Chicago pro-Israel rally: Topinka stands up for the Jewish state

Crossposted on Marathon Pundit.

Republican candidate for Illinois governor Judy Baar Topinka had this to say at a pro-Israel rally in Chicago yesterday:

When Israel is attacked, we are attacked.

Her Democratic opponent, incumbent Rod Blagojevich, was not at the rally, which shouldn't be a surprise. Last year, Blago appointed a senior member of the notorious anti-Semitic Nation of Islam to the state's hate crime panel. Four Jewish members of the panel did the honorable thing and resigned in protest.

One can oppose Israel's policies and not be anti-semitic. Or are the editors of Ha'aretz all of a sudden anti-semitic in your view?

Jewish Voter,

Farrahkan's not opposed to Israeli policies. He's opposed to Jews.

He wants to see the streets of Jerusalem cleansed with blood because Israel, as a liberal democracy, considered allowing a gay pride parade there. Blagojevich's commission can't denounce this.

And then we have Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei writing in an editorial Monday in the Iranian daily Kayhan.

"The Muslim peoples and many other peoples think that, in global geopolitics, there is no such thing as the state of Israel, and that the [entity] which presently bears this name is a usurping and rootless state that has imposed its parasitic presence over the region and over Palestine with the support of the arrogant powers. [This entity] invents a new crime every day. It causes men, women, and innocent children to bleed to death, or else deports them from their homeland and turns them into refugees. In light of this 'problem,' which is perfectly obvious, the annihilation of the Zionist regime is not only a religious and national duty, but also a universal human duty, from which no Muslim or free human being can be exempt.

Annihilation of the Zionist regime... I think he means he's going to exterminate Jews... I don't need Noam Chomsky to deconstruct this for me.

Blagojevich is a member of Hezbollah--in Arabic Party of God, and Blagojevich is the god

And Claudette Muhammad is still a member of the hate crimes panel. Too bad David Duke doesn't live in Illinois.

Hey anon 7:32, even scumbags like Hezbollah have some membership standards!

I'm with the first commenter, only I'm not Jewish. I oppose Israel's policies, and feel sad for the progressives in Israel, Lebanon and Palestine, and elsewhere in the Middle East. I only hope the bombs get the hardliners more so than the progressives. Unfortunately, they will create more hardliners than they kill. Too bad those doing the fighting can't think that far ahead. Or don't wish to.

Die Valkyrie,

Yes, we can tell your with the first commenter...

...via Independent Online,

Wagner's music is not officially banned in Israel, but it goes unplayed in concert halls there through a forceful emotional taboo. In 2001, Barenboim and his orchestra, the Berlin Staatskapelle, scheduled a performance of Die Walküre at the Israel Festival. The issue went to parliament and the Knesset decided it should be cancelled. The orchestra played Schumann and Stravinsky instead, but after the encore Barenboim addressed the hall directly, asking: "As a musician, I would like to ask my audience: do you want to hear some Wagner? If not, no problem. If you do, we have the music. And if you are angry, please be angry with me, not the orchestra and not the festival."

Bill Baar 11:49 AM

Abraham Herschson, a member of parliament, has asked Barenboim ‘‘on behalf of the 300,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel not to forget his Jewish roots and to consider that Jews were led to the gas chambers to the sound of Wagner’s music.’’

...above included with Barenboim's response.

Get a copy Triumph des Willens to feel/see the effect of Wagnerian Paganism.

That would be some very simplistic, and, uh, imaginative, conclusion-drawing.

All I have is the name to run with...

...simple for sure but it conjures up some ugly images

I'm no fan of Blago and find his conduct offensive as Governor, but I also find this act by Topinka offensive.

Israel is engaging in aggression and killing innocent people. They are clearly not just "defending" themselves.

I'm not sure what Topinka or Blago should be doing at such a rally, but if this is Topinka's attempt to get Jewish votes, I think it's foolish. There are something like 400,000 Muslims in the Chicago area who are highly educated doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc and they have economic clout, too.

Whoever advised Topinka to go to this rally should be fired.
