GOPUSA ILLINOIS Daily Clips - June 9, 2008

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
-- 2008 Illinois Republican Party direct election documents available in searchable PDF format on the Files page of the
www.gopillinois.com website - Dave Diersen
www.gopillinois.com
-- FIRST DOCUMENT (two pages): Resolution in favor of return to direct election of Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) members which Platform and Resolutions Committee member Dave Diersen provided electronically to all the committee members on June 4 and submitted again at the Friday June 6 committee meeting at the state convention in Decatur. Sadly, during meeting, because of opposition by some committee members to some of the "whereas" paragraphs, Diersen reluctantly amended that resolution to strike all but the following: "Be it resolved, that this 2008 Illinois Republican State Convention hereby approves, by a majority of the delegates in attendance, a return to direct election by Republican primary electors of all State Central Committeemen and State Central Committeewomen for the Illinois Republican Party, as authorized in 10 ILCS 5/7-8(a)." While that amended resolution failed to pass, it did receive 8 votes which qualified it to go to the floor of the convention with a minority report. During the June 6 committee meeting, Diersen was not allowed to submit a resolution that would send the direct election issue to the floor of the convention without taking a position either in favor of it or in opposition to it. Also, outrageously, while IRP Chairman McKenna was allowed to address the committee in opposition to direct election, Senator Lauzen was not allowed address the committee in favor of direct election.
-- SECOND DOCUMENT (one page): Resolution in opposition to return to direct election of IRP SCC members which was not provided committee members until after the aforesaid resolution was voted on, and which sadly, the committee passed. According to the IRP, on the floor of the convention, 556 delegates of the 857 delegates stood up in favor of this resolution, 186 stood up against it, and apparently 115 did not stand for either resolution or were not on the floor when the IRP took its counts. The resolution outrageously argues that "the Convention Committee on Platform and Resolutions has conducted an extensive hearing on the question of whether the State Central Committee should be directly elected or elected by Republican ward, township, and precinct committeemen." Platform and Resolutions Committee members had been told that their committee would be given a full hour during the convention and that individual delegates would be allowed to address the full convention for up to three minutes each on items the committee set to the floor of the convention. But sadly, outrageously, that did not happen.

HOUSTON CHRONICLE
-- Texas GOP fears grouchy voters won't go to polls Convention opens here amid some discontent within the party - R.G. Ratcliffe
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5826424.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many of the grass-roots Texas Republicans see presumptive presidential nominee John McCain as not conservative enough. Others still support presidential candidate Ron Paul. Some are unhappy over immigration, high federal spending, a sagging national economy and rising gasoline prices. "A lot of them, and rightly so in many cases, are mad. They're concerned," said Roger Williams, chairman of the Texas GOP's voter turnout efforts this year. "What we've got to do is alleviate those concerns and get them to vote." . . . Delegates on Friday will hear from former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former presidential contenders Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. Romney is McCain's designated surrogate speaker at the convention. Cathie Adams, president of the Texas Eagle Forum, said McCain is not building bridges with the grass roots by sending Romney to speak to the Texas convention in his place. "It would have been better if he had come himself," Adams said. Adams said many delegates to the convention will want to be reassured about McCain on immigration. She said many are upset that he supports a process of granting citizenship to those who entered the country illegally. Adams said McCain cannot win just by telling voters the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is bad. "Everyone I know is unhappy with the prospects of Obama," Adams said. "But they'll stay home rather than just go out and vote against someone.")
