Eileen Byrne, Melissa Bean, and George Ryan

I seldom listen to talk radio but caught Eileen Byrne by accident this morning. She was quoting Melissa Bean saying yesterday she had no comment on George Ryan's conviction. The Congresswoman didn't have enough information about Ryan to comment.

Startling thing to say. I called Bean's office and asked if they'd confirm she said that.

Maybe this is widely known already. Like I say, I rarely listen to talk radio. But stay tuned.

Let me get this right:

Bill Baar is startled because a Democratic Congresswoman does not rip a retired Illinois Republican?

You startle easy.

Actually its just another example that she is out of her league. I saw her debate Crane, I've seen her at town hall meetings and I've read the newspaper accounts from the campaign...she has no idea on issues of importance. Luckily she has a staff to tell her what to say...that is once they get approval from DC Dems.

grand old partisan 4:02 PM

I would think that, just as a resident of Illinois and a former constituent of Ryan's, she would have SOME sort of opinion and reaction about the story.

I caught the end of an interview about Ryan on WGN-TV at noon, so she apparently figured out something to say.

I figured it was just the Chicago media giving her an appearance she did not deserve.

If WGN wanted to interview someone with a relevant perspective, it would interviewed Rahm Emanuel or Jan Schakowsky, wouldn't you think?

Get serious.

If she would have expressed outrage over the acts of Gov. Ryan, you people would be upset that she did not blame Blago. That would have been your partisan headline "Bean Refuses to Call Blago a Crook."

Why should she get involved in a debate that does not concern her? Shouldn't she be focused on cleaning up the Noe and DeLay mess in Congress, where she has a vote, than with an Illinois jury, where she has no vote?

That being said, let's get back the main post though. Startled? Were you really startled?

BOO! Did that startle you?

Bill Baar 4:37 PM

Anytime I find myself saying geez I could make more sense on the spot then that, I'm startled.

I think Byrne was startled. Bean and Topinka were speaking together at some lunchon.

Blagojevich canceled 15 mins before he was to appear somewhere to avoid talking about it according to Byrne.

Clearly I was one Congressional District off when I joked that Baar would demand to know where Duckworth stood on the Ryan conviction. ;)

Listen, Bill, if Bean or any pol didn't know what the 22 counts were or this or that it's better to keep your mouth shut and simply say you didn't know enough details yet.

This is clearly a case of darned if she does/darned if she doesn't. Admit it, you would've jumped down her throat if she mispoke because she didn't have all the info already. Even as an ex-gov the Ryan trial was a state issue, not a DC issue (though the abilities of the Federal prosecutor in charge of the case should put a certain former gov from Texas on notice).

As for the ANON jack#$% that wrote about needing to hear what the DC leadership said... it's far better to be a Democrat and have an independent mind than to be a dittohead conservative who can't think for themselves and has to wait to hear the weakly (oops, I meant "weekly") talking points from Limbaugh or O'Reilly.

Your ad hominem attack was not only baseless, it was also stupid.

Bill Baar 5:04 PM

I don't think I would have jumped on Bean at all. I think Bean and Duckworth are exactly the kind of Democrats the party needs...

...but they do need to be saavy and this wasn't saavy.

Bill Baar 5:06 PM

as a footnote, I was on my way to a funeral today when I heard this show.

My brother-in-law and wife's cousin were there. They're both lawyers and they thought this case was a mess and Ryan would easily win the appeal.

So, Melissa Bean does the prudent thing and chooses not to comment, because to comment would be to invite the rath and smears of the dittohead clowns, but that's a bad thing in Baar's world.

A couple of knuckleheaded lawyers at a funeral, who one guesses haven't even looked at the transcripts, claim the case will be reversed on appeal and Baar feels that's worthy of note.

Stick to defending the demented rantings of Stanek, at least that's good for a laugh.

I'm doing the prudent thing...

Judy canceled a scheduled press conference, too, when she received word that the verdict was coming down.

I doubt very much that she was worried about Ryan questions; she barely knows the guy.

Bill Baar 9:57 AM

Abe,
I agree with you. Espcially after reading Rich Miller today about the Sun Times and GR's chances for appeal.

Now, what's this about my two lawyers getting it wrong yesterday?
