-- GOP legislator Maureen Murphy fought tirelessly for her causes She became first woman to lead Cook County Republican Party - Mike Thomas
http://www.suntimes.com/news/obituaries/1102984,CST-NWS-xmurphy12.article
(FROM THE ARTICLE: "She didn't wear her faith on her sleeve, but believe me, she practiced her faith in her life," said Paul Caprio, a political consultant who managed Mrs. Murphy's 1998 Board of Review campaign. Decker recalled a remark made by the late U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde when Mrs. Murphy showed up at an event wearing pink. "The congressman got up and said to the audience, 'Maureen Murphy is like a pink flamingo in the barnyard of Cook County politics,' " Decker recalled. "And she was colorful, and she did stand out, and she did try to do her very best given the circumstances of what the political landscape was.")

http://www.suntimes.com/news/sneed/1102760,CST-NWS-SNEED12.article
(THE REPORT: Embattled Gov. Blago was hit with a media scrum yesterday while exiting the City Club luncheon at Maggiano's. The upshot: A cluster of reporters knocked over chairs, uprooted tables and tipped over drinks while shouldering for a spot to hit the beleaguered the gov with questions. The cowboyshot: Before Blago was jostled by the horde, who descended like locusts on a dry prairie, he embraced a recent Sun-Times front-page caricature of him as cowboy actor John Wayne sending in the state troopers to clean up Chicago. The Blago shot: "Evidently some people thought they were insulting me," said the Gov. "I took it as a compliment . . . Why wouldn't you want to be compared to John Wayne?. . . He was always on the side of good vs. evil in the eternal struggle . . . he'd ride into town and be on the side of truth and justice and fair play. He was a great American hero and I don't care how they try to pitch that, I'm taking that as a compliment . . . My wife saw that picture and she loved it." The buckshot: City Club president Jay Doherty also presented the governor with a framed photo of the front-page story wrapped in Sun-Times newsprint. The lastshot: Blago had the last word. When told he would also be presented with a drinking mug, Blago quipped: "Better a mug than a mugshot." You betcha. Getting dissed . . . Pssst! Senate President Emil Jones had three words for Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, whom he regards as a nettlesome tsetse fly, while encountering him outside Maggiano's Monday: "What's your name?")

-- Former state lawmaker Maureen Murphy dies - Nathaniel Zimmer
http://www.southtownstar.com/neighborhoodstar/evergreenpark/1102669,081208maureenmurphy.article
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mrs. Murphy was proud to call herself a conservative, said Mark Decker, who served as executive director of the county party while she was chairwoman and also worked with her on the board of review. He called her "a conservative feminist." "She was always very clear about her interests and her fight for the sanctity of life, that was a big issue for her," he said. Another of her pet issues was ensuring ballot integrity in Cook County, which has a long history of election-day shenanigans. Friends and colleagues repeatedly used the same word to describe Mrs. Murphy: passionate. While "she didn't set out to make people mad," she was not one to mince words, Decker said. He fondly recalled a gathering at which Mrs. Murphy appeared dressed all in pink and former U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, a good friend, called her "a pink flamingo in the barnyard of Cook County politics." "It encapsulated who she was," Decker said. "She did stand out. She was colorful." "I think what I would emphasize most about her is that, no matter where she stood, you knew exactly where she stood," said Lee Roupas, the current Cook County Republican chairman. "She let you know exactly how she felt about a topic. We all respected her greatly for that.")

-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: A "Black Pride Parade" and a "Black Pride Family Picnic" scheduled in Joliet. Why all this emphasis on seeing yourself as a member of a race? Seeing yourself primarily as a member of a particular race promotes divisiveness. The Democrat Party platform promotes divisiveness. It demonizes Whites, and especially older conservative male Whites, as being the cause of all the world's past, present, and future problems. What if someone tried to schedule a "White Pride Parade" or a "White Pride Picnic?"

http://articles.latimes.com/2008/apr/24/nation/na-ayers24
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Born to wealth in the upscale Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn, Ayers, like thousands of other young Americans at the time, was moved to political action by the Vietnam War. He and wife Bernardine Dohrn, now a Northwestern University law professor, were founding members of the Weatherman, an offshoot of the Students for a Democratic Society that claimed responsibility for about a dozen bombings. The group also organized violent antiwar demonstrations in Chicago in 1969 that became known as the Days of Rage. Ayers writes on his blog that he has never escaped his past. Nor has he ever explicitly apologized for it, saying the times and his actions need a more nuanced rendering.)
