Rep. Mike McAuliffe: "he knows how to drive"

The Sun Times quoting McAuliffe on the administrations rehiring of Eugene C. Davis: Controversial aide back on state dime.

Davis’ re-emergence on the state payroll when Blagojevich and legislative leaders are deadlocked on a budget drew bipartisan criticism.

State Rep. Mike McAuliffe (R-Chicago) said his constituents would “hate” Davis’ hiring because of his inexperience in transportation and lack of a college degree. But the lawmaker noted an obvious irony in IDOT’s hiring. “I guess the one thing we know is he knows how to drive,” McAuliffe said.
Now, I wonder how Davis feels about his pension plan and if he thinks rewriting the 1994 law to lower the funding requirements makes sense or if reforming the system along the lines of the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986 is a better fix.

Or maybe Davis is like my buddy who plans for his retirment with ten bucks thrown at lotto tickets each week.

McAuliffe doesn't have a college degree either!

Davis ran for Alderman of the 6th Ward. The incumbent Ald. Fredrenna Lyle busted him up in one of her constituent newsletter over his role with the state.

“His duties basically are to work with local governments, community groups, traffic-safety groups and the general public to promote highway-safety programs,” IDOT spokesman Mike Claffey said. “He was hired based on his previous experience in government.”

This type of political hack job just drives me crazy. I can't think straight enough to write a coherent remark.

Blagojevich laid off of a bunch of technical managers with those same duties (they also performed many more duties such as grant writing/management, claims processing) in July 1, 2004. The next day those duties were given to Blagojevichs Local Agency Liaisons (a.k.a. campaign workers)under a new division called IDOT Division of External Affairs which only lasted about a year because nobody wanted to work with the political hacks.

crazy?!!! - the IDOT Div of External Affairs is still there. External Affairs didn't come into being until a couple of years after the local agency liaisons (LAL) were hired.

When I worked at IDOT, we were told that the LALs were hired to be able to translate the engineerese into everyday language so that the local agencys' could understand the IDOT engineers. Unfortunately, we had to esplain everything to the LAL in every day language so he could puke out what we just ssaid. What was even funnier was that most of the time, he got it wrong even after we wrote out the script for him.
