Hubris, anyone?

Originally posted at Peoria Pundit:

The Illinois Central College board decided to name its brand new $3.5 million "career center" in East Peoria after the state legislator who helped them get the cash, State Rep. David Leitch (R-73rd District). Board Member James Polk was the only member of ICC's board with enough self respect and dignity to vote against it. Leitch has been a real sugar daddy to ICC, which has a hugermongus taste for land-grabbing and mission drift, far beyond the original laudable goal of providing an inexpensive college education.

Leitch helped arrange for ICC to lease the former Zeller Mental Health, which uses the facility to offer "culinary arts" courses. This sweetheart deal essentially ended efforts to of State Sen. George Shadid and former State Rep. Ricca Slone to get Zeller reopened after Former Gov. George Ryan closed it. This created massive hardships for the mentally ill and their families in Peoria because the local hospitals did not offer enough beds for them. But that's OK, because Peoria needs more fry-cooks. All those fired Bemis Bag workers need jobs somewhere, right?

There should be a law, with good reason, that prohibits any public building or program from being named after any living public official. James Thompson Center and the John Stroger Hospital in Chicago are two examples that boil my blood. These people did nothing special that another person in that position may not have also tried to do. It is the public's money, it is the public's facility. What arrogance to name a facility after a person just because they got some public money for a project.

I've thought of Leitch as a good and competent legislator, but my opinion of him will forever be damaged if he allows his name to be attached to a building merely because he "got" some money for it.

Thanks for posting on this topic - I think it's just plain wrong.

Isn't Polk the Democratic State Central Committeeman for the 18th Congressional District?

Ahh... nothing quite like a democratic bitch session about something that isn't neccesarily bad. Hey, people that do a lot for the district, get something named after them. There is nothing wrong with that at all. There seems to be some jealousy here. Isn't it so unfortunate that it couldn't be a democrat's name... Now to dedicate to my new toilet... the "Rod R Blagojevich Family Toilet." I like it. Maybe come up with a cool slogan like... "If you think Rod spews a lot of crap..." There. Now be happy, Bill, something got named after a democrat....

Call me a "Democrat" again, L.L., and I might have to track you down, knock on your door, and slap you upside the head with a rolled-up newspaper. I an a libertarian, you silly twit. I find being called a "Democrat" almost as offensive as being called "Republican."

Lovie "people do a lot for the district" - excuse me but I thought that was the job of the public official.

There is something wrong with it, it's demeaning to the other people who also work hard to benefit the community college students, the communities they serve in any sort of public capacity but aren't on the ballot. I'm sorry, this is another example of business as usual that should change.

There should be a state law or policy regarding who or what can get what named after them. Starting with sitting, current elected officials - they should not be on the list for naming rights.

If the whole GA was made up of people as good as Dave Leitch, Illinois would be a better place to live. Why shouldn't his constituents honor him?
