CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
-- Robert Novak: From Joliet to powerful D.C. 'prince' - Neil Steinberg
http://www.suntimes.com/news/novak/1090781,CST-EDT-novak05.article
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Though he was based in Washington, Novak's column was originally syndicated through the Chicago Sun-Times, which he considered his home, with pride and loyalty. "Bob has boundless enthusiasm for political journalism, an unmatched capacity for work and an enduring affection for the Sun-Times," said Sun-Times columnist Steve Huntley, who worked closely with Novak, first as metro editor, then as editorial page editor. "Although he wrote three columns a week, a newsletter and books and appeared regularly on television, he always was ready to do more for Sun-Times readers. Whenever big news broke, Bob was there volunteering to write an extra article for the paper. Whenever I asked him to do something special for us, he had only one response: 'When do you need it?' He always got it in before that deadline, and it always reflected the superb reporting and analytical and interpretive talents he demonstrated in his columns across four and a half decades." Novak's column ran in as many as 250 newspapers around the world. His last column appeared in the Sun-Times July 27, and fittingly parsed the nuances of the presidential election, still written with the sharp style that Novak recognized as controversial and reveled in.)

-- An unexpected passage to adventure Pedaling the Illinois Prairie Path is a sweet ride, indeed - Mark Brown
http://www.suntimes.com/news/brown/1090972,CST-NWS-brown05.article
(DIERSEN: My wife and I have been Illinois Prairie Path (IPP) users since we bought a home in Wheaton only four blocks away from it in 1978. We have regularly contributed to the IPP which is a not-for-profit corporation. In 1984, we had Joe Keim build a home right next to the IPP in the middle of Milton Township Precinct 9. I adopted Wheaton Park District's IPP Park in the precinct and on July 5, 2003, hosted a political picnic there -- the 200 attendees included John Cox, Chirinjeev Kathuria, Jim Oberweis, Debra Olson, Randy Hultgren, Andy McKenna, Jim Rasins, and Jack Ryan.)

CAPITOL FAX
-- RICH MILLER: Whatever you feel about Novak (and there’s a lot of negativity about the guy out there), you have to admit that he has driven the news for decades. I don’t know if he knows this or not, but years ago I modeled the Capitol Fax off of the Evans & Novak Report, without the overt partisanship, of course. In many ways, Bob Novak has been a hero of mine, even though we’ve never met, or even communicated. I certainly hope I get the opportunity to visit with him and tell him what he’s meant to me over the years.
http://thecapitolfaxblog.com/2008/08/04/things-you-might-not-know/
(DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, Bob Novak is a hero of mine also. I watched him many many times on the McLaughlin Group and Capital Gang, I regularly read his articles for decades, and I was in the audience a number of times when he spoke including at CPAC. He spoke at a College Republican Club event at Loyola University shortly after Bush won the 2000 election. I attended the event as an alumni wearing my brand new DuPage County Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman magnetic name badge. I was honored that he noticed the badge and asked me for my opinion on why Bush did not get more votes in DuPage County than he did. I told him the main reason was that outrageously, many liberals had moved into DuPage County to take advantage of the prosperity and the safety that conservatives had created there.)

-- House Republicans revolting over oil
http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/08/gas_oil_price_republican_house.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Peter Roskam, an Illinois Republican, said he was at home with his family on Sunday afternoon when his BlackBerry buzzed with word of the day's session. "I loaded up the minivan with our four children, just like the Griswolds, and we drove through the night," he said. Covering the 725 miles from Wheaton, Ill., to Washington in 14 hours, he averaged an energy-efficient 52 miles per hour. "You sense the change that is happening in the debate," Roskam said. "You sense the change that the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, Senator Obama, is beginning to see the light on this and we welcome him to see the light on this . . . "I think if we can continue to push, continue to push, continue to push, then ultimately the American people are going to be winners." The Griswolds, of course, are the ill-starred travelers from National Lampoon's Vacation movies.)

WIS TV
-- GOP Returns for Day 2 of Talkathon - John Bresnahan & Daniel W. Reilly
http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8788969
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If Friday's impromptu House protest session had all the passion of a revival meeting, Monday's Episode II was more like a prayer circle - intense but smaller, with shouts of glory replaced by wishful thinking. Two dozen Republicans kicked off their second day of protests with an array of sometimes inartful, off-topic or histrionic floor speeches ranging in topic from John Quincy Adams' views on slavery to a shout-out to Moses. "Madam Speaker, let my people vote!" said Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), adding a biblical flourish as Monday's action came to a close. But the GOP lawmakers, many of them among the most conservative in the Republican Conference, clearly felt energized by their demand that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) call the House back into session to vote on offshore oil drilling. By the end of the day, Republicans were threatening to keep their uprising going throughout the week and possibly into next week, although the chances of that seem slim.)

BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: Jim Edgar v. Ronald Reagan: Edgar says that he considers audits of government operations a "necessary evil." Reagan had a high opinion of audits of government operations, but sadly, Edgar has a low opinion of such audits. Maybe that helps explain Edgar's low opinion of Diersen. Diersen has been a CPA since 1979, a Certified Internal Auditor since 1981, a licensed CPA since 1982, a Certified Fraud Examiner since 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager since 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor since 1996, and a Forensic Accountant since 1997. Diersen worked for IRS 1971-1980 and most people think of IRS employees as being "auditors." In addition, Diersen worked for GAO 1980-1997. GAO audits government operations.

POLITICO
-- GOP Talkathon to continue 'as long as it takes'
http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0808/GOP_Talkathon_to_continue_as_long_as_it_takes.html
(THE ARTICLE: House Republicans vowed to continue their talkathon on the House floor "as long as it takes," saying Monday they would continue their protest indefinitely if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not allow for a vote on domestic oil drilling. "There are plans underway to be here into next week," said Rep. Mike Pence, one of the organizers of the protest. "We will be here as long as it takes." Aides to House Minority Leader John Boehner said he was expected to return to Washington at the end of the week. House Minority Whip Roy Blunt was expected to return mid-week, according to his aides. With 24 members already back in Washington as of noon Monday, lawmakers said reinforcements were on their way. Rep. Peter J. Roskam of Illinois said he got the call on Sunday afternoon and drove through the night, pulling into the Capitol just before daybreak. "We loaded up the minivan just like the Griswolds," said Roskam, referencing the classic Chevy Chase movie "National Lampoon's Vacation." No word if Roskam saw Christie Brinkley on the highway in a red Ferrari.)
