Chicago immigration forum at church goes out of control

Racist Minutemen go to Hell!

Chant from anti-Minute Men protesters last night, courtesy, along with the photo, of Freedom Folks.

Yesterday evening there was supposed to have been an immigration forum at the Fourth Congregational Church in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. The church's pastor, the Rev. Dan Wood, invited the Illinois Minutemen and Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

There was no debate. Why? Because the latter group backed out.

From their web site:

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is withdrawing from a debate with the Illinois Minutemen on the immigration issue at Fourth Congregational Church in Logan Square tonight (Thursday, May 4, 2006).

It is clear to us from the e-mail notices of white racist organizations that this event has the potential to turn into a violent street confrontation. Our organization has no interest whatsoever in contributing to an event in which people could be hurt; that allows extremists to vent their hatred; or that further exacerbates tensions at a time when our nation is interested in solutions.

The event, such as it was, lasted ten minutes. Immigration reform activists, or what Jake calls the "Anti-Minutemen," were shouting and screaming as Rosanna Pulido of the Illinois Minutemen attempted to address the crowd. She didn't succeed. Keep in mind Rosanna, I nice woman who I've met, was speaking in a church.

More from Freedom Folks:

After several minutes of the anti-minuteman mode of conduct, immigration activist, Niurus Ramos, took the microphone and attempted, by yelling at the top of her voice, to be heard by crowd. She was making an effort to tell them to stop what they were doing and participate productively in what was left of the so-called Forum/Debate. She was not the least bit successful in her endeavors to calm her group down or to restore any semblance of order to the out-of-control situation.

The behavior of the Anti-Minuteman people (if that is what I am to call them, maybe some of the are members of The Anti-Minutemen Five organization) was shocking. The look in their eyes was one of pure hatred as they carried on and on and on.

NBC 5 Chicago did a so-so job covering the story. Unlike CBS 2 Chicago, Channel 5 didn't mention that the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights cancelled the day before the debate.

I was able, however, to glean these nuggets from the NBC 5 story:

Immigration activists said there should have been a debate with the Minutemen.

(My note, uh...are you dense? The other group bailed.)

"They should have waited and debated with them," said immigration activist Niuris Ramos. "But you know, Logan Square and Humboldt Park is a community that will fight for what they believe in, and this is what you see. This is fight." The argument continued outside the forum, Elgas reported.

"It was not the Minutemen causing this, it was these other groups," Wood (the church's pastor) said. "However, remember there's an extreme element on both sides."

Knowing Jake and MJ (and I do), look for more posts from them on the Logan Square "debate."

Oh, Logan Square trivia time! Jake and MJ live in Logan Square. With no disrepect to them, the most famous person from that neighborhood is Jose "The Dirty Bomber" Padilla.

The Minutemen are idiots who hurt their own cause, but when someone calls them Nazis, they are only making themselves look stupid.

I agree that this group should not be compared to Nazis. However, it has been reported that members of the Minutemen were hoisting the confederate flag in Southern Arizona. That sort of behavior won’t win many converts, nor help find a balanced approach to the issue.

Look into links between Luis Gutierrez and Jose Padilla.

On a related illegal immigration note: Interesting Pam Zekman story last night about how the photography studio owned by the family of Alderman Ricky Munoz is in the fake ID business. It was the same story Walter Jacobson did five years ago about the alderman. At that time Ricky said he's "see to it" that the family got out of the fake ID business. Ricky lied again. Another Chicago "reformer" exposed.

Skeeter 12:44 PM

What possible relevance to anything was there in the Padilla comment?

First Ruberry says that all Jews are out to screw everybody over. Then he says that the most famous resident of an Hispanic neighborhood is a suspected terrorist.

The evidence sure keeps pointing to one thing: I bet Ruberry can tell us where to get some nice white pointy hats.

Bill Baar 4:44 PM

Skeeter, where are you seeing Ruberry said Jews are out to screw everybody over?

Jose Padilla is an American Hero.

Marathon Pundit 9:31 PM

Man oh man, skeeter, you don't get it.

The Padilla reference was made as a good natured joke for Jake of Freedom Folks, who lives in Logan Square.

To quote Gene Wilder in "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory:"

We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams.

In other words, I put that in there because I felt like it.

First Ruberry says that all Jews are out to screw everybody over.

That's a libelous statement, skeeter. Bill's right, I never even alluded to it, let alone said it.

Funny, I was at a synogogue at this time last Saturday...

Back to Padilla. I hate to say it, he's the most famous living person from that neighborhood.

Knute Rockne was the most famous Logan Square-ite of them all.

Rubbery [and Baar0
You seem to have forgotten the Creamer thread already.
Remember the comments there?
Remember your response, Rube?
Bet honest. You approved of the comments saying that Creamer.
Have you forgotten?

Marathon Pundit 4:46 PM

Hello Skeeter...

http://marathonpundit.blogspot.com

May 7.

And it was inevetible that some of these people pushed back...
Ray Bradbury, The Martian Chronichles, 1950.

I occasionally contribute to Rich Miller's Illinoize blog. I posted my Chicago Minutemen story on that blog last week.

And for some reason, an anonymous blogger called Skeeter views that post as an opportunity to libel me as an anti-semite.

In his words:

First Ruberry says that all Jews are out to screw everybody over. Then he says that the most famous resident of an Hispanic neighborhood is a suspected terrorist.

(My note, that suspected terrorist is Jose Padilla.)

The evidence sure keeps pointing to one thing: I bet Ruberry can tell us where to get some nice white pointy hats.

The first couple of swipes I got from "Skeeter," I felt it best to leave it out of this blog.

But to ignore repeated slurs is not in my nature.

Skeeter 6:39 PM

John,
What about the comments about the Creamer piece?

Did people there claim that Jews were out to screw over non-Jews?

Did you agree, at least as far as Mr. Creamer?

I called you on it then, and I call you on it today.

Also, please explain the Padilla reference.

You made the comments. I didn't. I just added the appropriate label.

Don't want to be called racist? Don't act like a racist.

Marathon Pundit 7:05 PM

I did already on Padilla.

I request, no make that, I demand you retract those comments.

Skeeter 7:43 PM

No, you didn't explain.

On a post about immigration, you made a cheap shot at a neighborhood. Were you just rambling, or was there a point. What does a suspected terrorist have to do with the immigration issue? Perhaps you are just a terrible writer who cannot piece together coherent thoughts. I haven't ruled that out. Or maybe you are trying to suggest that these brown-skin folks just might be terrorist. I haven't ruled that out either.

With regard to Jews:
You have yet to address the Creamer notes. I called you on it then, and you agreed with the poster that Creamer and his wife are Jews are to help other Jews and to screw over everybody else. I called you on it then, and you agreed with the poster.

I will accept an apology for those comments now.

i think i see the connection:

- logan square is one of those incestuous enclaves of white, middleclass hipsters.

- hipsters understand that the best way to affect intellect is to repeat whatever wide-eyed progressive street barkers tell them.

- the klan-like mob who used physical intimidation to shut down discourse in logan square last week was composed exclusively of progressives.

- progressives support "anti-imperialist" war against the u.s. and her allies.

- jose padilla was arrested as an agent of "anti-imperialist" war against the u.s..

Anonymous,  11:49 PM

what by the way did anything regarding the war have to do with immigration? the anti-speech mob had a couple of signs about the war on thursday.

Bill Baar 6:41 AM

I was getting a hair cut in Elgin Saturaday and was surprized to see four people from Workers World Party with a huge red flag walking down the street.

A photographer was taking a picture of the barber shop... I asked him what was going on and he said they're had been a cinco de mayo rally (funny cause it was the sixth) and these four had shown up... he was upset about them.

Anyways, he was taking pictures of the ralley and then stopped to take some pics for local color.

The point of the four comrades was how the hard left is trying to hijack some of these demos.

Skeeter, I'm always on the lookout for anti semitism because I think there's a resurgence of it... I've never seen anything for the sorts uttered by Marathon...

You've compared me to the guy who bombed the OK Fed Bldg, so I wish you'd be a little circumscript with the attacks.... mostly because they derail the threads.

Skeeter 7:29 AM

Bill,

With regard to the Fed Ct. attacks:
I said your comments play to those who would do that.

What kind of comments did we later see? People calling Federal Judges roaches and rats, which is exactly the sort of response that I predicted. I note that, like Ruberry, you failed to condemn those statements. It is your forum. If people post offensive matters and claim to agree with you, and you do not comment, people will draw conclusions.

Bill, did you ever criticize those calling our Federal Judges "roaches"?

I also noted in the comments that I did not intend to accuse you of being McVeigh, and I apologized if the comments were read that way. It is a small step from comments by you and others claiming that the judge was corrupt, to the statements in the comments calling the judges roaches. I do not believe in personal attacks on judges. Criticize the law, not the judge.

Also, you also have not provided any explanation for why Rubbery would include the Padilla comment.

Anonymous,  10:07 AM

...also, DePaul Sucks!!!!!

Marathon Pundit 1:32 PM

Skeeter, you're ruining this site.

Because of you, future Illinoize posts by me will allow comments only on Marathon Pundit. Haloscan (the comment system I use) is easier for me to keep an eye on, and it allows me to ban-for-life, disruptive and libelous individuals such as yourself.

There's a good thing going on this site, and right now, it's on the precipice.

It's easier to destroy, than to create.

Skeeter 3:42 PM

Rube,

Destroying the site for people who want to use it to claim that Padilla is the representative of Chicago Latinos? If by calling you on the fact that you made an outrageous statement is "destroying", then so be it.

Further, you didn't answer the questions.

On your Creamer piece, did you or did you not agree with the commenter who said that Jews were just out to protect Jews? In fact, didn't I call you on that then, and didn't you agree with the commenter, at least as far as it pertains to Creamer?

Further, I am still waiting for any sort of explanation for the Padilla reference. Your piece dropped his name for no apparent reason. Was it just incoherent rambling on your part? Is that your defense?

Do you have a defense?

I didn't make the comments. You did. I just pointed out what was obvious to everybody.

Don't blame me for your former comments. You want to make offensive comments and then be above criticism.

Interestig. The above comment did not upset Ruberry. He saw no need to comment on it.

You might want to explain that Rube.

Why the outrage over my Padilla question, but not the above Padilla question, which of course suggests that Cong. Gutierrez may have links to terrorism.

What conclusion should I draw from the fact that you chose to respond to my post but not to the one above?
