-- OUTSTANDING: Positive word for GM, American cars - Jerry Lundby, Carol Stream
http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=222799&src=
(THE LETTER: Reports on TV and in the press in recent days do not bode well for the future of General Motors. I offer a more positive note for General Motors and American-made cars in general. I first learned to drive a Model T Ford at age ten on the prairies of North Dakota. Out of loyalty to American workers and to American-made products, in my 84 years I have never purchased a foreign brand car. My most recent purchase in 2003 was a six-cylinder Buick Century with 42,000 miles on it. I have since added over 40,000 more miles in travels around the country. On a recent trip to Connecticut we carefully measured the miles per gallon and was pleased that we got 33.8 miles per gallon on the highway. In the print media and on TV I see dealers of newer foreign made cars boasting of 29 to 31 miles per gallon. My present Buick with its 80,000-plus miles is getting better miles per gallon on the highway. If we are concerned about preserving a manufacturing base which must be there for the future security of America and are concerned that working class Americans can continue to have a sustainable standard of living then perhaps more of us need to take these issues into consideration when we purchase our next automobile. Cheaper is not necessarily better.)

PIONEER LOCAL
-- DuPage Democrats hope to turn tide in their favor - Jim Jaworski
http://www.pioneerlocal.com/clarendonhills/news/1071107,em-WEBbluefest-072308-s1.article
(THE ARTICLE: In DuPage County, Democratic candidates are hoping to scoop up a few seats in the November election. Democrats held their first Blue Fest at Arabian Knights farm in Willowbrook Saturday, and local candidates, many running for the first time, hoped to use the event to drum up support in a county that does not have a single Democrat serving on the County Board. All, of course, express optimism about their chances, with many pointing to the February primary, when 23,000 more people voted on a Democratic ballot than a Republican one. Rifat Sivisoglu, a business professor at Elmhurst College, is running for a District 1 seat on the County Board, which includes a portion of Elmhurst. He said he recognizes the difficulties in running against an incumbency that has complete control of the board, but he said he hopes to use that as an advantage. "It's been a long time since civics class, but I thought there was supposed to be a choice," he said. "There is a reason we have a government in place and not a dictatorship. They have a monopoly government." Gary Nowak, an Elmhurst banker running for state Representative in the 46th District, said the national tide is clearly in the Democrats' favor. He likes to talk about national issues as well as local issues. "A lot of the larger solutions start in the state legislature," he said. All of the Democratic candidates insist this is their year. Republicans do not seem very concerned. State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-24, said the county will stay strongly conservative in November. "I think voters in DuPage look to the east and see a Todd Stroger type of government is not what they want in Wheaton," he said Monday. As for the increased Democratic ballots in February, Dillard said the primary was an aberration. The last presidential election in 2004 showed 22,000 more Republican voters in the county and 11,000 fewer Democrats, he said. "(The 2008 primary) was a phenomenon, with a Republican primary that was basically over and a favored son running on the Democrat's side," he said. "That does not translate in a general election.")
