"I still have a name. You're Public Official A."

Forget Church tomorrow, this sounds way to good to miss!

Gov. Blagojevich and Republican challenger Judy Baar Topinka fought their first bout of face-to-face verbal combat Friday, battling over everything from ethics to vision in a contentious hour of finger-pointing, chest-thumping and name-calling.

"You have the most investigated administration in the history of the state of Illinois -- the most investigated," Topinka told the governor. "I still have a name. You're Public Official A."
It's Dick Kay's farewll show. What a great way to leave the business.
The hourlong debate between Gov. Blagojevich and Republican rival Judy Baar Topinka airs at 9 a.m. Sunday and again at 11 a.m. Monday on "City Desk" on WMAQ-Channel 5. It is the final episode of the show to be hosted by retiring NBC5 political editor Dick Kay.

People aren’t buying the, Rod’s a corrupt politician and I’m not, story. The voters aren’t dumb.

She should also stay away from the public official A thing. The U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago has yet to close the book on the 2003 investigation of treasurer’s staff being used for political work. Remember: State Board of Elections, treasurer’s office staff, petitions filed by Libertarians, something like that.

She still has a name, good one. What would be a good name for her buddy Karl Rove, these days?

What a hypocrite. Her people need to shut her up.

The Governor just completed a month-long series of negative advertising, and it's Topinka that should shut up?

Public Official "A" will be repeated so many times in the next 5-6 months that the Governor may want to have his name legally changed to "A" on the ballot.

You're right, that's her problem, as far as I'm concerned. The people have heard "official A" for the last 17 months, that's all they hear. Does she have anything else? Ideas, funding plans, a thought, perhaps?

Anything that she throws at him, he can throw right back.

She comes across as a smart-ass, not Gubernatorial materia.

Judy is a smart-ass, but you don't think anybody who runs against an incumbent isn't a smart-ass? Remember John Kerry? He came off as a smart-ass simply because of the way you have to attack an incumbent to win an election. It happens, who cares? The fact that there are still people out there defending our socialist moron of a governor makes me a little sick. His policies are driving away business. He has single-handedly turned pharmacies into entities of the state. He has no backbone, no core. He just cares about being elected, and probably doesn't even know what "governing" means. If he does know what it means, he would be in Springfield, you know, the state capital. Instead, the taxpayers of Illinois foot the bill to heat the driveway of the mansion that nobody lives in. I know a lot of people out there don't really care for Judy that much. She might not be the best governor. But she certainly wouldn't be the worst governor. Rod has set the bar too high....

Rod is corrupt and needs to go
BUT Judy is nothing great

Topinka is using "State Treasurer's Office staff" to promote her NAME at state facilities (Prisons) to promote her name during day shift ours throughout the state. Her office is attempting to blend in under the "umbrella" of promoting her office during the State Employees Benefit Choice Period. What reason or Why would the State Treasurers Office have a representative "on grounds at state facilities" during Health Care Forums for employees; the Benefit Choice Period is a time when "state employees" choose their Health Care Providers for the year, ie. OSF, Health Alliance, etc. Her, Ms. Topinka, has a representative at these functions with Brochures showing her picture with Campaign style colors with her name in Brigt Bold "capital" lettering. I believe this could be considered unethical and/or inappropriate behavior and is bordering "Campaigning on State Premises." I have never seen a representative from the Treasurer's Office at a Benefits Choice Period function until this year (when the state treasurer is running for Governor). This behavior/conduct does not pass the smell test!

And when I drive through the tolls I have to read: "I-PASS courtesy of ROD BLAGOJEVICH." So he is using state funds to campaign??? I don't think so, but according to you it would be. But when we talk about state employees working on the clock for politics, it happens all of the time. I don't think it happens at the direction of Judy Baar or Jesse White or Rod Blagojevich, it happens because people get board and start doing political stuff. Sometimes it happens without people even thinking about it. But I will tell you this, the SOS office is full of this. Right or wrong, Illinois is full of this type of thing. AndI for one, don't really care... Maybe the legislature should come up with some sham reform that they are so known for....

Hey Lovie-

You’re always good for a sarcastic comment about Blagojevich defenders.

Does it make you feel good defending Judy? Doesn’t it make you a little sick to your stomach?

Anonymous,  1:10 PM

"People get board and start doing political stuff?????"
You are "mixing Apples with Oranges!" I said A staffer from the State Treasurer's Office is going to Prison's for the Purpose of "putting her name out there." If the State Treasurer is Legitimate, there Will be a "LOG" showing that she has been at or sent representatives from her office to Benefits Choice Periods for HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS for "state employees" in the past (go back however far you want). That is a "Slick, and devious attempt to campaign while on the "CLOCK!" It Happened! As a matter of fact, if any campaign would have a legitimate stock in being at a Benefits Choice Period for State Employees it would have been a branch of the "All Kids Covered Program." Why? Because it is Health Care related. What does the Treasurer's office have to do with Health Care? Nothing!

Anon 9:50, according to your logic, Judy should keep it up. If she really has these skeltons, they will hurt her more than Rod. Rod should be out there saying 'bring it on'!

Anon 1:10, you sound like a real campaign insider. What a great strategy for Judy--trying to nail down the prison vote! If this were indeed true, Rod would be napping peacefully in Chicago.

This makes about as much sense as Rod paying off Meeks to stay out of the governor's race and claiming Meeks would really hurt Judy more than Rod.

Doesn't pass the smell or common sense test.

You are right, whichever democrat anonymous you are, defending Judy does make me feel a little sick.... But if she is corrupt, she is not as corrupt as Blago... and if she becomes our governor, she won't be as bad of a governor as Blago.... I wonder if these democrat anonymous people are posting from their SOS offices???...........

Anonymous,  6:59 PM

Judy is not that bright
either is Blago
Blago is very corrupt and a hypocrite
Judy is not as much of a hypocrite and not nearly as corrupt
We are voting for Judy
it is the lesser of two evils

Anonymous,  7:00 PM

I happened to grab some of the "brochures" while I was @ work; and furthermore, I did send them to the Blagojevich campaign office in Chicago. The brochures may be "legit." I don't know. Nonetheless, as a loyal Democrat, I thought I would let the campaign know what Ms. Topinka's people are up to. What the Blagojevich people do with the information, that is up to them. But they have the literature her people are handing out on state facilities like a County Fair ground.

Anonymous 1:45 PM just in case you aren't aware, prisoners can't vote, it would be the staff that they are talking to. Just wanted to clarify that one.

Anonymous,  4:32 AM

Prisoners can't vote? Remember, we are in Illinois... prisoners are welcome to vote via the city machine....

Anonymous,  2:18 PM

WOW, do you think Judy struck a nerve on City Desk? She went after him like a pit bull, and he deserved every bit of it. Now every Blago supporter is frantic in trying to smear her up.

I love what I see. Those smug Blago types running scared. Real scared.

Anonymous,  3:15 PM

With Blago Judy (who is nothing great) has it right, it is a matter of when and not if he will get indicted. Resko and Kelly are real sleazes

Anonymous,  3:20 PM

You have got to be kidding me. Scared? She looked pathetic, absolutely shallow, without ideas. A COMPLETE hypocrite. Like Dick said, “you’re running for Governor, don’t you have some kind of plan.”

How about the 100,000 jobs she created? She looked foolish.

What Judy unloaded on Dick’s show is her whole arsenal. There is no more. Her education-funding plan has to be one of three things: tax increase, cuts to services, or something creative, like Rod proposed. I wonder which it will be.

You can call me scared, partisan, naïve, whatever, but she had better come up with something if she wants to win. Read Mark Brown’s article in today’s Sun-Times. She is in need of a plan!

P.S. Edwin was counting on an indictment, too. Don't hold your breath.

Anonymous,  4:08 PM

That sounded a little bit scared to me.

Anonymous,  4:27 PM

Did I get this straight from today's Sun-Times? Am I dreaming?

The Blagojevich Administration will NOT release the Goldman Sachs reprot they have been touting on the lottery lease? Now they call it a "draft"?????

These clowns want us to trust them on a $10 billion deal without releasing the report, and even that is a "draft"?

TRUST THE BLAGOJEVICH ADMINISTRATION?!?!?!??

Heck, even the Democratic leaders in the legislature make these guys sign Memorandums of Understanding on everything these days, but now we are to simply trust them with the biggest gamble in generations.

THESE PEOPLE ARE A JOKE. A very bad joke, at that.

Wait until the next poll. Topinka will be down a few more points.

She came across horribly in that debate. She's like an old nagging grandma. Just bitter about everything.

She's for nothing, only against. And even if she had a plan, it's pretty obvious she wouldn't be able to talk about it intelligently.

The ILGOP just keeps screwing up. This November will be the biggest disaster yet for the Illinois GOP, and it will all be self inflicted.

Anonymous,  1:38 PM

Judy did better in the debate but that does not mean she is not an intellectual liteweight. Judy Bar Topinka does lack a vision and a plan. But everyone hates Rod so much and Rod has no credibility even on the good parts of his plan because he is a sociopathic liar.

Anonymous,  9:22 PM

The majority of commenters here state that Judy has no plan, no vision. Well, we've had almost 4 years of nothing but plans, visions and "iniatives" from our illustrious governor, without any firm plans to pay for it all. It's a new program every week, "AllKids," "Famiy Care," and so on and so on.

While I think this election will be a vote between the lesser of two evils, I also think that a plan a week for the taxpayers of Illinois sounds like the "Flim-Flam Man" to me. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. And all these plans leave our children and grand-children with the bill. Are we that easily fooled?

Anonymous,  10:35 PM

What do you think Judy would say if she was asked "Are you the 'Gay Governor?'"

Anonymous,  10:27 AM

Only a Blago campaign staffer could say he did well in that discussion. Most of the way, he was back on his heels, counter-punching. He only got into his schtick on one or two occassions. And with Blago, its all about the schtick.

Judy was a mixed result, to me. She looked great in ripping into Blago for his faults, which a lot of Illinoisans want to see, and showed a new confidence that was not there during the primary. She did not handle the 100,000 job thing that well, because it sounds suspect from the start, and she needs to revisit her game on gun control. (Hey Judy, here's a hint: the "guns in Englewood" come from inadequate enforcement of current law, so how is a new law going to change that? Seems to me that would point up a big difference between you and Blago: he want the flashy headline of a "ban" that is toothless, you want to concentate on results.) She does not have enough initiatives on the table, but she can easily fix that in the coming months.
