-- Obama, McCain spar over Iraq timetable and affirmative action - John McCormick
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-campaign-obama_28jul28,0,6666589.story
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Obama's UNITY appearance coincided with his renewed efforts to appeal to minority journalists and media. A week ago, his campaign named a new "communications director for African America media" and is also appointing similar outreach specialists at more local levels. At UNITY, organizers reminded conference participants that his appearance was being broadcast nationally and they should maintain "professional decorum." Before Obama arrived, a panel discussed the question of journalistic objectivity, including whether journalists should clap for politicians in public. As it happened, Obama received a standing ovation from much of the audience at the start and end of his appearance. One journalist was also overheard wishing him luck, while another exclaimed, "He touched me!" as she left the ballroom.)

(FROM THE COMMENTARY: Earlier, an NPR editor asked panelists whether it was appropriate for journalists to clap for Obama -- and the question uncorked a mounting frustration among many black reporters. "The total duality of it gets to me," said Les Payne, a member of the panel. Payne is a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists and an editor at Newsday. "There's no question that mainstream journalists completely adore McCain and cover him favorably," Payne said. "Now it is: You cannot do what we do routinely . . . and have been doing for a century," he said. "You have been writing favorable stories about [President] Bush for eight years. This is a serious problem and one of the reasons why this organization was founded," he said. But no respectable journalist wants to be viewed as a "lapdog" instead of a "watchdog." Obama was forced to tiptoe around prickly questions about reparations, immigration, and whether he went too far in correcting a lingering misconception among some voters that he is a Muslim.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: "Thank you so much. I extend greetings from my pastor. He's like my priest. His name is Jeremiah Wright." With those words, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama introduced himself at a Christian church in northern Israel. No one in attendance had ever heard of the Rev. Wright or his race-baiting and America-bashing comments. Few people even recognized Barack Obama. That is because it was January 2006, not July 2008. It was during Mr. Obama's first political pilgrimage to the Middle East that he delivered a warm message from his pastor in Chicago. I was 10 feet from Obama when he mentioned Rev. Wright that day in Fassouta near the Lebanese border, but I hadn't heard of him either and since forgot that Obama had carried such a greeting 6,500 miles from his Chicago pastor. It was only while researching for Obama's second trip to Israel that the quote jumped at me like a squirrel walking over hot coals.)

AMERICAN SPECTATOR
-- Barack Hubris Obama - John Tabin
http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=13599
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It's possible that Obama forgets that he still needs to be elected because a competitive general election is totally unfamiliar to him. In Chicago, where the Republican Party barely exists, the winner of the Democratic primary automatically wins the general election. During the 2004 race for U.S. Senate, the Illinois GOP was in full meltdown and failed to field a serious candidate, settling instead on the buffoonish perennial election-loser Alan Keyes; Obama easily crushed him. Indeed, even in primaries Obama has had an amazingly easy time of it. In his first election to the state senate, he played Chicago hardball and got all his opponents kicked off the ballot by challenging their petition signatures. He faced no serious opposition in his reelection campaigns. In the 2004 Senate primary, his most formidable opponent, Blair Hull, lost his considerable lead in the polls when his ex-wife's allegations of domestic abuse became public, clearing the path for Obama. Until he ran for president, Obama's toughest race was the one he lost, for Bobby Rush's seat in the U.S. House.)

MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER
-- JUNE 25, 1997 FLASHBACK: Liberals Rule Newsrooms
http://www.mediaresearch.org/cyberalerts/1997/cyb19970625.asp
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Newspaper staffs have become even less conservative over the past eight years, a poll for the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) found. Last fall, ASNE polled 1,037 journalists at 61 papers of all sizes. Released in April, The Newspaper Journalists of the 90s report discovered: -- "In 1996 only 15 percent of the newsroom labeled itself conservative/Republican or leaning in that direction, down from 22 percent in 1988" when the ASNE last conducted a comprehensive survey. Those identifying themselves as independent jumped from 17 to 24 percent while the percent calling themselves "liberal/Democrat" or "lean" that way held steady, down one point to 61 percent. -- The bigger the paper, the more liberal the staff: "On papers of at least 50,000 circulation, 65 percent of the staffs are liberal/Democrat or lean that way. The split at papers of less than 50,000 is less pronounced: still predominantly liberal, but 51-23 percent." -- "Women are more likely than men to fall into one of the liberal/Democrat categories," as just 11 percent said they were conservative or leaned that way. Minorities "tend to be more liberal/Democrat," with a piddling 3 percent of blacks and 8 percent of Asians and Hispanics putting themselves on the right. The least liberal: 20 percent of those 50-plus in age were conservative or leaned that way. Ideological imbalance isn't a concern, however, to ASNE which believes skin color and sex has the most impact on reporting. The poll plugged in three groups as responders were asked "How would you describe your newspaper's commitment to...." The three: "ethnic and race diversity," "gender diversity," and "fairness on sexual orientation." So how did the media establishment react to this latest evidence that reporters overwhelming view the world through a liberal prism? The poll numbers led a media think tank leader to pen an article titled, "The Myth of the Liberal Slant.")
