My latest Tammy Duckworth e-mail

Jon Carson writes me,

Remember what this race is all about. Tammy is a leader who has dedicated her life to public service-and who is fighting to change the direction of this country. Her dedication to this country is so great that she chose to go to Iraq and after recovering from her injuries at Walter Reed, she decided to keep fighting for her country as a candidate for Congress.

Peter Roskam, on the other hand, is a personal injury lawyer and career politician who rose through the ranks following his party leaders and who will work to defend the status quo in Washington D.C. Or, to use the old adage that a picture can tell a thousand words, see his Yellowpages ad for his firm below. . .

Powerful and effective stuff...

...but when you get to the bottom line for this election, it's how do you feel about this Democrat as Speaker of the House. I wonder how her tangled ideas translate into Arabic?

I voted for Gore-Lieberman in 2000 because I couldn't stand Bush's jokes about his smarts. I worried how that would get translated throughout the world.

The results of Speaker Pelosi concern me the same way now... a lot more than Roskam.

I am uneducated about Nancy Pelosi. What is so scary about her??? I keep hearing she is this wack job California liberal. What is she so crazy for? Why be scared of her, even as speaker, she can't have a crazy liberal agenda with a republican president... Can someone please elaborate as to why she's so bad???

Bill Baar 6:23 AM

Ask Steny Hoyer (and Rahm Emanuel).

And Chris Matthews from a few days ago saying she's basically the issue.

Google around for some transcripts of her on the talk shows and judge her cohorencey for yourself.

Ok, that yellow pages ad is pretty hilarious!

Robbie...try educating yourself then, there's plenty of information out there about how looney she is...are you able to do that?

However, don't think Rahm won't find a way to knock her down, he's the Speaker we need.

Ok, I know how to use google and might get around to doing so. Sorry for assuming you might have some reasoning to back up your statements.

The reason I visit this blog is to get the opinions of the bloggers and the commenters. I can get the network news version anywhere, I was wanting to get an opinion from a fellow Illinoisian that actually gives a shit.

Bill Baar 8:29 AM

How do you feel on Rahm as speaker Robbie?

Skeeter 8:52 AM

You keep commenting about Cong. Pelosi.

What in particular has she said or done that has you so upset?

"Google her" doesn't cut it as an answer.

You keep posting about angry Democrats, but your own anger as Cong. Pelosi is strange at best when you can't identify a single statement by her that you find offensive.

Bill Baar 9:22 AM

I'm not angry with Pelosi Skeeter.

Rahm's co authored a book with a coherent Liberal-Progressive agenda.

Everytime I've watched Pelosi on TV she's seemed incoherent...rambling on and on...

I'm not angry and all with that... amused really... I'd hate to have someone who seems so muddled representing the Dems in Congress.

Rahm, on the otherhand, always seems perfectly together. I don't always agree with him; but together...

read his book.

Bill, I guess I would be fine with Rahm as speaker. Since he isn't my congressman, I am not real familiar on his stances on specific issues. He seems like a decent guy, but he also seems to spark controversy wherever he goes. I should probably read his book, but haven't yet.

Bill Baar 9:46 AM

I'd like to see Duckworth and Roskam debate Rahm's book.

I'd like that kind of substance.

Especially on the proposals to increast the force by 100k and ways to force more savings into 401ks...

..both things I would support.

I'm not sure where Duckworth or Roskam would be on Rahm's plans..

Skeeter 9:53 AM

Let me get this right Bill:

You are outraged that Cong. Pelosi might become Speaker, because on television she doesn't make a good appearance?

You don't want the Democrats to come to power in November because their leader, in your mind, doesn't rank with Denny "I have nothing to say" Hastert?

I thought she wanted to be Speaker of the House and not the CBS News Anchor.

And for someone who claims not to be angry, you sure do spend a lot of time writing about her.

Be honest, Bill. You don't want an Italian women giving people orders. You haven't come up with a single position of her's that would cause you such outrage, so what else is there?

Bill Baar 10:15 AM

I said it in the post Skeeter...I wouldn't want Pelosi for the same reason I didn't want Bush in 2000 (and voted for Gore-Lieberman instead): I was concerned how Bush's self-deprecating humor would translate to the rest of the world; I'm concerned how Pelosi's befuddlement will translate.

American politics are very tough for the rest of the world to understand. Hastert's done a good job... Rahm would do... maybe it's jut our midwestern clarity I think helps things out.

If Duckworth-Roskam persist in debating pictures instead of issues, Pelosi really becomes the sole criteria a voter can run with...

Bridget 11:18 AM

I would be proud to have Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker. I don't give a rat's ass how she comes off on Meet the Press. Her voting record is sound and principled.

I had the opportunity to meet with her a few months ago. I was very impressed, to say the least.

While I'm not a big fan of Rahm's tactics or poltics, I'd take him, too! Hell, give me ANYONE as long as it's a Dem!!!

I would really like to see a woman as the Speak, though. I think it would be KILLER to have one of the big brass balls black congresswomen as speaker - Sheila Jackson Lee would really impress me. Someone who will, without apologizing, tell it like it is!

Bill Baar 11:24 AM

I'm glad you agree she's an issue Bridget....

Progressives in SF don't share your enthusiasm but I don't think Rahm would go over well with them either...

I would like to see Duckworth and Roskam talk about the stuff in Rahm's book.

Here's the SF Bay Guardians non endorsement of Pelosi from The Nation

They're not upset 'cause she's Italian Skeeter, it's caused she's tacked right, which she has...sort of...but it just makes her look darn confused.....

NO ENDORSEMENT

If the Democrats retake the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi will almost certainly become the first female Speaker, and that's something noteworthy. (And she'd be a far better Speaker than the incumbent.) Pelosi, however, has tried so hard to promote her own career that she's ignored her constituents and become too much of a moderate Democrat, late in opposing the war, weak on same-sex marriage, and obsessed with raising money. She's also responsible for privatizing the Presidio. Whatever happens this year, she needs a challenger next time around.

Skeeter 12:26 PM

Baar:

You have still yet to cite a single issue where you differ from Cong. Pelosi.

So much for your great claims to be against a party of anger. You oppose a party simply because you don't like a person's personality. Seems pretty angry and irrational to me.

Skeeter 12:28 PM

By the way, Baar claims that Pelosi has issues with communication, but the following are the words of a man Baar prefers:

"One of the hardest parts of my job is to try to connect Iraq to the war on terror."

Pres. Bush, CBS Evening News, 9/6.

Anonymous,  3:43 PM

Um, Robbie...I said you should google her...thought maybe you'd want to educate yourself with something more concrete than a bloggers slanted (an inaccurate) position. Please let me know where I took a position and didn't back it up...think you have me confused with Barr.

But, if you wanna be spoon fed slanted information, by all means, rely on blogs.

I think both parties suck...but it's a sign how bad things are for republicans that democrats have no problem with Pelosi being Speaker.

We need Rahm now more than ever!!

Anonymous,  8:22 PM

Rahm has some good ideas in his book.

But he has no loyalty to his district, or this country, he is completely blind by ambition, is a pathological liar and has no ethics.

Rahm Emmanuel is a disgusting human being.

Bill Baar 12:02 PM

...so much for good ideas then...

maybe you should write a book anon?
