Chicago City Council voting to oppose an invasion of Iran?

* I was looking through stories to compile for the morning shorts today, and had to rub my eyes when I saw this:

Undeterred, local politicians have decided to take another shot at repressing international conflict: They're considering whether to oppose a U.S. invasion of Iran.

My question, why? The City Council did the same thing before the Iraq War, and President Bush invaded anyway.

In committee experts talked about events like the 1981 attack on Iraq's Osiraq nuclear reactor and the relationship between Iran and the newly formed Iraqi government. Should Chicago alderman really be discussing nuclear weaponry in committee?

* The rationale behind the move went like this:

The federal government doesn't seem to be listening, so we'd better talk to the local lawmakers who will listen.

"This is not the ideal way to be doing this," said Scott Ritter, a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq who testified in favor of the resolution. "But nobody in Washington, D.C., wants to take this on. Do I sit back and say nothing, or do I take the indirect approach?"

* I understand the feeling, and agree that they aren't listening. However, going to the Chicago City Council on this doesn't make much sense to me. If you really want to show support don't pass a resolution through the City Council, take it to the streets. If you want to show support in Chicago then hold protests there. If you think that the federal government isn't listening, then march on the Capitol.

What happened to the spirit of the anti-war movement during Vietnam? You didn't see people pleading with their alderman to pass a resolution. You saw people marching in the streets, or flooding the National Mall in staunch disagreement.

Maybe things would be different if there was a draft.

Wow.

Any word about a City resolution asking the Governor to pay Medicaid claims current so that Chicago Hospitals (including Stroger) could continue to treat the poor?

I guess not. Too political.

We haven't got the Army forces necessary to invade Iran.

That is in spite of the fact that Iranian forces (the Iranian Revolutionary Guard - IRG) have invaded southern Iraq and have been providing arms to the Sunni al Qaeda (in spite of the fact that the IRG are Shi'ite) for the past three years.

It is the IRG that has rearmed and trained Hezbollah in Lebanon and is supplying missiles to Hamas.

So Iran has been meddling for some time outside of their borders. But we still do not have the ground forces for an Iran invasion.

This is a case of the anti-Bush people attempting to organize politically into an anti-McCain force before the convention, Organize a Popular Front.

And keep people's attention away from the sorry state of the Illinois economy.

The Medicaid payments idea is a good one.

Or, they might actually vote to end gang war in Chicago. That's at least their own bailiwick.

As of 10 days ago, the Iraqi government disputes both of these claims.

Our government has been making these claims for 2 years now, but our allies in Iraq still disagree, why?

In theory, I don't see anything wrong with the Chicago City Council considering a resolution like this. If that's what their constituents want, then so be it. If the constituents don't want this, hopefully they will take appropriate action at the next election. Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. I think a resolution passed by the official body representing that population could be of some use in determining public opinion.

Maybe the Chicago City Council could pass a resolution related to their own jurisdiction, such as one condemning the tons of garbage laying around the thoroughfares of the city?

The utter incompetency of the council to resolve issues such as potholes makes me scratch my head as to why they would be involved in foreign policy.

Maybe Alderman Rick Munoz should try to stop the killings in his ward.
