John T. Kelly Campaign Signs Forrest The 3rd Congressional District
Even though John T. Kelly was assailed by the Chicago news media early on in his campaign to oust Rep. Dan Lipinski in the March Democratic Primary, there is a verdant forrest of Kelly-green signs marking the 3rd District landscape.
Kelly of Oak Lawn, is a boxer who knows how to counter-punch. When charged by pundits with being a political 'plant' and part of a dirty tricks campaign to save the seat (literally and figuratively) of Dan Lipinski - the long-drink of water college prof occupying the office held with so much influence, honor, and distinction by his father William Lipinski, Kelly squared his stance and put up his guns.
Kelly blocked the soggy jabs from the mavens with salty good-humor and tough assurance. Carol Marin, the Chicago news icon, opined that Kelly's name and Irish heritage were employed to confuse voters like me, who live in the 3rd district:
Is John T. Kelly a "ringer''?
Absolutely not, Kelly told me Thursday. What about the charge that some Lipinski loyalists were circulating his petitions? "First of all," said Kelly, that charge "kind of irritates me."
Well, then, what about this: Two years ago, weren't you running in the Republican primary but bailed out, leaving the "ringer" Chlada there to guarantee Dan Lipinski's victory?
Kelly said he quit the race in 2004 because of family reasons. "I had to drop out," he told me. "What pissed me off, had I stayed, I would have blown Ryan Chlada away."
But he didn't stay. And now that he's back, Kelly, a 35-year-old financial planner, is running as a Democrat, which he says he really is. He only ran as a Republican in 2004, he contends, because he thought it would give him a clearer shot.
Well, then, you have to wonder why he wouldn't enlist the same strategy this time around. His Republican opposition now would be two goofy perennial losers, Ray "Spanky the Clown" Wardingley and Art "The Neo-Nazi" Jones.

By the way Carol, Boxers do not look forward to fight 'cans of tomatoes.' Kelly is in it for the fight with a tough opponent. The Lipinski Organization does not shadow box.
The guy who is supposed to be the 'threat' Cook County States Attorney John Sullivan, a nice enough man, goes to work every day seeing an endless parade of Green and White John T. Kelly campaign signs sprouting from the lawns of his neighbors. The poor guy can't go to Dominck's, Kean, County Fair, Jewel ( 2 on 103rd Street alone), Jiffy Lube, Keegan's Pub, Louie's Chop House in Oak Lawn, or the new Branding Iron on Southwest Highway, or take in the beauties of the Cook County Forest Preserves without seeing the impact of John T. Kelly's Campaign.

Dan Lipinski's Dad made a hell of a lot of friends in the 3rd District; John T. Kelly has made quite a few as well. That is some green forrest.

I can't believe all the Kelly signs on the Southside. I hope at least Lipper knows the people on the Southwest side are not going to stand for his Daddy helping him.
I have seen Kelly signs every where who is this guy.
Hickey I don't always agree with you. but on this one you're right on. My wife and four kids will be voting for Kelly. I'm sick of the Lipinski's.

All around the city I see more Avila signs than anything else.
Now a lot of Dart signs and North a lot of Claypool.
Rich Remus has more signs than anyone. That is a real half Irish 19th ward tough guy not the pansy wannabees.
Frank Avila has great number of signs in Oak Kawn and Alsip; I attended a meet-and-greet for Forrest Claypool in Oak Lawn and the house was full. i missed Claypool as I baby-sitting duties for my kid and the more affluent families in the 19th Ward.

Rich remus might have alot of signs but he must be keeping them in his garage. there is a HUGE sign at 107th and Claremont and sprinkling here and there: my neighbor, two doors down, has two, But still Tom Dart seems to dominate.
Yes, Rich Remus ( 'my Kraut/Mick friend' The GodFather Part I) is a great guy with many friends and tougher than times in '29!
Rich Remus is tougher than Tom Hagen. He is half German and half Irish. But he is tougher than Luka Brasi. Most of the Avila signs are only in the Hispanic areas and the northwest side. Don't see a lot south.
Although I wouldn't mess with Kelly either.
I want to see a cage match with Kelly and Remus. Remus and Kelly are the toughest. Tom Dart does seem like a pansy. Hickey talks tough but I want to see the guy.
