Courts deal Rod setback on video game ban

Gov. Blagojevich suffered a setback yesterday in his effort to ban violent video games.

Dave McKinney from the Chicago Sun-Times writes:

Gov. Blagojevich's bid to restrict the sale of violent and sexually explicit video games was tossed out Friday by a federal judge who said the state came "nowhere close" to showing the idea is constitutional.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly represented a victory to Illinois retailers who immediately challenged the law that Blagojevich signed last summer and a blow to the governor's office.

This is not the first time this issue has been struck down by the Courts, and surely Rod knew going into this PR stunt that this would most likely be the end result.

UPDATE

What other programs (Rx program for example) can you name of Rod's that have been a complete failure?

you folks don't get it. It makes no difference to Rod and his handlers whether he is sustained by the courts. In fact, because the courts shot down this bit of nonsense, now he can rant about how "the courts are out of touch" etc.

He got the PR he needed to divert the attention of the public from the real problems of state government, just as he did when he got into the fight about judge salary increases and was also shot down by the courts.

"Bread and circuses" Rod and his minions are banking on the public being stupid enough to be diverted from determining that all his administration has done is run the state into the ground for Rod's political gain.

You guys are dead on. Judging by Rep. Fritchey's post on his blog, the good news is that we are not alone in this thinking.

Although not actually a program, how about the failed flu vaccine procurement. The actual contract for the procurement deal was written after the Governor's special drug advocate knew the state would never receive federal approval of the vaccine imports.

How about last year's children's book purchasing deal? The Governor's staff was hoping to be able to buy these books, and along with the books, send PR materials.

There's a pretty big failure coming up with the AllKids 'payment' plan. The managed care model that is supposed to pay for AK is nowhere close to being ready for implementation on July 1, and the administrative start-up costs for HFS will likely be much higher than HFS lead the legislature to believe during the veto session. Had the GA been good elected officials, they would have insisted on tabling AllKids until the costs and savings could be truly assessed.

How about the $20 million in finance charges (not in the budget) that the state will incur this year for the recent $1 billion in short term borrowing? Again, not a program, but a failure nonetheless. And there will still be unbudgeted prompt payment liabilities that could double this amount (another form of finance charges).

I have this cool new videogame like that I can be this cool character with good hair and it has cool Elvis music, and it has other characters who help me, and it is not good for kids because you get to screw the people who helped you, and you get to kill your father in law, it is kind of violent and sends the wrong message.

The GROD XBOX or Playstation game is cool, you can kill grandparents, lie and backstab people. Amazing graphics.

The new game you can make millions of dollars for Tony Resko and Chris Kelly. This is good training for kids in hand eye coordination and to be hypocritical crook politicians in training.

We should ban the arcade game that Rodislav Blagojevich thinks is called being governor. Unfortunately, Rod's game is our reality.
