Children's Museum Move Will Cost Taxpayers Millions

Gregory Meyer at Crain's reports this weekend that the Chicago Children's Museum move will cost taxpayers millions, or at the very least divert funding from Chicago's marquee museums like the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institute, and Shedd Aquarium.

Ironically, the DuSable Museum of African American History and National Museum of Mexican Art are also likely to lose out. I wonder how Chicago's black and Latino Aldermen are going to feel about that?

Under a Chicago Park District subsidy to museums located in parks and funded by property taxpayers, the Children's Museum hopes to receive taxpayer subsidies from a fund overseen by Museums in the Park. 10 museums split nearly $34 million this year. If the Children's Museum move goes forward, either those museums will see a smaller slice of revenue or taxpayers will be forced to kick in more.

Shocking!!! great information. thanks for pointing this out. Does anyone know what the Millennium Tax is? if you buy a condo in the 42nd ward, you are assessed this special tax of 1% of the total market value of your property. This turned me off completely. Any information about what this is would be interesting. What is it used for?

Good question. I recommend e-mailing it to Ben Joravsky - joravben at aol dot com.

Ben writes on property tax issues for the Chicago Reader and probably knows more about Cook County property taxes than the Assessor does.

Anyone who doesn't read Joravsky every week is missing out.

Seems to me like Ms. Pritzker could well afford to fund the entire Children's Museum herself without asking the poor people in Chicago to contribute a penny. Why are poor people in Chicago even paying for this "museum" in the first place?

If you care the least bit about poor taxpayers that's the first question you ask before pretending to care about the taxpayers while pointing out that Chicago museums get more than 10 TIMES the amount of money that CTA gets from Chicago taxes.

Hmmmm, Chicago Democrats think these museums are a higher priority than the CTA. Brilliant.

According to today's Chicago Tribune, Gery Chico [Daley's new guy for the parks] has suggested that the problem may be solved with a tax increase.

This is another Daley family member making money off the taxpayers backs.
He is doing this for his other nephew the lawyer (not the one making hundreds of millions on risky land deals tied to the Olympics isn't that what the New York and Chicago Mob went to jail over with the Teamsters Pensions with Tony Pro Provenzano, Fat Tony Salerno, Joey Lombardo, Dorfman, LaPietra--PENSIONS)
and a favor to the super rich oligarch Billionaire Hyatt family Pritzkers and their baby the Childrens Museum.

Put the Childrens Museum in La Villita (little Village) or Englewood.

Daley is the racist hypocrite.
His family and friends are raping the taxpayers and robbing them blind.
