John Kass Still Owes an Apology

John Kass apologized yesterday for comparing Hillary to C.S. Lewis's "The White Witch", but still thinks its okay to compare to compare U.S. Senator Barack Obama to this guy:

That's Mr. Tumnus, the satyr, from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Not surprisingly, Kass's comparison drew this comment (#173) from one of his supporters:

" This Monkey will never be Prez-O-Dent" - Chi-Town, Excelsior, MN

Way to go, Kass. Nice company you keep.

BTW, New Hampshire was one of the last states in the country to recognize Martin Luther King Day, in 1999.

Way to go, Hillary. Nice company you keep.

So if I said "Commenter #173 on Kass's board is SPOT ON" on this blog, it would be fait for Kass to say "Nice company you keep over there, Yellow!"?

Geez Yello, your hubris is usually far more though out than this. I want to read someone turning a molehill into a mountain, I'll go read Zorn.

>Way to go, Hillary. Nice company you >keep.

So Hillary Clinton is racist (or should be chided for her "company") because the state that narrowly preferred her over a black candidate has a spotted history of race relations? Are you implying that the only reason she won is because she won the racist New Hampshritie vote?

What is it that makes people lose all capacity for rational thought?

Please tell me this is a joke, YDD.

Are you really suggesting that Mr. Tumnus is some sort of negative archetype for African Americans?

Are you really suggesting that Hillary should have....what? Skipped New Hampshire in protest? Reprimanded them for being racists?

If Obama's nomination is going to lead to 10 months of ridiculous charges of racism like this, then I think there's an arguement to be made that it would do more harm than good to race relations in this country.

Besides, the analogy is right on.

Obama is going around promising to make everything right by spending
rich people's money.

And people actually believe that?
From a politician who comes from Illinois, the home of government
corruption.

It's middle class, not rich people's money he'll be spending..
us regular folk.

Please fill us in on Obama's big spending plans, and how that differs from Clinton's.

And I don't think the charges of racism are that ridiculous. Clinton has served in public office for 7 years, John Edwards served for six years. Neither has accomplished much.

Yet Obama, with 10 years in public office and a long and successful legislative track record, is the one who is being labeled as "unqualified". Please explain THAT to me. If its not because of race, than why else?

And my comment about Hillary Clinton was mostly tongue in cheek. I just think its relevant to understand New Hampshire's attitudes on race to understand the outcome of this particular primary.

And I'm not the only white guy saying it either.

grand old partisan 12:56 PM

First off, I’ve re-read Kass’s column a dozen times now, and I don’t see the word “unqualified” in there anyway. His commentary is about the tone of their campaigns, not their qualifications for office.

But even ignoring that, I am also still completely lost when it comes to finding the racial context of the comparison.

So, yes, YDD, it is ridiculous. It’s ridiculous to suggest that Kass’s labeling of Obama as the gentle faun to Clinton’s White Witch invites, and is responsible for, ugly comments like #173.

You would be hard pressed to find a more leftist commenter or contributor on this site than me, but YDD, this is absurd.

As for the qualifications, I'll leave that for candidate partisans to duke out. I think the likely point of contention would be the definition of "experience," and whether legislative is the only definition. But not my concern.

But to even make a racist broadside against Hillary or her supporters because of NH's recognition of MLK Day is really unfair. So what about the 37% that went to Mr Obama? They were the non-racist NHers, and the 39% were the racist ones? If Barack had won, would you be saying, "Phew, he pulled one out despite all the racism!"

Be fair. Hillary's squeaker in NH is no more attributable to "racism" than Barack's win in Iowa is attributable to sexism.

I have two. Obama wants to nationalize the Automotive Industry pensions in exchange for more hybrid cars being manufatured. He also wants to mandate equal pay based on gender ACROSS professions.

Brilliant economics from the guy from U of C.

I thought the Kass article was great.

I think Kass is having a difficult time with the new smoking policy, I think he's on methodone...BTW I am going to vote for Billy Jack AKA Tom Laughlin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwCZt6jEnJg

Sorry, you are so far off. ;) There's a difference between a satyr and a faun in Narnian lore. A satyr is a goat that stands like a man, a faun, which is what Mr. Tumnus is, is a man with goat legs and horns.

This is Mr. Tumnus.
