Only 41 days until the election!

ILLINOIS REVIEW
-- DuPage County GOPers hoist McCain and VP pick Palin - Fran Eaton (DIERSEN: When will the Daily Herald, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, etc. publish their reports on the event?)

(THE REPORT: WEST CHICAGO -- Over 1000 Sarah Palin lipsticks, 1000 McCain/Palin yard signs and 1000 containers of Oberweis ice cream were distributed Monday night at DuPage Co GOP's annual rally. Those attending were notably enthused about John McCain's pick for VP, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. RNC Committeeman Pat Brady said when he returned from the Republican National Convention, he had 450 emails asking how they could help with the McCain/Palin campaign. Brady said the IL GOP was working to get McCain and Palin to Illinois, but admitted it would be a tough task. "Illinois isn't too high on the priority list, but things could change quickly. We're going to keep trying," he said. "There's no doubt, Palin energized the base in Illinois." State Rep. Jim Durkin said he was headed to Springfield for Tuesday's session, and was the only state lawmaker at the DuPage event, as the others were at the Capitol. Durkin addressed the crowd as chairman of Illinois' McCain campaign saying at the Republican National Convention, ". . .we watched the emergence of one of the greatest political stars to come on the horizon in Governor Sarah Palin. . . ." Republican candidate to replace retiring State Rep. Jim Meyers Lisle's Mike Connelly said he, too, is encouraged about the renewed enthusiasm among Republicans since the convention. "We're not taking anything for granted, but things look good for my race," Connelly said. "I'm not sure it came across the air waves the electricity there was in the auditorium the night Sarah Palin spoke," IL GOP's Exec Director Jason Heffley said. "It was something I'd never seen before. People of all ages were caught up in the atmosphere." Below the fold are some clips from the night's rally speeches, including Joe Birkett, Dr. Steve Sauerberg, Congressman Peter Roskam's wife Elizabeth, 14th CD candidate Jim Oberweis and State Rep. Jim Durkin.)

-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: VERY SAD: The Chicago Tribune is making it increasing clear that it exists to elect Democrats and especially to elect Obama. Outrageously, the Chicago Tribune constructively argues that all Whites are racists and that older Whites are the most racist. Generally, as people get older and wiser, they become more conservative as they come to better understand the folly of liberalism. Beyond outrageously, the Chicago Tribune and other members of the Combine have always equated conservatism with racism.

ASSOCIATED PRESS
-- Parsing the political present tense - Christopher Wills
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hQ7k_21k9Ctk8kh8fTX9ullyNgggD93CGPGO0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans acknowledge voting "present" is not necessarily a sign that someone is avoiding a tough decision. But some argue that the option can be abused. "It's a rarity. You might do it a couple of times a session, maybe five times," Republican state Sen. Larry Bomke said. Bomke voted "present" 20 times, compared to six for Obama, in the spring 2003 session when Republicans were in the minority. Two years earlier, when Republicans held the majority, Bomke cast 12 "present" votes, to 23 for Obama. Sen. Dan Cronin, the GOP chairman in DuPage County, argues that it doesn't matter how often other legislators voted "present." They're not running for president. "It is an indecisive vote, and it's a problem for a guy who wants to be president," Cronin said. The Obama campaign said Cronin voted "present" 101 times during the years he served with Obama.)
