It has long been very easy for legislators at either the federal or state level to screw veterans while praising them at the same time. Since Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations (such as the VFW, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America) are prohibited from endorsing candidates for elective office, the influence of veterans is often muted.
What Illinois veterans have to do is to seek out their local legislators and demand that the state meet its obligations to veterans, PERIOD. Even importantly (since most incumbents in the General Assembly do not have a serious challenge for re-election this fall) is to force the gubernatorial candidates to show exactly what their administration will do for veterans.
If you don't speak out now, you will only get more of the same crap in the years to come.
