Chicago Wards voting Against Big Box Ordinance

Soap Blog Chicago has a nice map of the Big Box vote by ward.

Leftists used to say of Hyde Park: it's a place where white and black alike, unite against the poor.

Overlay median household incomes on this graph and I think you'd see Chicago's wards, white and black alike, uniting against the poor.

I'd love to debunk this but I don't have the GIS mapping tools to overlay the census info with ward maps.

Still two graphics to help eyeball some comparisons:

changes in median household income

changes in poverty rate

My observations: The two west side wards that voted against the big box ordinance have seen increases in income and decreases in poverty. Large parts of four south side wards (6,8,9,10) saw the opposite for both statistics. Those wards' aldermen voted for the ordinance.

So, were the poor uniting against the poor?

I wish I had GIS too.

The red goes right down the State Street corridar, and then on Madison street west. And then about half way up the lake front.

It looks like these wards of the majority of Chicago's public housing.

Anyone who's looked at demographic maps of Chicago over the years knows the pattern and although there are interesting exceptions, this is a very typical map.

You need GIS to understand, just having spent time over the years exploring Chicago is enough maybe.

But GIS is fun stuff...
