Who's the REAL Republican?

Lately, Governor Blagojevich has found great diversion by attacking House Speaker Michael Madigan for acting like a Republican for having the chutzpah to oppose his budget proposals.

What are the Governor's budget proposals that Madigan has opposed?

  • The $7.5 billion Gross Receipts Tax, which even Emil Jones and the Governor's top staff admit would have been passed on to working families in the form of higher prices on everything from gasoline and groceries to auto purchases and home sales;
  • Privatizing the Lottery, a state agency;
  • Increasing state debt by issuing bonds;
  • A massive expansion of gambling, which would enrich state government insiders at the expense of the poor and working class.
So, the Governor wants to balance the state budget on the backs of working families, privative state government, drive the state into debt, and stuff money into the pockets of well-connected insiders.

Sounds like Blagojevich is the Republican to me.

Gov. Sleazy isn't a Republican. However, he may be a lunatic when all is said and done.

What's great about the debate is that "Republican" is an insult in Illinois.

Even with the current mess in Springfield, you have to love a state like this.

Is Rod on to something?

I heard Jack Roeser last night all but endorse Mike Madigan, saying that MJM was the only adult among all caucus leaders in Springfield.

Then Rod steals from Jack Roeser's playbook and calls his political opponent a member of the opposing political party.

Prediction 1: Rod will start throwing the term DINO (Democrat in Name Only) around liberally.

Prediction 2: Rod will be about as successful in accomplishing his political goals as Jack Roeser.

Maybe Mike Madigan will switch parties then.

Democrats win big, can't agree 'cause an odd man --with the air of indictments hanging over him-- insults key members, then they split.

What a mess.

PS Let's not forget Comed + Emil Jones here too... and which party to they belong?

The word "Republican" is an insult for Democrats in Illinois, perhaps. Just because the Governor uses the word "Republican" as an insult, doesn't mean the state of Illinois agrees with him.

I'm liking the trend toward "government union employee" becoming an insult as the people learn how ridiculously extravagant too many of their millionaire pensions have become. Even teachers are getting less respect than they used to get. That's the price you have to pay for selfish greed, which is all the government employee unions care about.

And "Chicago Democrat" is known as more of an insult in Illinois than "Republican" ever will be.

Jeff: who are these millionaires you're writing about? You sound like O'Reilly. Make up an enemy to attack.

Anonymous 3:16 -- Great points, but try to find a name for the Governor that isn't an expletive. It might not be easy, but try.

anon, more than 1100 retired Illinois teachers have pensions more than $110,000 dollars per year. Throw in administrators, managers, supervisors, George Ryan's $195,000 per year, the current crop of politicians, and too many on the state payroll that increased by more than $2 billion last year, and you have more than enough of your enemy.

If Madigan and Jones were to retire today, what would their pensions be? More than $100,000 per year for the rest of their lives with health benefits to boot? Yup. We're going to give them $100,000 per year for life for the crap they are doing right now. Think about it beyond blind partisan perspective.
