Illinois officials to square off on the Daily Show

Tonight Governor Blagojevich and State Rep Ron Stephens will be featured in a segment on Jon Stewart's the Daily Show on Comedy Central. The show which was taped in December and airs at 10 p.m. will have the two Illinois officials squaring off on emergency contraception. Many pharmacists, like Stephens, have been unhappy with the governor's order forcing them to fill prescriptions for the morning after pill and many have refused. It should be interesting to see how Jason Jones, the show's correspondent makes this funny.

I don't watch the show much. I wish they weren't appearing though and especially to talk about this topic.

How to make this funny? Try looking at the Governor's record and broken promises.

I used to watch the Daily Show, well, daily. Then I graduated college.

The problem with comics like Stewart (Carlin and Maher fall into this category as well) is that they want to have it both ways. They want their opinions be taken seriously, but they also want to hide behind “we’re just a comedy show” whenever their use of comedic license threatens to expose them as hypocritical, disingenuous, or – most importantly – just plain-old, factually wrong.

As opposed to Fox, Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Newsmax et al, who just talk louder when it's pointed out how often they are "hypocritical, disingenuous, or – most importantly – just plain-old, factually wrong." Of course they actually present themselves as entities to be taken seriously, which is why the average Fox viewer still thinks they found WMD's in Iraq.

I will bet anyone the average Daily Show viewer is better informed than the average Fox viewer. That's the problem GOP, you obviously got dumber when you left college.

For the record Anon, I can't stand FOX news, and I only listen to Rush for the comedic value of his arrogance.

I stopped watching the Daily Show when I left college because I became interested in learning all the facts about a news story....not just the facts that help set up the punchline. That's why I read the Wall Street Journal, listen to NPR and watch C-SPAN.

If you want to make the case that I am "dumb," you'll need more than stereotypical, uninformed assumptions about my media consumption habits.

The problem is that, while people know the Daily Show is an entertainment show, some people think Rush and Hannity are giving serious news rather than entertainment.

Anon 10:36, you are right, some people who listen to Rush and Hannity don't understand that it is highly editorialized and one-sided news, at best – and those people aren’t the most informed. But there are also some people who watch the Daily Show who don't understand that in order to make some of their jokes work, they have to bend or spin the truth.

My original comment was actually more about Stewart himself, who got visibly offended and angry on Crossfire last year when Tucker Carlson tried to blow off his sanctimonious speechmaking by dismissing him as a punch-line seeking comic yet hides behind that characterization whenever he asks guests on his show a question that might be unexpected or inappropriate for what is supposed to be an “entertainment” show.

But my orginal comment was actually much more about Stewart himself, who

Daily Show is fake journalism at a time when real journalist get killed covering stories.

That's my problem. Not a big issue... but I don't think it's a right left or liberal conservative thing.

I'd prefer pols stay off it when talking serious issues.

I wasn't thrilled to see the Pols on Jay or that other guy either....

...I'm getting crusty in old age.

Tell you the truth... I find it best to read transcripts.

Apparently the post dispatch is mistaken.

Rescheduled for Thursday according to today's paper. I looked back at the Post more than once last night to make sure I had read the story correctly.

Yeh....I stayed up past my bedtime and no Rod n' Ron show!!!

I thought the Rod n' Ron show was pretty good. Of course it's satire, but it's also showing what douchebags these Christian fundamentalists can be by trying to control a woman's body. I liked it and thought Blagojevich interviewed pretty well.
