Mainstream Republicans Chilling With Mainstream Republicans

You'll have to excuse me for not providing additional commentary about the GRT or the unfortunate indictment of Fast Eddy. I think the Northwestern Law Center ought investigate and demand a report about the forthcoming wrongful conviction. Instead, here's a post I wrote a while back and just hadn't gotten reminded about by the Crossroads of the Illinois Conservative Community - But Only The Parts of The Conservative Community Who Think Exactly Like Us.

By way of Chicago Log Cabin Republicans, seems that Judy Baar Topinka, Tony Peraica, and Christine Radogno were sighted alive and well at a Log Cabin Republican Event featuring the national president Patrick Sammon. Obviously, this is just another attempt by the radical and powerful yet tiny 1% of Americans, Soddamist lobby to shove their rock solid, throbbing agenda down the throats of Americans and destroy the family, the institution of marriage, and keep shows like FOX's "24" off the air under their thought crimes anti-'homosexual hate' legislation.

In the case of JBT, this is fairly expected seeing as RoeserCo essentially attempted to torpedo her gubernatorial campaign by way of homophobic girly men like J. Matt Barber. In fact, Chicago Free Press (the local LGBT publication up here) all but nodded Topinka for the governors mansion - coincidentally opposite a VW ad depicting two men lying in bed debating which car to buy. Topinka has always been cool with queer folk, thus queer folk have always been cool with her.

It's particularly surprising though, coming from a guy like Peraica whom I always thought was kind of a tool. I had never really paid that much attention to him before his failed election last year and I certainly have only paid marginal attention to him in his post-defeat whatever-the-hell he's doing. I'm still not in mindset that this makes Peraica any less of a tool - as Peracia was one of those dicks who had their names yoinked from the '06 "We Welcome the Gay Games" resolution. Suffice to say, I'm not convinced that Peracia is anything that he wasn't prior to his loss in '06. We'll see the next time he runs for something: If he doesn't ahem bend over for Uncle Jack, that picture will haunt him.

It does, however, take a certain amount of testicular fortitude to show up at a LCR event. If you're not in the know, it's pretty safe to say that the LCR's are probably one of the most hated organizations on either side of the aisle. Democrats, Liberals, and the vast majority of LGBTI folks freakin' hate the Log Cabin folks because they're generally viewed as being self-loathing/hating closet cases at worst and just head in the sand at best. The animosity towards LCR's ranges from the very passive, benign and matter of fact (on display at Pam's House Blend - a good friend of the blog.) to the extreme aggressive which you can see elsewhere.

Don't think that LGBTQI republicans get a free pass at the GOP table either. It's pretty obvious as to why: locally and nationally the keys to the GOP ideological car have been handed over to evangelical wingnuts. Despite the fact that a sizable amount of queer folk remain fiscally conservative leaning, the vocal fundies still can't stand the idea that gay people exist - let alone share certain ideological similarities to them. That might force them to the conclusion that queer folk are just like normal ol' regular people or - to put it in more troll-like offensive terms: that normal ol' regular people are just like queer folk. Stick that in Porno Petey's craw and let him chew.

LCR's have a rough run at things. It mostly stems from the fact that modern political election doctrine is, to a great extent, based on letting political extremists do your noisemaking for you. You find fiery charged issues, you exploit them, you let your party's extremists do a lot of squawking on the internets, and essentially peer pressure moderates to inch their way to more and more extreme positions - maybe not forever - but at least for the 4 months leading up to the election. This operating doctrine is something that the GOP finds itself entirely dependent on due to their own failures at seeking out and developing winning issues. Since 'gay' is a hot, hot, hot XXX issue amongst the fundies, there's increasing pressure for GOP candidates to take anti-queer stances to take advantage of fundie static pre-election which leaves Log Cabin types in the precarious position of having to choose between the ideology if fiscal stability provided by real Conservative philosophy and the desire to not be a the permanent ass end of second class citizenship which is best answered by the Dems.

The short of it: I have a good deal of respect for the crap that the LCR's put up with. Since I'm a straight ally with some conservative and libertarian leanings when I say "Let'em marry", all I have to worry about is some knuckle dragger calling me a 'homo'. I've been called far worse by far better. Once some of these folks step into the world of Log Cabin Republicans - they're alienating themselves from - well - everyone.

To see it in action, you can Family Tax Payer Network who chooses to headline the topic with "[Peracia, Topinka]Cozying up with a homosexual, anti-Bush group". Left out of the head line is "Republican", but remember: You can't be a human being or a Republican if you have sex with men.

Further, last year the Chicago Chapter of the Log Cabins assisted other gay activists in preparing the legal challenge to the Protect Marriage Illinois petitions – those hundreds of thousands of signatures that so many dedicated Republicans worked so hard gathering across Illinois [in Chinatown, from people who couldn't read, write, or speak English].

Yes! Yes!! How dare they stand up for their own civil liberties!

How hypocritical that a group that preaches about the “Big Tent” turns on the President and the base when they don’t get their way on THEIR single issue.

Peraica’s and Radogno’s support of the Log Cabins is a poke in the eye to every Republican who believes in the Republican Platform – and especially to the thousands who worked so hard gathering signatures for the Protect Marriage Illinois initiative.

Insightful post DanL. I think we are about to see a sea change in the IL GOP. Roeser is clueless and backwards, as usual. The new Cook Co GOP is making inroads in bulding a broad based coalition, and with Clark Pellette back in charge of the Chicago GOP things are looking up. Paul Caprio has been working behind the scenes to expand the Cook GOP's appeal, and feels that cozying up with the gays will help earn some points in the local media.

It should be noted that many Republican committeeman are gay both closeted and out. The current executive director of the ILGOP did have a bad encounter with the former ed (director not dysfunction)Brad Goodrich. Molestation is not part of being homosexual even in the political context.

Paul Caprio should be commended for doing outreach to this group.

DanL you have incredible and insightful posts and have a clear vision for the the ILGOP. There are attorneys with big screen TVs who agree with you and many others of the big tent to stop the knuckle dragging haters.
You are so funny talking about the hard, throbbing agenda rammed down throats and Uncle Jack Roeser bending Peraica over. Jack Roeser is probably a closeted self hating "queer".

Ronald Krol would make an excellent outreach person for the Illinois GOP. Allen Fore could bring many new younger people both gay and straight who support gay rights.

What happened to Clark Pellet?
He is true profile in courage?

Dan, you are right!!!! The indictment of Edward Vrdolyak is an effort by an anti-Catholic ethnic and anti-Croatian overly expansive Federal government who is criminalizing politics abd making criminal that which is common practice in Illinois. The indictment of Vrdolyak could set precedence and create a template of indictment of other good political operatives from John Daley for insuring the so called hired trucks or John Daley's insurance at O'Hare or Jeremiah Joyce's McDonalds at O'Hare or the real estate deals of Oscar D'Angelo and Michael Marchese.

The Federal government is not going after Sam Zell or Haliburton.
How did Patrick Fitzgerald get appointed? Politics. How did the Bush administration appointments come in? Politics. There is no Federal Shakman.

So what if Ed Vrdolyak got a finders fee on some real estate transactions? Who cares if Jeremiah Joyce owns golf courses and land where airports are going to be built. It does not prove anything. Who cares if Michael Marchese buys property for $1 if he develops it well.

The Vrdolyak is like the Sorich indictment by criminilizing previously acceptable real estate practices in Illinois. It also targets good guys from real neighborhoods. Just at the priest from Nativity of Our Lord said: Jesus was also indicted and a convicted felon.

If Vrdolyak threw a party for his defense, a lot of people would show up. Just like Sorich he is a stand up guy.

Why is Peraica a tool?
Because he did not support the gay games? (which was an economic flop)
Are gay people excluded from the Olympics?

Is Ronald Krol the new Cook County GOP ED?

You may see a change in the GOP but it wont be to be a fairy lover anytime soon. The LCR does not represent the party. I couldn't care less what they do in the closet however I have no intention of breaking bread together. No I am not a member of Jack's group but I am an active member of the party.

I have to laugh. Look at the voting. We (conservatives) sent those that chose to walk in the Gay parades or who where not up to Republican standards a message. "Keep walking" and they are. If the party ignores us we simply vote them out. There are more of us conservatives than you think and we demand to be heard and we demand to be listened to. If not you are out. It wasn't that democrats won last National election, the Republicans ethics where not to our standards and we through out those that didn't stand for Honesty and Christian values. If you check you will see that Pro-Life Republicans where not defeated we thinned the hurd of Pro-Choice Republicans. Where oh where is Judy? at a LCR meeting, now how much influience do you think she has.

Didn't the 1st and 2nd ward GOP Committeeman get married?
Living proof of Republican party in Illinois supports gay marriage

Wow, some great lines in that Family Taxpayers Network piece, like:

"How hypocritical that a group that preaches about the “Big Tent” turns on the President and the base when they don’t get their way on THEIR single issue."

How true.

What is the difference between RPN and the RYP?
Didn't one have a movie night with odd match ups as Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and Troy?

Dan L 12:18 AM

How sad.

@anon 10:32: Yes, let's look at the voting.

Where has the social right gotten us?
Answer: absolutely nowhere

You can be an active member of an inactive party all you want. The fact is, with all your 'keep walking' over the last decade, you've managed to essentially cripple the state level Republican party.

I consider for a moment the ever growing ethnic Mexican/Hispanic vote which has been identified, established, and summarily alienated all within the last 8 years courtesy of the value voters whom not only dislike dem homos but have a serious problem with dem mexycaaans too.

And then you sit here and tell us how proud you are, that candidates who actually want to win elections using practical and pragmatic policy that represents modern day values have been sent packing courtesy of you and jeebus. Meanwhile due to you (and I do mean the value voters, specifically) our state party doesn't have any stable of candidates with which to hope that there will be progress over the next 10 years, you've managed to let your desire for somebody preach the word of god get in the way of a perfectly viable election whilst simultaneously essentially handing over BamBam a free win, and in the state leg. we've got our choice between higher taxes and higher taxes.

But whooooooooeeeeee at least you didn't vote for no candidate in no gay pride parade!!!

And please, spare everyone the 'I'm a real conservative' yammer. You're not. Your perspective may be skewered but conservative /= value voter.

@anon 9:40: RYP? Republican Young Professionals? I'm pretty sure that's a Roeser outfit and I'm fairly sure that they don't exist.

They Gay Games was not a flop. They had a very modest shortfall which the made up in one fundraising event.

With Peraica, Skoien, Rich Gordon and Topinka all washed up, things are truly starting to look up for the GOP in Cook.
