Laesch on impeachment, Iraq, and Iran

The Reader on Laesch. At least there's some clarity with Laesch.

Laesch would have Congress investigate the Bush case for war. “If that investigation shows that they misled the country or lied, then ‘impeachment’ should be the first word in everyone’s mouth.”

As for the current mess, he thinks we should recognize that the only thing Iraqis agree on is that they want our soldiers out, and we should negotiate a flexible timetable with their government for leaving.
And then on Iran.
The U.S. should be promoting regional disarmament instead of rattling nuclear sabers at Iran, he says, with the caveat that we do need to have a force nearby in case real trouble breaks out.
I'm not optimistic on dialogue with lets wipe the Israel off the map Ahmadinejad, so why Iraq, with an Iraqi Army as ally, isn't a good spot to keep a force should trouble break out, is something Laesch should explain.

That is why we should have never taken out Saddam...he was a natural check on Iran.

Iraq was mistake--we cannot turn it into a rose.

I agree with anon 7:16. The towel-heads all fought with each other and kept each other in check. Taking one out may have been satisfying to us in the short term, but immediately strengthened the ones that remained. Once you proceed down that path, you have to take them all out to achieve your result. As we have neither the military power or political will to invade and occupy every Israeli threat in the middle east, Iraq clearly was a mistake. A huge one.

But Laesch is an unstable idiot.

Bill Baar 8:11 AM

Many of the towel-heads are our allies now. I'm glad and proud of Americans for that.. many more in Iran want to be our allies too.

Here's Chicago Boyz commenting on two factors contributing to the growing popular support for the continuing our fight against reactionary Islam, alongside some proud Iraqis; noted in another post by Frank Warner... a guy who is my kind of liberal.

I suspect two factors may have entered our calculations: a) a sense that comes from the bad news that this is a fight that can be lost and b) a sense from the reaction to the Pope's speech that losing would be a very, very bad thing. Attacks on churches & the murder of a nun whose life has clearly been given to the service of others provide reality checks.

Bill Baar 8:13 AM

I won't vote for him, but the unstable idiot clearly and logically states where he stands.

You can't very well call Bush to account in this election if that's not clear.

crash-dev 8:58 AM

Ahmadinejad does not control the military (in Iran the President is not the Commander in Chief as it is in the US).

I agree with you that Laesch is clear about Iraq.
1) Whatever the elected government of Iraq wants from us we should do.

2) Bush and company made a case for war and executed a war plan that had some problems. So he argues for having Congress investigate to make sure that all the mistakes were honest mistakes. If they were not, then people should be fired.

I agree with both statements. On number 1, as an occupying country I think this is required to regain our authority in the world. The only way I would change it is if the military was asking for a different mission. On number 2, do I think it is a waste of resources to investigate the president? I believe this is one of the luxuries we as a nation have.

do I think it is a waste of resources to investigate the president? I believe this is one of the luxuries we as a nation have.

Crash-dev, it's not a luxury. If you read the Constitution you'll find Congress has oversight authority in its role as a check and a balance on the executive branch.

It's not a luxury, it's a responsibility.

The Republicans investigated a lie Clinton told about a cigar and spent many millions to do it.

Why won't the investigate an apparent lie told by the current president? What's different?

Bill Baar 10:59 AM

I'd argue Clinton's impeachment was a waste we couldn't afford...

Bill Baar 11:06 AM

...waste of time and focus when the US was in a dream world...

Skeeter 2:38 PM

Good point, Bill.

In hindsight, it does seem like a dream, doesn't it?

Peace, prosperity, and America standing tall in the world.

I can't believe it was only seven years ago. It seems much longer since we could actually look to our President for real leadership.

Bill Baar 3:52 PM

unless you had a sailor on the USS Cole...

or working for State in West Africa...

We should have seen this coming and done more. Almost everyone agrees to that Skeeter.

I remember Clinton's speech to the Joint Chiefs in Feb 1998.

I think he would have finished Saddam then but he got intimitated by the wag-the-dog stuff.

Skeeter 4:02 PM

Funny you would mention did The Cole.

When did that attack take place?

How many meetings did Mr. Bush hold regarding terrorism before 9/11?
What did he do with the guy who was responsible for hunting down terrorists?

Skeeter 7:17 PM

By the way -- you mention "wag the dog."

In fact, wasn't that Republican outraged that President Clinton was doing anything?

Keep voting Republican, Bill.
You get the government you deserve, and you don't deserve much.

Bill Baar 7:41 PM

Keep voting Republican, Bill.

Democrats aren't giving me a reason not too.

Skeeter 11:31 AM

Good call, Bill.

You would prefer the party that bungled into Iraq and that is pulling out of the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

We have seven times as many troops in Iraq fighting people who originally were not terrorists as we do in Afghanistan trying to defeat the same people that attacked the U.S. on 9/11/01.

You get the government you deserve.

Anonymous,  4:53 PM

Bill,

Re-read your history books (not the Bush spinning re-write of history).

Clinton spent more money and more time hunting bin Laden than Bush has. It was conservatives (the people you support) who kept yapping "Wag the Dog".

The intern thing distracted the Republicans more than it did Clinton.

In fact, Bush recently closed down the intelligence group charged with finding bin Laden.

Why do you support this nonsense?

Skeeter's right -- you get the government you deserve. Problem is I don't vote for these people because they endanger my great country, but I'm still stuck with them thanks to people who refuse to let the scales fall off their eyes.

The Republicans have been politicizing national security for well over a decade and with the recently leaked NIE report indicating terrorism is worse and more Muslim have been radicalized against America now than before 9/11 it's clear the Republican overly partisan approach is having disastrous long-term effects.

Bill Baar 5:29 PM

NW,

Why don't you list some of the books you've been reading?
