Why the TV Attacks on Pelosi?

Wasting money or planting seeds?

That’s the question that ran through my mind as I watched the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee spend oodles of dollars bashing House Democratic Party Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Such few people in the 8th congressional district must know who Pelosi is.

So, why waste money on a “guilt by association” campaign against Melissa Bean, if most voters don’t even know who Pelosi is?

All I can come up with is that the national congressional GOP folks are using David McSweeney’s campaign to build negative name identification for Pelosi, so that, just in case she becomes House Speaker, they can do real damage in 2008 in their comeback attempt.

McHenry County Blog also discusses the Democrats' assault on the county board.

Cal, what you are saying is undoubtedly true. But if Bean keeps up with her bi-polartisanship, it won't matter. Lake County is starting to trend for a more even split of Rs and Ds. I think if Bean contiues what she is doing now, GOP money will not have been well spent.

But, the message penetrates the entire Chicaog media market.

Perhaps the reasons for these ads is a bit more mercenary; the writers of the ads, realizing that their gravy train will come to a halt after November 7 when the Republicans lose their majority in the House, want to make as much money from as many negative ads that they can produce as possible in the handful of days they have left to feed at this campaign trough.

The anti-Pelosi messaging is a national thing, so its probably some of both. Playing to the small crowd who know who Pelosi is and already think she's the devil, while trying to up her negatives/name recognition nationally. That will make it easier for Limbaugh, O'Reilly, etc to demonize her once she's Speaker. Build her up as a big old boogeyman.

Then, for the next 2 years, she'll become a major target for standard GOP anger/hate messaging. But that only works when people know who she is. We've been seeing a lot of this during this election cycle. They've been floating trial balloons on Pelosi, Markos (of DailyKos), and others. Testing negative messaging. The GOP machine is impressive, even if its evil.

If Pelosi's absence from the national scene (along with Ried's) is any indication, then the R's are doing exactly what they ought to be doing. (for 2006 OR 08).

They must be renting Cheney's "Secret Location" from him while he's actually out campaigning.
