CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS
-- Don't recall governor; give voters better choice - John F. DiLeo, Palatine
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/mag/article.pl?articleId=29766
(THE LETTER: Greg Hinz is absolutely right in his evaluation of the recall bill pending in the state Legislature ("Recall a bad idea for a bad guv," ChicagoBusiness.com, April 16). I would just add two more points. First, there are times when a recall is justified, but this isn't one of them. Consider Bill Clinton, who in 1992 ran for president on a promise of a big middle-class tax cut. Weeks after he won the election, he announced that he would break that promise and then pushed and signed a massive tax increase in the spring. Those are grounds for recall. We cannot say the same of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a tax-and-spend Democrat who governs roughly as he said he would in 2002. Second, Illinois Republicans have had two shots at Mr. Blagojevich. Each time, the GOP passed up the opportunity to present a clear contrast to the voters. The GOP could have run conservative Sen. Patrick O'Malley in 2002, but nominated the more moderate Jim Ryan instead. After Mr. Blagojevich spent four years showing Illinois voters why we should throw him out, the GOP could have run conservative Sen. Bill Brady in 2006. Instead, who did it nominate? The very liberal Judy Baar Topinka. We don't need to recall our governors. The opposition party just needs to recall its "circular firing squad" primary voters. What we need is a real two-party system, one in which the Republicans present a clear choice — a conservative choice — for every race.)
