND Orrin Hatch support stem cell research. How far out of the mainstream can you get? Dave? Anybody home?
