CHICAGO TRIBUNE
-- 78-PAGE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT (PDF FILE): UNITED STATES OF AMERICA V. ROD R. BLAGOJEVICH AND JOHN HARRIS
http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/acrobat/2008-12/43789434.pdf
-- Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested today by FBI agents on federal corruption charges. More details to come.

(THE REPORT: A source said today that Gov. Rod Blagojevich was taken into federal custody at his North Side home this morning. The U.S. attorney's office would not confirm the information. A Blagojevich spokesman said he was unaware of the development. "Haven't heard anything -- you are first to call," Lucio Guerrero said in an e-mail. U.S. attorney's office spokesman Randall Samborn said both Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested today. Authorities aren't yet releasing details about those charges. The stunning, early morning visit by authorities to the governor's North Side home came amid revelations that federal investigators had recorded the governor with the cooperation of a longtime confidant and had begun to focus on the possibility that the process of choosing a Senate successor to President-elect Barack Obama could be tainted by pay-to-play politics. Blagojevich was taken into custody hours after the Tribune reported that the investigation into allegations of pay-to-play politics within his administration had been expanded to include his pending choice of a Senate replacement for Obama. The Democratic governor has said he expects to make a decision on the state's next senator in weeks. Sources told the Tribune that investigators intensified their investigation into Blagojevich amid concerns that the process of choosing a new senator could be tainted. The actions by federal authorities came a day before Blagojevich's 52nd birthday. The Tribune previously disclosed that federal investigators had recordings of Blagojevich. Those recordings were aided by the cooperation of longtime Blagojevich confidant and former congressional chief of staff John Wyma. On Monday, Blagojevich said he has done nothing wrong in his stewardship of the state and challenged critics to record him because his discussions were "always lawful.")

Their possible candidates for the 2010 Senate possible include Congressmen Mark Kirk and Peter Roskam, as well as Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Let them sink. They sealed their fate by prying open the Ryan family's child custody case in 2004. The only way they could survive now would be to make columnist John Kass the man-in-charge and assign every reporter and columnist to follow Kass' courageous lead and turn this city's slimy and corrupt boulders over, shine the light on the scattering political cockroaches beneath. The only thing is along the way, the Trib bought a friend who's moving into the White House. (THE ARTICLE: Levin memo asks defense to woo Big 3 - Jen Dimascio One of the many arguments to save the failing Big Three automakers goes to the heart of the nation’s security. Leading the charge is Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. His press aides have circulated a memo to illustrate a connection that isn’t immediately apparent -- even to the defense industry. The nation may be at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but Ford, General Motors and Chrysler haven’t been pressed into service the way they were during World War II. Defense giants General Dynamics, BAE Systems and AM General are churning out much of the Army’s equipment: Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Humvees. But that’s not happening in Detroit, a fact not lost on Congress. Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, has argued the government could commandeer the auto companies to help quickly manufacture Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles. The link between the auto and defense industries, Levin’s memo points out, lies in the automakers’ vast supplier base. A number of companies that aren’t household names, such as Arvin Meritor and Detroit Diesel, can’t keep supplying the military with axles and engines if they don’t have enough work from the automakers. And the military already struggles to find suppliers for the many components needed for its ground vehicles. If suppliers disappear along with Detroit’s auto companies, the cost of replacement parts could skyrocket, Levin’s memo warns. An ailing auto industry could also hurt commercial-military efforts to do high-tech research and train new engineers. Much of that work is conducted at the Army’s Tank Automotive Armaments Command and a related research center in Warren, Mich. “Without a strong domestic auto industry, less innovation would occur and we could lose our technological edge to foreign countries, thereby missing out on the next generation of automotive technologies,” the memo said. As a whole, the defense industry isn’t yet threatened enough to lobby loudly on the auto industry’s plight, said Peter Steffes, a spokesman for the National Defense Industrial Association. And that’s despite the fact that American automotive companies do supply a large number of support vehicles to the Pentagon every year. “Not everyone rides in a Humvee or an MRAP,” he said.)

How do we deal with the ghastly ghosts of our past?. . .These ghosts are constantly reminding us of how earthly and human this fragile experiment in democracy has been. And his election, for African American communities in particular, and for the nation in general, is a signal that the true work begins January 20.'')
