19th Ward Campaign Kickoff Parties
The Aldermanic candidates for the 19th ward in the City of Chicago are gearing up for the battles to come. Here are their upcoming events and where they will meet the neighbors and pony up the dollars for their campaigns. By far the candidate with the most foot work as far as events go is Timothy Sheehan. His campaign has already hosted an open house, a Halloween bash, and several meet the candidate events.
Alderman Ginger Rugai is seeking her fifth term and faces an energetic challenge from Timothy Sheehan, but so far barely a squeak from last time loser John Somerville. This will be a contest to watch

That picture almost makes me thing Beverly is the wild west and I know it just isn't. Made me laugh.
True, Levois my friend, true - there is a metaphorical level of antipathy that boils up with some of the more passionate or loopy partisans.
That's Pat in the floppy hat. It sure sounds like your going with Tim. Are you part of the plan,Pat?
Hey, Bill, what up, Buttercup? No, I really like Tim Sheehan alot but I will probably vote for Ginger as I have known her much longer and I also like what she has done in the Ward as part of a pretty effective team. Tim Sheehan, by dint of his honesty and energy, will make a fine Alderman, but I don't know if I would give up on Ginger. She really gets a bad rap from some pretty goofy people, but there are some very smart and nice people that Ginger does not seem to be able to maintain in her camp. Hey, that is the American way.
I really warmed up to Ginger when me and the kids moved into the neighborhood nine years ago and witnessed her working over of the crumbs at Peoples Gas - busy shutting off poor peoples gas; jerking around the people who actually provide the service -their employees - and especially making dumb-as-dirt Desiree Rogers try to explain a series of explosions in Mount Greenwood.
John Somerville is incredibly handsome, but just not my type. He oozes the sincerity of a Wayne Newton and thoughtfulness of a Kevin Federline all at once.
Kevin Federline?
Desiree Rogers is an overrated political idiot
The 19th ward is not as tough as the 12th ward where one candidate Carina Sanchez got fired merely for having the audacity to run for office.
Although, 4 years ago the 19th ward played a role in the 12th ward through powerful power brokers, the media and other deals.
Hopefully, that will not happen again.
Pat Hickey, it sounds like you've already been bought and sold. Change is coming to the 19th Ward, in spite of your smug wit to the contrary.
Signed,
Mount Greenwood Resident who thinks 16 years has already been far too long
Hey Mt. Greenwood Resident,
Notice all the Tim Sheehan signs in your neighborhood? That is a pretty effective sign of support for a great guy; however, your tone and manner strikes me as traits of a Somervillain. Sheehan's campaign takes the high road.
Change is good - tens and twenties are better.
Somervillain math:
Take the votes in potential and subtract more by allienating more people with shrill charges of BOUGHT AND SOLD! BOUGHT AND SOLD! Sounding like Gomer's Citizens Arr-Rayest!
It will be close between Tim Sheehan and Ginger Rugai and Handsome John won't get 15%. The Times They are a Changing, but the outcome will be the one John Somerville deserves (Loser X 2 - real math) - and his self-marginalized boosters.
Specifics Pat, Specifics, not just witty insults and poetry.
What is wrong with John Sommerville
(or good with Sheehan and Rugai)?
Ginger Rugai is a good Alderman and there are a good numberof people in the 19th Ward who have issues with some of her development, crime, and infrastructure decisions. In the last campaign John Somerville used some of that anger or frustration and polled some decent numbers.
Tim Sheehan is a local real estate developer and would make an excellent Alderman - The Somerville camp screams to all and sundry that Tim Sheehan is a plant of the powers that be.
That, in a nutshell, -and Somerville has some pretty nutty followers - is the problem with John Somerville -the Man Who Would Be King. He wants so badly to be the Power that he employs all manner of slander and personal attack on people who do not burn incense at his altar - Jesus, John, you are not Oprah; but then who is?
Here is my take on it - In the last election cycle there was a great deal of hostility about tribal matters in the Ward - who gets what permit, how projects get pushed forward & etc. real life issues. Somerville took a stab at it and lost. But that was not good enough -
1. When a great candidate to challenge Dan Lipinski jumped in the 3rd district Race, John Kelly, Somerville acted as baby-kingmaker and backed a guy from his office, nice man, to run with the support of confrontational political operatives from WAAAYYYY outside of the Ward - The Ken Kesey Merry Prankster variety of losers. They tagged John Kelly as a plant. Somerville's guy ran third.
2. Somerville employs one of the goofiest and slanderous websites run by some guy who is so seriously disappointed about everything that he encourages the most scurrilous and laughable attacks on people not even remotely involved in 19th ward Organization.
You really should take a look at this goofy site - I quit responding to slanders against some very nice people because it really is a cesspoll. http://www.19thwardagenda.com/
2. I witnessed John Somerville's attempt to use a CAPS meeting after the Ryan Rusch attack in Beverly Park last summer as a political vantage point and pretty much got laughed out of the place. The State's Attorney handling the case even gave him a verbal snap on the nose. 'This is not the time or place, John . . .'
3. Close on the heels of that event when the community was organized for Police District 22's Night Out Against Crime John 'brought the community together' by having his own 'John's Night Out' at Beverly Park attended by tens of people from Oak Lawn. Do you see a logical pattern here.
4. The guy will do anything and say anything and support anything to get power - power? Jesus, what a thankless job being a Good Alderman is - ask Tom Murphy (18th ward) who recently retired from office. Of course John would not be a good Alderman as he seems to self-absorbed to do a good job. But Hey - I am only one voter - oh, and my daughter -that's two votes - she don't like the guy either and we never agree anything.
5. There are some wonderful people backing John Somerville my neighbor has a huge sign on his front lawn. That, one would think, should be good enough - build off of friends and attract votes through great people. Somerville and his people slander the Beverly Area Planning Association and any person who works there - here's a good one - John Somerville is on the BAPA Council of Delegates BUT HE MAKES NO FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO BAPA -, Police District 22, The Beverly Review ( a community paper owned by Toby Olshefsi of Bourbaonnais,IL), The Christmas Basket Program, and any one else they choose to target as enemies.
Tim Sheehan or Ginger Rugai will do a great job. John Somerville is doing very well where he belongs - with the self-marginalized and unhappy. Come February he will be a two time loser. I do not believe that he will get 15% of the vote.
It will be a squeaker between Ginger and Tim.
Pat I dont understand your hostility for John but then again I dont know him. I do believe ginger is doing a poor job. Crime is up in the 19th ward and development has been at a stand still for the last 3 years now come election time things start to get moving. Ginger ignores a large base of her supporters city workers every 4 years when there contracts expire and there forced to wait 18 months to two years for new contracts (she is co chair of the police fire committe but says and does nothing). The only police and fireman that support her are the ones that she clouted into there promotions and spots. Hope the feds look into that scam. Ginger has become a do nothing alderman that is Daleys lap dog. As for sheehan being a plant he was donatining to gingers campaign very recently and handles her sons buisness. I dont know sommerville but I have meet ginger she is an obstacle to improving the ward not a leader. I believe sheehan is plan B for the 19th ward wizard of oz Joyce he is aware that ginger is unpopular so he got sheehan to run. he can be the spoiler keeping sommerville out or he just might win it. but I dont know if hes his own man
I have no hostility toward John Somerville. He is not the guy to 'bring the community together' and all of his past actions seem to attest to that.
Tim Sheehan stikes me as a very honest and talented man and he would make a very good Alderman.
If folks don't care to vote for Ginger Rugai that is their business and the right. However, there are too many goofs howling 'foul play' & 'The fix is in' and 'Pat Fitzgerald's my cousin so the indictments are coming' and you'd think that the 19th Ward was the Gulag, for Christ's sake.
Some people can never remember a favor; some people are bitter and disappointed for many reasons;some people can never forgive a kindness done for them; some people believe that they 'have all the answers' and John Somerville has WAY too many folks like that in his campaign - I'll take a pass on Somerville style sincerity.
You sound like you have thought through Ginger's record and have found her lacking the ability to keep your vote; that is Ginger's problem. You sound like a pretty solid person. Vote and we will see.
