GOPUSA ILLINOIS Daily Clips - March 31, 2008

DIERSEN: Beyond tragically, Illinois newspapers and television stations do everything they can to elect and to reelect Democrats. If in 2003 and 2004 they had trumpeted Obama's affirmation of Wright's hate speech instead of trumpeting Jack Ryan's former wife's charges, not only would Obama not be a presidential candidate now, he would have lost the 2004 U.S. Senate primary. If in 2007 and 2008 they had trumpeted Bill Foster's former wife's charges, not only would Foster not be a congressman now, he would have lost the 2008 congressional primaries.

Gov replies -- but he never answers

Carol Marin talks about the governor this morning in her Sun-Times column. In this story it starts off with the Governor attempting to have a press conference talking home mortgage relief. This was supposed to be about this "positive" story but the reporters who were there had other ideas. There were questions not about home mortgage relief but Tony Rezko.

Rogers kicked off the questioning: Governor, did that conversation happen?

Blago: “Let me answer that question with an answer. I’m not a party in that trial. I’m not following the trial. It would be inappropriate of me to comment on a trial I’m not a part in.”

Rogers tried again: Don’t the people of Illinois deserve to know whether or not those allegedly incriminating conversations took place with Stuart Levine, a person who has pled guilty to a variety of federal charges?

Blago: “I already answered your question. Those characterizations do not characterize how I operate.”

Rich Samuels of WTTW: Did Blagojevich have a conversation on an airplane with Stuart Levine?

Blago: “You know it’s a good question. I’m not a party in that trial. I’m not in a place where I think it’s appropriate to comment on a trial I’m not involved in.”

Then Carlos Hernandez-Gomez of CLTV: Was the governor’s chief of staff Lon Monk clearing decisions through Tony Rezko as Levine has testified?

Blago (taking a noisy sip of water): “Let me answer that question. I’m not a party to that trial.”

Then Phil Rogers once again: What was the governor’s relationship to Tony Rezko and Stuart Levine?

Blago (another noisy sip of water, his eyes peering over the paper cup):

“Look I’ve asked and answered that a million times. You just ought to go back and take a look at your clippings.”
I'd like to have seen that press conference. It's not wonder he's in his "bunker". He don't want to take questions about this case. I don't blame him, but there are some legitimate questions he's avoiding. Surely he can't avoid them forever, but he certainly can's assume that things are all hokey dorey. Marin continues...
All they show us is that since the feds began showering the Blagojevich’s administration with subpoenas three years ago for everything from state hiring practices, to how lucrative pension investment contracts were handed out and to whom, to the governor and his wife’s personal finances, there isn’t a single answer on a single one of those clippings that provides citizens of this state with a clear answer to any question about his conduct or his relationships.

And if the governor is referring to video clips of past news conferences, all you’ll see, time and again, is the governor running for the door. Literally.

So, budding crisis managers, the lesson here is don’t call a news conference unless you can say something that doesn’t insult the intelligence of the public.
If you were reading this column. I tried not to give too much away almost reads like a lesson for both aspiring crisis managaers and aspiring journalists. The lesson for aspiring journalist and I will include in that description citizen journalists is to never stop asking questions.

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
-- Why aren't Illinois Republican organizations and candidates issuing more press releases? - Dave Diersen
www.gopillinois.com
(THE ARTICLE: Why aren't the Illinois Republican Party (IRP), the Illinois House and Senate Republican organizations, the IRP Congressional District organizations, the Illinois Republican County Chairman's Association (IRCCA), the Republican county party organizations, the Republican township party organizations, the Republican Chicago ward organizations, the allied Republican organizations, and Republican candidates issuing more press releases? While the Democrat Party controlled Illinois news media routinely ignores such press releases, GOPUSA ILLINOIS would be more than happy to include them in its daily emails. Obvious topics for press releases include events such as the June 6/7 IRP quadrennial convention in Decatur, IRP State Central Committee meetings, IRP Congressional District meetings, IRCCA meetings, county party meetings, township party meetings, allied organization meetings, candidate rallies, and major fundraisers. Other topics could include actions taken to thank voters individually who cast Republican ballots in the February 5 primary election.)

Aldermen lash out at $75,000 for Stone

From today's Sun-Times...

Chicago aldermen ridiculed and condemned a federal hiring monitor on Friday for awarding $75,000 to the son of the City Council's elder statesman as compensation for a 2003 aldermanic election that was stacked against him.

Federal monitor Noelle Brennan believed Stone's claim that he didn't stand a chance against then-Ald. Ted Matlak (32nd) because Matlak had the support of a political army of city workers commanded on city time by now-convicted former First Deputy Water Commissioner Donald Tomczak.

Veteran aldermen begged to differ. They argued that Stone "never stood a chance, period" because he was a lousy candidate.

By giving Stone $75,000, Brennan deprived more worthy applicants of more substantial settlements, the aldermen said. "We've got potholes to fix. We spend $20 million on snow removal, and the federal monitor decides in her infinite wisdom to give somebody $75,000 because they lost an election? Can I sign up for that program?" said Ald. Tom Allen (38th).
Has Jay Stone ever worked for the city? Should he get a settlement from the city only because he had to face a ward political machine mostly manned by city workers? And why aren't the aldermen trying to go after the corruption that is a cause & effect of rigging city hiring?

I haven't read that Mr. Stone ever worked for the city. Stone surely should not have gotten a settlement for only being a political candidate facing a political machine of city workers. Hopefully someone can provide an answer for the third question I posed, because the best I can do is that the aldermen on Chicago's city council aren't willing to tackle this issue.

Many of the aldermen are correct in opposing this. Indeed a lot of Aldermen are correct that this money could go towards providing services to Chicago residents. Still if the city is tired of these payouts, I wish they could address the underlying causes.

Lights Out

On Saturday, March 29, turn out your lights to show your support and commitment toward taking action to combat climate change. Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and this year cities across the globe, such as Tel Aviv, Bangkok and Copenhagen, are taking action. The City of Chicago is partnering with World Wildlife Fund as the U.S. flagship city for Earth Hour.

This year's effort has been receiving a tremendous amount of press, so it should be interesting to see how the response turns out to be. I was thinking about live-blogging the event, but it seemed kind of paradoxical (not to mention boring).

So tonight, grab a candle and a book and relax old-school style (really old-school).

When: Saturday, March 29

Time: 8:00p.m. - 9:00p.m.

What: Turn out your lights in support of taking actions to combat climate change

Who: You

Capital debate in the Capitol

Gov. Rod Blagojevich is expected to host a series of leaders’ meetings at the executive mansion in Springfield starting April 10, according to a letter from former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard. The March 25th letter is addressed to all four top legislative leaders.

Republican Hastert and Democrat Poshard are co-chairing the governor’s coalition to promote his $25 billion capital program, called Illinois Works, and it seems as though they could serve as a much-needed buffer between the governor and the legislative leaders in what’s sure to be a contentious debate about financing the plan.

It’s hard to get excited about that debate. It seems as though Statehouse insiders still feel hung over from last year’s political stalemate, turmoil, disgrace — whatever you want to call it. The situation begs the question of how today’s capital debate differs from 1999, when then-Gov. George Ryan worked with the legislature to approve the last major capital plan in Illinois. That same year, they earmarked 51 percent of the state’s general funds for education and rewrote the state’s gaming law to allow a docked casino in Cook County.

Why could leaders of opposing political parties accomplish all that when today’s Democratically controlled legislature and executive branch have a hard time even meeting in the same room? Personalities, for one. Republican and former Sen. James “Pate” Phillip led the Senate in 1999. The current House Speaker, Michael Madigan, controlled the House then, too. But Madigan and Blagojevich drastically differ in personalities and leadership styles (see our March cover story). It also should be noted that the context of the 1999 debate was a much better economy with higher-than-expected revenues. Today’s revenue picture is much gloomier.

But Ryan himself was quoted as saying in Illinois Issues magazine that working with the legislature was the key. “That’s what government’s about, sitting down to negotiate your differences,” he said in our own Charlie Wheeler column in 1999. “I worked hard for people to cooperate, to make sure we got done what had to be done.”

Stay tuned next week when the legislature will spring back into action after a two-week break. The Capital Development Board will testify about a capital bill during a House committee at the same time Rep. Jack Franks, a Woodstock Democrat, is scheduled to hold a hearing about the governor's $1 million promise to the private Loop Lab School.

Report Highlights Lisa Madigan's Work

A new report by the Center for Justice & Democracy champions some of our country’s most important public advocates, the state Attorneys General (AGs). The study focuses on the state AG’s role in targeting corrupt and harmful business practices on behalf of state consumers. Our very own Lisa Madigan and her involvement in several federal lawsuits are highlighted. We at Illinois Deserves the Truth have applauded many actions her office has taken to protect Illinoisans and hold wrongdoers accountable.

The study mentions a number of recent settlements in which Madigan was involved, including those against pharmaceutical companies Purdue Pharma and Organon USA Inc., the selling of defective defibrillators by Boston Scientific Corp., and her work to combat tobacco companies’ misleading business practices.

CJ&D Executive Director, Joanne Doroshow, said,

"We tend to take for granted the important and sometimes understated work of state Attorneys General."
Madigan’s work isn't just undervalued, though. State AGs across the country are under attack by corporate special interests.
“A stealth corporate campaign is underway to keep them from accomplishing their job, both by treating with contempt their pro-consumer cases and by attacking their use of outside counsel, which AG's seek out to better protect consumers while saving taxpayers money. If these business groups are successful and prevent AGas from doing their job, the difference could means hundreds of millions of lost reimbursements for states due to corporate wrongdoing, not to mention countless lives."
This study just reminds us of the importance of public advocates like Madigan. State AGs and the private counsel helping them do all Illinoisans a service by exposing corporate wrongdoing.

You can find a copy of the report here.

Time to revisit hate crimes debate

Earlier this week we learned that the Governor’s Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes is currently member-less and inactive. What a pity, since another story from this week makes it clear that someone needs to re-examine the issue of hate crimes and make some sense out of it:

A St. Charles East High School student was in a Kane County courtroom Tuesday, accused of scrawling a racial epithet in his former girlfriend's locker in what his attorney called a teenage spat gone awry.

The 14-year-old boy, who is white, also is charged with creating an Internet image of a black man being lynched and sharing it with other students in the computer lab at St. Charles East.

The boy is facing felony charges that could put him in prison until he is 21.

What really blows my mind about this episode is that the school is planning to “design an education program to emphasize racial tolerance and understanding.” Forget, for a moment, that this boy was, presumably, racially tolerant and understanding enough to be in an inter-racial relationship in the first place. But consider the cognitive dissonance of expecting that he should know better (as the stiff punishment he now faces implies), while recognizing that there is a need to educate the rest of his classmates about this.

Seems to me that we are either holding him to a different standard, or the school is wasting time addressing an issue his classmates should also already be expected to understand.

Advocates, Sen. Steans Jolt Liquor Biz's Caffeine-Spiked Alcohol Drinks; Push Clear, Detailed Alcohol Content Warning Labels

(Chicago, IL) -- Advocates from the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association (IADDA) and State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) pushed their plan at a press conference this week to slap clear, detailed alcohol warning labels on the liquor industry's newest marketing invention to seduce teens into an early, boozy lifestyle--alcoholic energy drinks--like Sparks, Tilt, and Bud Extra.

Sparks, Tilt, Bud Extra? Sound unfamiliar?

They should--unless you're under 21 and hanging out in MySpace.Com, Facebook and the other kiddie social networking Web sites. That's where the liquor companies are plugging both their non-alcoholic energy drinks and their booze-addled cousins in virtually indistinguishable containers.

These hip, happenin', color-streaked containers and their itzy-bitzy, microscopic warning labels fool convenience store clerks, cops, and parents alike. Of course, which is the point.

Steans' legislation, SB 2472, proscribes the size, placement, etc. of alcohol content warning labels. The Senate Executive Committee approved the measure, 9-2, on March 12, but Steans is holding the bill on 2nd reading, because, of course, the deep-pocketed liquor companies have their knickers in a knot. They fear--expense. Egads.

But Steans and the advocates have a powerful ally--Illinois Attorney Lisa Madigan. A few weeks ago, Madigan stuck her neck out and told the Springfield State Journal-Register that the alcoholic energy drinks should be banned altogether. Kapow!

State Sens. Mattie Hunter, Maggie Crotty, Lou Viverito, Christine Radogno, Jacqueline Collins, Susan Garrett and Iris Martinez have joined as legislative co-sponsors. And had he wanted, State Senate President Emil Jones (D-Chicago) could have rubbed out the bill. He didn't.

Where the Sun Don't Shine

So here I was, all ready to give the CTA kudos for a good green initiative - and they had to shoot themselves in their mass transit foot.

First, the good news. The CTA had the foresight to purchase a new Big Belly Solar Compactor. According to the BigBelly website, the new high-tech trash can is a:
“compacting trash receptacle that is completely self-powered. Instead of requiring a grid connection, BigBelly uses solar power for 100% of its energy needs. The unit takes up as much space as the "footprint" of an ordinary receptacle—but its capacity is five times greater. Increased capacity reduces collection trips and can cut fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. BigBelly also provides cost efficiencies from labor savings, fuel cost and maintenance savings, as well as environmental benefits from reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Safe, easy to use, and designed to keep out pests, the BigBelly has already proven its worth in urban streets, parks, colleges, arenas—and in all weather conditions.”
So far, so good, right? A spiffy-looking trash can, with a big fat solar panel on top, that will help keep stations cleaner and be environmentally friendly at the same time.

What could be wrong with that?

Well nothing, except for the fact that this solar-powered uber-trash can is located
at the underground Red Line State/Lake subway station.

Sure, the Lake street station has been spiffed up, with more fluorescent lighting added in recent months, but someone should tell the CTA that the sun don’t shine 30 feet under the intersection of State and Lake.

Big Belly can, of course, be plugged in for indoor use.

A throwback - Trib buys the Chicago Cubs

So far they haven't posted this vid on YouTube yet, but I just want to share this. FuzzyMemories had video from 1981 discussing the sale of the Chicago Cube to the Tribune Company. Appropriate to look at this history as in 2008 the Cubs are on the auction block. Also we're looking at whether or not the Cubs might have to play at US Cellular Field whenever Wrigley Field is sold to the state and renovated. Oh and I should also add that the new Tribune owner, Sam Zell, is floating the idea of selling naming rights for Wrigely Field.

And after the Cubs story apparently the Chicago Public Schools had money problems and this wouldn't allow for the schools to open on time. Well don't ask me what happened with that history I have no idea. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Beyond that story there's the US selling arms to China. President Reagan goes after the Democratic Congress for attempting to undercut his economic program. And they show video of his press conference where he discusses possibly running for re-election. They also mentioned the assasination attempt in addition to news about Reagan's press secretary James Brady who was shot in this episode. The Reagan White House said they wouldn't issue anymore bulletins about Brady. They also teased a story about John Cardinal Cody being in the hospital and flooding in Northwest Indiana and the south suburbs.

Vacant lots employ no one

The former Dominick's grocery store on the left employs no one. Just as the vacant lot at 83rd and Stewart on Chicago's South Side doesn't have anyone on its payroll.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest corporation, wants to build a store at 83rd and Stewart, and help revitalize an area that has few if any large grocery stores--a "food desert."

And some people want to keep it that way.

The Chicago Tribune, free registration may be required for the link, has an editorial today that about that lot. It's part of the Chatham Market redevelopment plan, and a clause in that plan calls for Chicago City Council approval for any store selling groceries with over 100,000 square feet. Two years ago, the council passed an ordinance, which was vetoed by Mayor Richard Daley, that would've forced any store with over 100,000 square feet of retail space, a "Big Box," to pay its workers more than smaller retailers. If that bill had becoome law, it would've been a disaster for Chicagoans. Fewer jobs, higher prices for goods.

From the Tribune editorial:

Despite the size trigger in the Chatham Market development and the now-defunct Big Box ordinance, this controversy has always been more about what's on the shelves than how many shelves there are. Wal-Mart is the nation's largest retailer—and the nation's largest grocer. Organized labor is determined to protect its unionized ranks at area Jewel and Dominick's grocery stores. That means it's determined to keep Wal-Mart and its big grocery departments out of Chicago.

Like Wal-Mart's employees, Lowe's workers also are non-union. Lowe's opened its 117,000-square-foot store in Chatham Market in December. Nobody protested. Lowe's doesn't sell groceries.

The city's latest rejection may not be the last turn of this wheel. Wal-Mart hasn't given up and neither has Ald. Howard Brookins (21st), who represents this area and knows how eager his constituents are for the hundreds of jobs and shopping convenience Wal-Mart would bring. But making this happen requires political courage from the mayor and from aldermen not beholden to labor. And there isn't much evidence of that.

The original developers of Chatham Market, Monroe Investment Partners LLC, vowed four years ago that "Wal-Mart is not now, and will not be, a part of our development." They might have added: A vacant lot is so much better.

Meanwhile, the food desert problem persists in Chicago and other large cities. The City of Chicago is aware of the problem, and as I noted in the related post, they are working to recruit medium-sized grocers (that means not Wal-Mart or Target) into the deserts.

Some people just don't get it.

Kensington Research's Frank Dal Bello appears on WGN-Radio

This afternoon, Bill Moller, subbing for regular WGN-Radio mid-day host John Williams, interviewed Frank Dal Bello of Kensington Research and Recovery, a Chicago-based firm. Eight days ago I related my experience with an overpayment we made to the Cook County Treasurer's Office. Maria Pappas is the Cook County treasurer. We received an official, scary looking property tax bill from the county, in the name of our home's previous owner, which we paid. Like most people these days, our property tax bill is included in our mortgage payment. As I explained in that post, it was a struggle to get our money back.

Dal Bello reiterated what I wrote last week, "If the county was doing its job, there would be no need for (Kensington) to exist."

The treasurer's office claims it's quite easy to recover overpayments, but does not automatically inform property owners that they've paid too much. Dal Bello says "some letters are sent, but it's just enough of an effort to say they're doing something."

According to Dal Bello, about 20,000 Cook taypayers overpay annually.

That sounds like the Cook County I know. Along those same lines, no one from the treasurer's office bothered to appear with Dal Bello and Moller.

About Kensington: Like the better known Keane Tracers, Kensington searches public records to find unclaimed monies. While searching Cook County records, it finds overpayments and double-payments. They inform the individuals who've overpaid, and the offer to get their cash back--Kensington keeps half.

This is important: After five years, if the overpayers do not collect their money, the county keeps it, Dal Bello added that "there is no recourse to recover this money" after that time has passed. Dal Bello believes that "roughly $20 million is kept by the county."

Yes, it may not seem fair that Kensington keeps half of the money they find as its commission. But as I stated in my post last week, and Dal Bello reiterated it, many people instead head to the Cook County Treasurer's web site, or call a special telephone number and begin the process, a difficult one I'd like to add, of getting their money back. But not everyone has internet access.

A bill in the Illinois General Assembly will limit fees companies like Kensington can charge to just a 10 percent cut. Fair? Perhaps. But it will put Kensington out of business. And it may mean the county, which just raised upped its sales tax levy by one percent, will keep even more money.

Kensington's Dal Bello believes that of Illinois' 102 counties, Cook is the only one that doesn't automatically inform taxpayers that they've paid too much.

County officials told WGN's Moller, off-air, that because of the enormity of Cook's population, over 5.3 million people, that it's too difficult to do.

But would an earnest effort by Maria Pappas' office cost more than $20 million? Or $1 million? The government, and I may be naïve on this point, is supposed to exist to serve the people--not the other way around.

State Rep. Hamos Holds House Budget Hearing, Says to Social Service Providers: Get Real, No Money

(Chicago, IL) -- Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) is organizing 19 regional budget hearings on this year's state spending plan, and State Rep. Julie Hamos (D-Evanston), right, chaired one such hearing in her district on Monday and was struck dumb by the multi-million dollar requests from social service providers despite an empty state treasury.

Hamos and State Rep. Lisa Dugan (D-Kankakee), who also chaired a budget hearing in Kankakee, appeared on WBEZ's 848 program, hosted by Gabriel Spitzer, to discuss their findings.

During the program, Hamos expressed dismay at providers' unrealistic budget requests totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, and Dugan expressed annoyance that Gov. Rod Blagojevich's office held a hearing earlier in the day to compete with Dugan's and later handed out brochures during her hearing to undercut the event.

The lawmakers also poured iced, cold water on the Governor's billion dollar tax credit initiatives, saying those too are unrealistic when the cupboard is bare.

They conveyed a deep foreboding on a likelihood of a swift budget resolution this year, noting budget talks have yet even to begin. Not pretty.

Facebook Activism Adopted By IL State Rep Greg Harris - Civil Union Legislation

(Cross-posted at WurfWhile.com)

It started with no money, no formal organization, no staff - just a Facebook page "Students for the Illinois Marriage Equality Bill" - and over 8,000 student activists signed on. State Representative Greg Harris, an advocate of Civil Unions recognized that these self-organized, grassroots voices represented an important part of an activist movement to support his House Bill 1826, historic legislation to extend basic legal protections to committed opposite-sex, same-sex and senior couples in Illinois by creating civil unions. Now there is a website, www.CivilUnionsIllinois.org, created and inspired by those thousands of young people throughout Illinois who came together online to support equality and fairness for all dedicated couples in our state. Visit www.CivilUnionsIllinois.org and get involved!

Here are some real people House Bill 1826 would (or would have) changed the lives of if the bill became law:

- In New Berlin, IL, Pam V. "is a widow whose late husband Scott worked for the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, IL. Scott died as the result of a liver transplant leaving her with a college age son and pre-teen daughter to support. Pam currently receives Scott's State of Illinois pension. Unfortunately, she would lose these pension benefits if she ever remarried."

- In Springfield, IL, Larry was prevented by Emergency room staff from making "critical care decisions for his unconscious life partner when the hospital could not locate paperwork. This forced Larry to leave his partner’s bedside to go home to look for documents. While [Larry] searched for copies, his partner passed away."

- In Champaign, IL, Lynn S. "struggled to care for her partner Linda as she battled a fatal liver disease. When Linda died, Lynn was denied the right to make arrangements for Linda’s cremation, despite their long, committed relationship."

Many people do not know that opposite-sex, same-sex and senior couples in Illinois can be denied the basic right to collect pensions necessary to maintain their quality of life, or make emergency health care decisions for their partners, or visit their partners in hospitals, or share a nursing home room, or even to make funeral arrangements after a partner passes away. In many cases there aren't clear legal procedures and laws to protect committed couples. That is wrong. Illinois can do better. You can help right now by sending a free, instant message to the legislature (Click Here To Make A Difference).

Over 8,000 young people took the time to make a difference. Shouldn't you?

Hillary Needs Misspoking Lessons

The Hill is alive with the Sound of Misstatements today, across cable news and the blogosphere.

The Swamp at the Chicago Tribune is even getting in on the action.

Being half-Irish, I can sympathize with Senator Clinton. As every good Irishman knows, you never let the facts get in the way of a good story. In fact, my criticism of Clinton is that she merely strung together a bunch of embellishments when a Big Lie to convince folks she's a combat-ready-commander-in-chief is actually what was called for. When it comes to politics, Hitler was right on this point:

"The great massed of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than a small one."

If you want a great laugh, Head of State gives Clinton pointers on how to really tell a good story.

But rather than throw her Misstatement under the bus, I think Senator Clinton needs to seize this moment to start a national dialog on storytelling. Let's face it: we all do it. To paraphrase the Rev. Jesse Jackson's speech from the 1984 Democratic National Convention: "Red, yellow, brown, black and white -- all fairytales are precious when spoken right."

A friend of mine in college believed that every great story begins:

"So, there I was, 10000 feet up. Two turning, two burning. MiGs...to the left of me. MiGs...to the right of me. Tailgunner, dead. Bombardier, dead. Nothing between me and the gates of Hell but my wits and half a pack of Lucky Strikes."

Case in point, when I campaigned in Western Illinois, every Democrat I met had their own story about Lane Evan's first campaign for Congress: the Vietnam vet from nowhere who campaigned on a shoestring budget against impossible odds, winning a staunchly Republican district.

After two months and hundreds of stories, I became convinced that Lane Evans had slept on every sofa throughout the district, subsisting on a diet of boiled shoe-leather soup.

This is how legends are borne.

Feel free to post your favorite political fairytale, Springfield myth or City Hall legend.

A Lesson in Canadian Health Care

For all those folks who think that Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's visions of health care are for you, consider this story.

The granddaughter of an acquaintance and her her family live in Canada.

The granddaughter and her mothers came to Illinois to visit this Easter.

But, it wasn't to celebrate the Holy Day with the family.

It was because the granddaughter's toe got hurt.

It wasn't healing.

Her mother took her to her Canadian pediatrician.

The pediatrician said she had to see a specialist. The wait was so long and the mother cared so much about her daughter that she decided to come south for medical care.

In order to prevent the long delays the Canadian system entails, the little girl came back to Illinois to see a specialist.

Maybe if the Democrats impose a similar system next year, we can go south of the border for better care.

www.gopillinois.com
(THE COMMENTARY: The first test of being a conservative is that you respect the rule of law. Elected officials who really are conservative would never engage in or allow political corruption. Anti-conservatives, like Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan, believe in moral relativism and that "the end justified the means." They believe that if they fight against conservatives and fight against conservative principles, they do not have to respect the rule of law and they can do whatever they want. The anti-conservative Daily Herald does everything it can to elect anti-conservatives in Illinois and to reelect anti-conservatives in Illinois. Then outrageously, the anti-conservative Daily Herald hypocritically asks "Where's the outrage?" over political corruption in Illinois (SEE DAILY HERALD EDITORIAL ABOVE), when in fact, the anti-conservative Daily Herald constructively argues that to keep conservatives out of statewide elected offices in Illinois, political corruption is a reasonable price for Illinois citizens to pay.)

Rep. Lipinski's real strength is his chief of staff?

There is just so much dreck in Illinois that it is impossible to keep up. Which is why I'm glad Erick Erickson of Red State sent me the below e-mail.

Before we get to that, I'd like to add that this is just another example of Chicago political nepotism. In the spring of 2004, Bill Lipinski, a longtime Democratic congressman in a district covering Chicago and its southwestern suburbs, ran in the Democratic primary and easily won a ticket to the general election. But he apparently had no intention of running in that contest--Lipinski engingeered it so his son, Dan, then a college professor, would take his place on the ballot. Had the younger Lipinksi run in an open Democratic primary on his own credentials, he would have had a tough battle. Since Illinois' 3rd Congressional District is heavily Democratic, Dan Lipinski coasted to victory that fall.

From Erick's e-mail:

Let's have some fun this morning.

Remember how the Democrats ran against the Culture of Corruption in 2006? Well, get a load of this story:

Congressman Dan Lipinski's Chief of Staff, Jerry Hurckes, has been sitting on the Board of Trustees of Oak Lawn, IL since 1999. During that time, and each time he's campaigned for re-election, the chief of staff has campaigned on how much bacon he's brought home. Again, this is not a Congressman, but a chief of staff to a Congressman.

Things have come to a head in Oak Lawn after a meeting last week. The Board of Trustees wanted to consider hiring a lobbyist and Hurckes went ballastic, hurling accusation at the Board that they were trying to do an end run around him.

This guy has never been elected to Congress, but he has been taking credit for things his boss has done.

I say we all call Congressman Lipinski this morning at (202) 225-5701 and ask when his Chief of Staff became Congressman Hurckes. When they tell us he has not, we should be sure to ask why then is Jerry Hurckes taking credit for bringing home the bacon to Oak Lawn. Is the Chief of Staff more powerful and influential than Congressman Lipinski?

Could be. The younger Lipinksi isn't popular, he weathered a tough primary challenge last month.

GOPUSA ILLINOIS Daily Clips - March 24, 2008

DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, GOPUSA ILLINOIS would be more than happy to include in a daily email any rebuttal that Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Chairman Andy McKenna might make to Doug Ibendahl's commentary below. Ibendahl is a Chicago Attorney, a former IRP General Counsel, and a Co-Founder of Republican Young Professionals (RYP).

CHAMPION NEWS
-- McKenna had another opportunity last week to show leadership – and blew it - Doug Ibendahl

http://www.championnews.net/article.php?sid=882
(THE COMMENTARY: Last year, The Republican detailed State GOP Chairman Andy McKenna's long history of less than honest behavior. Since then, McKenna's rap sheet of deceitful dealings and/or divisive conduct has continued to grow. (See for example here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.) The latest disappointment came last week as the government's star witness, Stuart Levine, began his testimony in the fraud trial of Tony Rezko. Levine, a Republican powerbroker and former finance chairman of Jim Ryan's 2002 gubernatorial bid, was charged with corruption along with Rezko. Levine previously pled guilty and agreed to testify in Rezko's trial. The website of McKenna's State Party organization has continued to highlight the ties between Rezko and Democrats like Governor Rod Blagojevich and Chicago Alderman Richard Mell. That's all well and good, and on this basic issue we do not differ with McKenna. Voters should be alerted to the bad acts of their public officials and called upon to hold those individuals accountable. But for McKenna to ignore the fact that this trial is about a two-party cesspool is completely disingenuous. This trial is about how influential powerbrokers from both the Democratic and Republican Party used their positions and connections to enrich themselves. As the Chicago Tribune's John Kass says, it's the Illinois Combine on trial. During Levine's testimony last week two other prominent names surfaced again, Republican bigwigs Bob Kjellander and Bill Cellini. But a visit to our State Party's website reveals not a mention of Kjellander's or Cellini's entanglement in this multimillion-dollar shakedown scheme. Kjellander and Cellini have thus far not been charged with any crime or accused of wrongdoing. But as we learned last week, this Rezko/Levine coalition grew out of their relationships with Bill "Individual A" Cellini and Bob "Individual K" Kjellander. Kjellander and Cellini were introduced to the jury last week as the "mutual friends" of Rezko and Levine. It was this shared association that allowed a trust level to develop quickly that ordinarily might take years to nurture. (You can read more media accounts of Levine's testimony involving Kjellander and Cellini here, here, here, here and here.) For a more complete list of the Republicans mentioned in connection with Rezko or Levine thus far, see here. Wheels spinning, no leading A true Republican leader would be standing-up and telling these fat cats their days are over. But that's not happening for the simple reason that McKenna is a product of the Kjellander/Cellini wing. Andy's their guy. The Kjellander/Cellini wing chose McKenna as the figurehead for the Illinois GOP precisely for his lack of spine. They wanted a State Party Chairman who would serve a tiny circle of old players, not the Republican Party as a whole. That's exactly what McKenna's done from day one. Had McKenna united long ago with rank-and-file Republicans on the goal of cleaning house, he would look like a leader today. McKenna for example should have simply joined the call for Kjellander's ouster as National Committeeman. But instead, McKenna's continued to provide cover for his friend Big Bob. McKenna now just looks silly when he takes shots at Blagojevich for pretty much the same kinds of relationships his pal Kjellander had with Rezko. In fact in some ways the Kjellander connections look more troubling. From what we've read, Kjellander seems to be the one making the personal fortune via the state, not Blagojevich. Had McKenna been a leader, the Rezko mess would largely just be a millstone for Blagojevich and Barack Obama today. Instead, McKenna's organization just spins its wheels in a hopeless quest to mislead voters into thinking this is only a Democrat scandal. While McKenna plays pretend, we get another day closer to the next November disaster for the Illinois GOP.)

DC vs. Heller

I watched C-Span's America and the Courts last night and listened to some of the oral arguments in this case. The case is a challenge of DC's gun control laws. So the only reason this is here is whether or not any of you thinks what a ramification of say a ruling against DC gun laws would have towards any local gun control legislation in the state. I could especially refer to gun control legislation in Chicago.

Here's more information for those of you who are following this US Supreme Court case.

-- VERY VERY VERY SAD: This will get GOP insiders a buzzin' - Jonathan Martin

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0308/This_will_get_GOP_insiders_a_buzzin.html
(THE POSTING: Via Playbook, I see that Bob Novak has the below item in his notebook column tomorrow. "John McCain's team that is taking over the Republican Party has decided on Bobbie Greene Kilberg, a liberal Republican from Virginia long detested by conservatives, to run the party's national convention in St. Paul, Minn., in August. "Kilberg, as an aide to President George H.W. Bush in 1990, promoted White House overtures to gay activists. She won an internal power struggle over gay politics with fellow Bush assistant R. Douglas Wead, who was fired as White House liaison to religious conservatives. When Kilberg appeared on television by McCain's side the night of Feb. 12 after he won the Virginia primary, her presence was resented by conservatives as a sign of contempt for them." This means little to the outside political world, but will create a stir among the elite of the elite within national and state GOP circles. UPDATE: A McCain aide says that Kilberg has not been tapped to run the convention and is only serving as a liaison with the RNC. McCain has not decided yet on who will run the convention, said this source.)

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_032108/content/01125104.guest.html
(THE POSTING: McCain has picked a huge, huge, not an independent Republican, not a moderate Republican. He has picked a liberal Republican to run the Republican National Convention, a woman, according to Bob Novak. She was involved in the George H. W. Bush administration with some kind of outreach. It's in the stack here somewhere. That's a slap in the face. "John McCain's team that is taking over the Republican Party has decided on Bobbie Greene . . ." This is a female, "Bobbie Greene Kilberg, liberal Republican from Virginia, long detested by conservatives, to run the party's national convention in St. Paul in September. Kilberg, as an aide to President George H. W. Bush in 1990, promoted White House overtures to gay activists. She won an internal power struggle over gay politics with fellow Bush assistant R. Douglas Weed, who was fired as White House liaison to religious conservatives. When Bobbie Greene Kilberg appeared on television by McCain's side on the night of February 12th after he won the Virginia primary, her presence was resented by conservatives as a sign of contempt for them." What else are conservatives supposed to think? This is McCain saying, "Screw you guys! I know who my base is. I know where I want my support to come from, and I'm going to go out there and I'm going to get it and I'm going to let this babe run my convention."

CHAMPION NEWS
-- John Kass is right, says conservatives aren’t the problem - Doug Ibendahl

http://www.championnews.net/article.php?sid=880
(THE ARTICLE: The Chicago Tribune's John Kass has another excellent column this Sunday called In Combine, cash is king, corruption is bipartisan. It's a must read. Here is just an excerpt: "'In the final analysis, The Combine's allegiance is not to a party, but to their pocketbooks. They're about making money off the taxpayers,' [Peter] Fitzgerald said. He should know. He fought The Combine and lost, and the empty suits running the Republican Party encourage their friendly scribes to blame the social conservatives for the disaster of the state GOP. Conservatives aren't the problem. Corruption is the problem." Truer words were never spoken. Good Republicans need to get to the Republican State Convention in Decatur this summer before these empty suits do even more damage to our once proud Illinois GOP. It's time to say "enough is enough." It's time to restore some honest, professional leadership. If you're a Republican voter, the Illinois Republican Party belongs to YOU don't forget, not to some old circle of incompetent moneychangers. Learn how to become a state delegate: All hands on deck for the Republican State Convention in June. But you need to act quickly. Time is of the essence to become a delegate with the power to vote for positive change. Doug Ibendahl is a Chicago Attorney and a former General Counsel of the Illinois Republican Party. ILLINOIS REVIEW
-- Wright had it better than I - Fran Eaton

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2008/03/wright-had-it-b.html
(THE COMMENTARY: Please excuse me if I take some time over the next few weeks to spew hatred and damn America on Illinois Review. After all, I'm entitled. I've been cheated. I'm not a millionaire. I'm not famous. I'm not highly educated. I am not a man. Even Dr. Jeremiah Wright had it better than I did. This week, Barack Obama told the world we needed to excuse the horrific anger and animosity spewing out of his "uncle's" mouth. It's understandable, he said. . .after all, Wright's the product of living through America's pre-60s black bigotry. Oh really? Just a brief perusal of the Illinois General Assembly's website, and we find a very different scenario, something George Dienhart tapped into yesterday. Indeed, on March 11, 2008, just as the Wright controversy broke nationally, our Illinois House agreed to a resolution extolling Wright's retirement from Trinity United Church of Christ. The resolution was sponsored by State Rep. Monique Davis of Chicago, who represents that district to the IL House, and who is reported to be regularly seen at Trinity. Read the resolution HERE -- you'll learn a little more about the so-called hard life Dr. Wright has endured. But the real eye opener is another resolution Rep. Davis sponsored in 2007, to honor Wright's 35 years at Trinity. In this resolution HERE, it says that Dr. Wright is the third generation of Wrights who graduated from college -- his grandparents first graduating from Virginia Union in 1900. For a lowly girl raised in St. Louis suburbs by Ozark-bred parents of whom neither attended nor graduated from high school, I have reason to feel cheated. Dr. Wright's family was more educated than mine was. He's privileged. I had it rougher than him. I'll bet he never heated water on a stove to take a bath nor put coal in a furnace first thing in the morning. I did. I'm angry . . .)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
-- In Combine, cash is king, corruption is bipartisan - John Kass

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-kass_bdmar23,1,2408773.column
(THE COMMENTARY: All week, Stuart Levine, the Republican snitch who loves his gladiator movies, has been telling the story of Illinois. He tells it from the witness stand in federal court, weaving the tale of this political boss and that political boss, that Democrat, this Republican, all working together for the common good. He means, the good stuff in their wallets. So I'm wondering, rhetorically for the purposes of a Sunday column, what do we call this relationship, again? This Illinois custom of quiet sharing of power across party lines for the benefit of a fat connected few? What is it? What is it, again? Formally, Levine is putting things together for the prosecution in the corruption trial of Illinois political fixer Tony Rezko. That's the narrow focus. Actually, he's telling a larger tale, about power and clout in our state. So I called former U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, the Republican maverick from Illinois who tried to fight political corruption and paid for it. For this sin, he was driven out of Illinois politics by political bosses, by their spinners and media mouthpieces, who ridiculed him mercilessly. Senator, what do you call that connection that Stuart Levine describes from the witness stand, you know that arrangement across party lines, with politically powerful men leveraging government to make money - what do you call it? "What do you call that Illinois political class that's not committed to any party, they simply want to make money off the taxpayers?" Fitzgerald said. "You know what to call them." What? "The Illinois Combine," Fitzgerald said. "The bipartisan Illinois political combine. And all these guys being mentioned, they're part of it." Oh, yeah. The Combine. I've been calling it The Combine for about a decade but hardly see it referenced elsewhere, and I don't want others to think I'm hoarding the Illinois Combine all to myself. Today, I'm sharing. I'm inviting other colleagues—political writers, editors, broadcasters and any combine suck up professors (DIERSEN QUESTION: Paul Green?) - to use "Illinois Combine" particularly if they're having difficulty explaining how two parties can be as one when there's money on the table. It's not trademarked. Come on guys, jump in, the Cellini's warm. "In the final analysis, The Combine's allegiance is not to a party, but to their pocketbooks. They're about making money off the taxpayers," Fitzgerald said. He should know. He fought The Combine and lost, and the empty suits running the Republican Party encourage their friendly scribes to blame the social conservatives for the disaster of the state GOP. Conservatives aren't the problem. Corruption is the problem. It is what it is. We are where we are, in The Combine state, and if you raise your head too high, The Combine will come along and chop you down. Ask Fitzgerald. But the Rezko trial is part of the U.S. Justice Department's attack on The Combine. The "Operation Board Games" investigation is about how appointments to state boards and commissions overseeing state pension fund investments and hospital construction were leveraged into paydays for the insiders. And what is playing out in the federal building is The Combine on trial. At one point in the testimony last week, Levine explained how ecumenical it is. He wrangled an invitation to a 2003 Christmas reception at the Bush White House. The invitation was courtesy of Robert Kjellander (pronounced $hell-an-der) a big shot Republican from Illinois who would become treasurer of the Republican National Committee. Kjellander is currently setting up the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where Republican nominee John McCain will no doubt denounce corruption and pay-to-play politics, with Kjellander in the wings. During the testimony last week, Levine said there had been others invited to the Bush White House, courtesy of Kjellander. There was Kjellander's buddy - and political boss - William Cellini, the road builder, hotelier, gaming czar and leader of the Springfield Republicans. And there was Rezko, the conduit to Democratic Gov. Rod "The Unreformer" Blagojevich, with whom Cellini and Kjellander had business ties. They brought their wives. They enjoyed themselves. Cellini and Kjellander haven't been indicted. Blagojevich hasn't been indicted, but he reeks of George Ryan, and if he goes down, the Illinois political scorecard will read: Illinois Governors 4 Chicago Mayors 0. "I was trying to point out, to the media and to the public, what these guys were doing behind the scenes was bad. Sometimes I felt like Cassandra - destined to prophesy the truth and not be believed," Fitzgerald said. Senator, I know the feeling. But it's believable now, in open federal court, for those with eyes to see. And those who pay taxes in The Combine state.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
-- How would Illinois and America be different now if Peter Fitzgerald had been reelected in 2004? What would Obama be doing now? - Dave Diersen
http://www.gopillinois.com/
(THE COMMENTARY: Please read John Kass' commentary above. I agree with Kass that Peter Fitzgerald "was driven out of Illinois politics by political bosses, by their spinners and media mouthpieces, who ridiculed him mercilessly." Some have complained that I included Peter Fitzgerald in the "Who is most responsible for the current condition of the Illinois Republican Party?" poll at http://www.gopusa.com/illinois/poll.shtml. I included Peter Fitzgerald because he was our U.S. Senator for 6 years and his decision to not run again had tremendous consequences for the Illinois Republican Party (IRP). Tragically, the Combine's success in driving Peter Fitzgerald out emboldened the Combine, emboldened those individuals and organizations that the Combine dominates, and emboldened those who want to be members of the Combine. I am as disappointed with Peter Fitzgerald's decision to not run again as I am with my own decision to a) cave into the nasty Democrats who run the Chicago Office of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) and b) take early retirement in 1997. I am disappointed with Peter Fitzgerald's position on race and gender based preference giving, reverse discrimination, and retaliation. I sued GAO shortly after I retired charging it with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation for complaining about it. Peter Fitzgerald appointed both the attorney who represented GAO - Patrick Fitzgerald - and the judge who tried my case - Amy St. Eve. Both Patrick Fitzgerald and St. Eve made it clear that they have no problem with race and gender based preference giving, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation for complaining about it, at least in my situation. If Peter Fitzgerald had run again, hopefully, he would have walked in the 2003 Wheaton Independence Day parade and he would have attended the picnic that I hosted in the Illinois Prairie Path Park in my precinct the day after the parade (Senator Lauzen had suggested that all precinct committeemen host such picnics). As it was, U.S. Senate candidates John Cox, Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan walked in the 2003 Wheaton Independence Day parade and attended my picnic with about 200 others. The Combine did not want Jack Ryan to win the primary in 2004. Jack Ryan nevertheless won the primary, but then, the Combine succeeded in getting him to withdraw. Because the Combine did not want Oberweis to fill the vacancy, the IRP State Central Committee filled the vacancy with Keyes. If Peter Fitzgerald had been reelected, I doubt that the IRP would be in the condition it is now and I doubt that Obama would be where he is now. I do not blame the IRP's current condition on Peter Fitzgerald, I blame it on the Combine and those who helped the Combine drive him out of politics.)

The conversations, secretly recorded by the FBI in 2004, between Rezko and star prosecution witness Stuart P. Levine, preceded more bombshell testimony by Levine. He told jurors he effectively was given a quid pro quo by Republican insiders Robert Kjellander and William Cellini for pushing through a $150 million state investment deal in 2002 for one of their lobbying clients, the Carlyle Group. In exchange, Levine said, he didn't have to pay an annual $75,000 debt to Kjellander, an ally of former Bush administration deputy chief of Staff Karl Rove. . . Levine said Kjellander called him and asked if Levine, as a TRS board member, could help him get the state to invest with Carlyle. "At that point, did you ask Mr. Kjellander for any money?" Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Niewoehner asked Levine. "No sir," Levine replied. "Mr. Kjellander is a very close associate of Mr. Cellini . . . and I was happy to help him." After Carlyle won the investment, he said Cellini, who worked with Kjellander, visited Levine's office. Cellini told Levine he no longer had to pay Kjellander for "present and future help" for a business called Compdent Group. Levine previously testified he paid Kjellander $75,000 a year as a lobbyist to win a State Board of Education contract for Compdent, a dental services provider. Levine was bound by TRS rules to disclose such a personal benefit but said he never did.)

IL Labor Relations Board Asleep at the Computer Switch as Costly Data Base Conversion Fizzles--Taxpayers Kiss $31,700 Goodbye

(Springfield, IL) — From Your-Tax-Dollars-at-Work-Department, Illinois Auditor General Bill Holland’s office reported last week that the Illinois Labor Relations Board was asleep at the computer switch during a recent data base conversion project.

The Board’s snooze cost Illinois taxpayers $31,700 smackers.

Released on March 13, Holland’s report said: “The Board had not established adequate planning, oversight, and controls over a contract for an information system project, which resulted in a costly system conversion project that did not meet the Board’s standards.“

Therefore, according to Holland, the Board is maintaining two databases which fail to meet the agency’s needs.

The Board paid the vendor $28,950 for this project, including $2,750 to try to fix the problems.

The Board, chaired by Jackie Gallagher, agreed it goofed.

Presumably, the Board’s next meeting should be interesting. No?

Bill-jacked

In the You Saw This Coming From a Mile Away Dept.: News outlets around the country ran a story the other day about the fact that a federal judge in Illinois is on the verge of expanding the pending lawsuit regarding the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act (aka, the 'Moment of Silence' law) into a bilateral class action.

What that means in simple terms is that the pending suit filed on behalf of one student against one school district will now include all Illinois public school students as plaintiffs and all Illinois school districts as defendants.

In the interest of brevity, I'm not going to delve into all of the underlying arguments about the law, but rather, try to point out that this tremendous waste of resources could be easily avoided but for a move that really undercuts the integrity of our legislative process.

In sum, last year Sen. Kimberly Lightford introduced a bill that amended a law that permitted schools to start each day with a moment of silence, (a law that itself was unnecessary, but one that nobody on either side took issue with during the entire time that it was on the books), and made it mandatory. Amazingly, not only did the bill pass both chambers, enough legislators in both chambers even voted to override the Governor's subsequent veto of the bill. (And in case you're wondering, I voted against the bill and against the override.)

Before session reconvened, I filed HB4180, which would fix a number of deficiencies in the law. I believed that enough of my colleagues, having heard from school superintendents, teachers, parents, the media, and now cognizant of the lawsuit, would understand that, despite having had what may have been good intentions, they had passed a very untenable, unnecessary and unworkable law.

The committee debate was a thorough and good one, and on March 4, HB4180 passed the full House by a vote of 72-31-6. What is notable about the vote is that over 30 legislators who had supported the current law viewed HB4180 as a better alternative and voted for it. The intention had been that Sen. Jeff Schoenberg would be the Senate sponsor and that we could continue to advance the legislation.

So it seemed that everything was on track for the Legislature to fix the situation and moot the pending lawsuit, right? Nope.

Without my knowledge, on the same day that my bill passed out of committee, Sen. Lightford filed a slip with the Senate secretary to take sponsorship of the bill if and when it got to the Senate. By so doing, she now has control of moving and/or amending the bill.

In fact, Sen. Lightford has recently stated her intentions to amend the bill to take the word 'prayer' out and substitute it with 'meditation' and to set the moment of silence at 60 seconds. Not 61, not 59, 60. Most importantly, she also plans to amend the bill to remove the permissive language and keep the law as a mandatory one. This despite the fact that there are not even penalties for violating the law.

In sum, she has amazingly found a way to take a bad law and make it potentially more inane. Worse yet, she is arrogantly depriving her Senate colleagues the same opportunity that House members had, namely to rectify a vote that they may wish they had not cast in the first place.

Had Sen. Lightford attempted to make these changes by filing her own bill, that would have obviously been her prerogative. But to try to do it in the manner that she is egregiously violates an inherent trust between colleagues and creates an environment of distrust where treachery reigns over process.

I spoke in person with Sen. Lightford about the situation last week, and told her that while I had no personal animus toward her, I truly had no respect for what she had done. I also asked her to do the honorable thing and relinquish the bill to a sponsor of my choosing. I received no response (which speaks volumes in and of itself).

What will happen now is that even if she is able to pass her bill, there is zero chance that I will call it for concurrence when it returns to the House. In that scenario, as she is well aware, the bill dies and the present law stays on the books.

Which brings us full circle to the pending court case. The expansion of the lawsuit to cover every school district as a defendant means that at a time when everybody talks about wanting to increase education funding, dollars that should be going into classrooms will instead be going into courtrooms. All because one legislator gave more importance to her personal agenda than to the will of the Legislature.

When the Governor took the same approach last year, the General Assembly wound up in a record-long session costing taxpayers millions of dollars. It wasn't right then, and it isn't right now.

None of the recent events have been lost on Judge Gettleman, the federal judge overseeing the pending lawsuit:
"I was hoping, frankly, this was further along in the legislative process," the judge said at Wednesday's hearing. "I was hoping we'd avoid spending resources on all sides."
So did I Judge. So did a lot of us.

Aim High

There was so much good stuff at the two meetings I attended Wednesday night. The McHenry County Democrats slated candidates for state's attorney, auditor and two for county board in my district.

At my second meeting, the Legislative Budget Hearing at McHenry County College, Al Wilson, long-time steward of the Lake in the Hills fen testified before State Senator Pam Althoff and State Representative Jack Franks and Mike Tryon.

Wilson related going down to Springfield to hold a press conference with Althoff in an attempt to restore money that Governor Rod Blagojevich had cut out of the Department of Natural Resources budget.

Wilson spoke of the man in DNR he called for advice.

“Because of the cuts, that one guy is now responsible for all the nature preserves from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River,” Wilson told the legislators.

He reported that such staff are now using leased equipment and that Blagojevich now wants an additional 14% departmental budget cut.

“When you see the governor, kick him in the knees... and aim high,”

were Wilson's parting comments.

There was widespread support evident in the crowd, which numbered about 100 when I arrived about an hour late, as there was for Franks' constitution amendment to allow recall of state officials when it was brought up.

Posted first as a "Message of the Day" on McHenry County Blog.

PAUL CAPRIO
-- The Audacity of Hate
www.gopillinois.com (3/20/08 News Clips page)
(THE COMMENTARY: After hearing Barack Obama's belated defense of his Reverend of 20 years, Jeremiah Wright, I think that Obama has demonstrated his own lack of judgement in dealing with "the audacity of hate" which has been spewed in his own home church for 20 years by Jeremiah Wright. The response to socially justice is not hate as Martin Luther King would have told both Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright. Hate speech, whether hatred of America, hatred of black people, or hatred of white people can never be justified. It must always be confronted as Barack Obama failed to do for nearly 20 years in his own home church. Further more, I find it very disturbing that an attempt has been made to make it appear that Jeremiah Wright and his hate filled anti-white, anti-American rhetoric is somehow representative of the majority of African American Christian Ministers in this country. Fortunately, it is not. This is an unfair stereotype of the Christian African American community which is attempting to work with the whitecommunity to constructively improve racial relations and promote social justice in America. As a Christian, it is time for Jeremiah Wright to repent of his hate filled remarks publicly. Then American can move on and not be further divided by his remarks which Barack Obama is now attempting to excuse and "spin" away.)

Ex-Speaker Hastert, SIU President Poshard Launch Capital Projects "Listening Tour" Why Will Gov. Blunt of Missouri Be Listening?

(Chicago, IL) – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard, co-chairs of the recently-minted Illinois Works Coalition, on March 19 launched a statewide listening tour in Decatur.

Hastert and Poshard were promoting Gov. Rod Blagojevich's Illinois Works scheme, a $25 billion capital program to build or rebuild the state's creaking and wheezing infrastructure, a plan which would generate approximately 700,000 jobs, according to Gov. Blagojevich's office.

One of the people who likely will be listening to the feedback from the Hastert-Poshard listening fest, specifically about bridge money, will be Gov. Matt Blunt of Missouri.

Why?

Gov. Blunt will be listening because on February 28, 2008 Blagojevich and Blunt announced an agreement to construct a new four-lane, $640 million bridge across the Mississippi River from East St. Louis to St. Louis.

Second Chicago Wal-Mart May Never Come

From Channel 2...

It looks like the city of Chicago might not get a second Wal-Mart store after all.

The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday that the City of Chicago has rejected a request by the world's largest retailer to build another store in the South Side's Chatham neighborhood.

For the project to move forward, Wal-Mart will need to get a law changed by the City Council. Under the current zoning for the Chatham Market shopping center at 83rd Street and Stewart Avenue, the city must approve any tenant leasing more than 100,000 square feet, the Tribune said.

Wal-Mart officials say they are still hopeful they can work out a solution with the city.

The first Wal-Mart in the city limits opened in September 2006 at North and Kilpatrick avenues on the city's West Side. That followed a spectacular political battle that began when the City Council passed an ordinance that would have required "big box" stores to pay workers at least $10 an hour plus $3 in fringe benefits.

The rules would only have applied to companies with more than $1 billion in annual sales and stores of at least 90,000 square feet.
I literally hate to open up another argument where people talk about whether or not there should be a mandated living wage. Two years ago I'd argue for the benefit of bringing job to struggling city neighborhoods. I still feel that way and I definitely won't join an argument in favor of a "living wage" with the belief that empolyers should pay a wage they deem fit.

At the same time there are those who don't care for Wal-Mart for fairly valid reasons as I've seen in this vid. This is not an Illinois focused video, but there are reasons to not like Wal-Mart other than because unions don't like them or whatever other contrived reason that can be had...
Still Chatham is a good neighborhood to have a Wal-Mart. There aren't many mom-and-pop stores that might run out of business. This should be a super-center where groceries should be sold so Jewel/Osco on 87th Street and the Chatham Food Center on 79th Street might have a run for their money.

Addition: A rare comment is posted at one of my other blogs, The Sixth Ward, where this post is cross-posted and asks some good questions.
Did you know some Chatham residents take pride in the fact that our community has the most black owned businesses in Chicago? ("mom & pop stores") And, did you know Chatham Food Mart is the only black owned grocery store in Illinois? So, do you still think Chatham is a good neighborhood to have a Wal-Mart?
Well Chatham is certainly a place well known for black-owned businesses. I'm certainly aware that Chatham Food Center (I apologize for not getting the name right) is the only black-owned grocery store in the state. Now as for Chatham being good for a Wal-Mart, well I could say it's good enough for a Target so it's certainly good enough for a Wal-Mart. That being said I wish I had an answer as to whether or not a Wal-Mart might automatically harm the Chatham neighborhood and those businesses already contain within. I would like to think even with a Wal-Mart they would still survive. I'm not convinced that keeping Wal-Mart out of the neighborhood is the answer.

DAILY HERALD
-- "By saying he can't reject Wright any more than he can reject people in his own family, he folded this own story into this larger story, presenting his church as his extended family." That doesn't work for Jim Durkin, a Republican state representative from Western Springs and co-chairman of John McCain's Illinois presidential campaign. Obama, Durkin said, waited until the past week to remove Wright from the campaign's African American Leadership Council even though the campaign admits it knew months ago that Wright's rhetoric could be a problem. Further, Durkin said, Obama's speech did not fully address the nature or scope of Wright's remarks. "Some people say these remarks were taken out of context, but I don't know what other explanation you can offer. How you can say that what he said is not what he meant?" Durkin said. "He talks about the U.S. government injecting the AIDS virus into black Americans as a form of genocide. He's suggests that somehow 9/11 was something America brought on itself." Obama's long-standing and ongoing association with Wright, Durkin said, speaks to issues of judgment, which, he said, Obama has placed at the heart of his own campaign when applied to such issues as the Iraq war.

David Paterson revealed Tuesday that he had affairs with a ''number of women,'' including a state employee, but said that does not affect his ability to lead. Paterson had admitted one affair in a newspaper interview hours after taking office Monday, but gave a fuller accounting at a news conference with his wife at his side. ''Several years ago, there were a number of women,'' he said. ''The public wants to know who its elected officials are and sometimes, even though you are human, and you are someone who just has feelings and has faults, there comes a time, perhaps, when you have to tell the public.'' Paterson said the affairs happened during a rough patch in his marriage, and that the employee did not work for him. (Detroit mayor: I'm not leaving - Corey Williams DETROIT -- A defiant Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick quickly rejected the City Council's call Tuesday for him to resign because of accusations that he lied under oath about not having an affair. ''You take a whole day to discuss an issue like this,'' he said. ''My reaction is: This is over. It has no effect. It's not binding. Let's get back to work.'' The resolution, passed 7-1, amounted to a ''no-confidence'' vote because the council lacks the power to force Kilpatrick to step down. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is investigating whether the mayor and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath when they testified in a whistle-blowers' lawsuit that they had not had a physical relationship. Kilpatrick has been dogged by media reports about steamy text messages the two exchanged that suggest a romantic relationship.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
-- Obama makes his stand Speaks out on pastor’s comments, Rezko trial in attempt to clear air - Bernard Schoenburg
http://www.sj-r.com/News/stories/27181.asp
(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood, who won election as a delegate to the Republican National Convention as a backer of U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for president, said he thinks Obama is taking a page from the McCain playbook. “I think he realizes that if he’s the nominee that he’s going to be running against a candidate who has a reputation for telling it like it is,” LaHood said, and that “straight talk” image allows McCain to draw independents and Democrats to his side. The Peoria Republican, who is retiring from office this year, added that the editorial board meetings apparently “paid big dividends” for Obama because they led to positive comments in the newspapers about the open - if late - responses. But while LaHood thinks Obama is using the right tactics to meet issues head-on at this point, he is not certain that Obama can overcome the comments of his former pastor. “In politics … there’s a saying that when you’ve been tarred and feathered . . . maybe you get the feathers off, but you never get all the tar off,” LaHood said. “There’s no doubt . . . that a big part of our country is still very prejudiced and still very racist. And that speech by his pastor played into those attitudes and those values . . ." . . . Durbin recalls Obama’s closeness to Rev. Wright U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Tuesday recalled Feb. 10, 2007, when his fellow Senate Democrat, Barack Obama, used a Springfield venue to announce his candidacy for president: “I was in the Old State Capitol with Reverend Wright on the day of Barack’s announcement when a decision was made that Reverend Wright would not speak because of some of the comments that he’d made earlier,” Durbin said. “It was a painful moment between the two of them, because, as Barack said (in the speech), Reverend Wright married him and Michelle, baptized his children, was responsible for his … dedication to the Christian faith. So it was a very painful moment when he had to tell him that he couldn’t speak at that announcement. “There was a quiet prayer ceremony in the basement of the Old State Capitol which I was part of before he (Obama) came on stage.” Obama’s speech was delivered from a platform outside the building.)

(FROM THE COMMENTARY: There is nothing more terrified than a white political reporter about to be called a racist. Unless, of course, it is a "transcendent" black presidential candidate of great promise, harangued by political thugs as not being black enough, perhaps concerned he'd be denounced as a traitor if he condemned not only Wright's words, but Wright himself. Obama must have heard such hate speech from that pulpit for years and said nothing of it, even though the white grandmother who loved him and helped raise him would have certainly cringed before Wright's anger. Yet Obama did invoke his grandmother Tuesday in his speech. He said she loved him even though he'd heard her admit some racial prejudice that "made me cringe." He treated Wright as a complicated man, yet he reduced his grandmother to a two-dimensional rhetorical device, to protect her grandson from criticism that he didn't go far enough to condemn Wright's foolishness.)

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2008/03/cross-to-state.html
(THE ARTICLE: Cross to state GOP: infighting has to stop - Rick Pearson The leader of Republicans in the Illinois House said Tuesday the recent special election loss of a far west suburban congressional seat formerly held by GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert should provide a wake-up call to the party’s battling interests that the infighting has to stop. Rep. Tom Cross of Oswego, who was mentored in politics by Hastert, also said he is hopeful that the months until the November general election can provide a healing period for Republicans split between their nominee, businessman Jim Oberweis, and his unsuccessful primary challenger, state Rep. Chris Lauzen of Aurora. But Cross said he would not try to play a mediator role between the two. The fracture following a bitter primary between Oberweis and Lauzen, where each tried to claim the conservative mantle, as well as Oberweis’ past history as an unsuccessful GOP candidate for U.S. Senate and governor, are being cited as major factors for Democrat Bill Foster winning the March 8 special election to fill Hastert’s seat for the rest of the year. The result also has fueled fears among Republicans of a repeat in the November general election, when Foster, already sworn in as 14th District congressman, and Oberweis compete for the next two-year term. Lauzen did not endorse Oberweis, and Republican vote totals were down significantly in the Saturday special election Foster won. Cross acknowledged that a meeting of Oberweis and Lauzen to reach some accommodation “would certainly help,” but added, “I don’t think I would be the one to mediate.” Cross said the congressional results point to a larger problem for Republicans in general - a continued “fight because people aren’t on our same page on every issue” - that could leave the GOP “in the minority for a long time.” “For us to lose, even in a special election, the seat held by the former speaker of the United States House of Representatives should be a big wake-up call for every Republican that the infighting—because someone’s not conservative enough or this enough or that enough- may have lasting consequences for us,” he said. Cross, a social moderate, acknowledged Republican moderates also cannot refuse to support a GOP candidate because they are too conservative. “It plays both ways,” he said. Still, Cross acknowledged there is no one with the authority within the GOP to stop the infighting. “I’d like to think in an ideal world, we’d have the big strong person who comes in, bangs everybody’s head together and says, ‘This is stupid. It doesn’t accomplish anything. It hurts us,’ ” he said. “I don’t know that that person exists right now.” Cross’s comments came after he and Reps. Tim Schmitz of Batavia and Ruth Munson of Elgin announced legislation aimed at banning automated telephone calls, particularly political calls they said had become a nuisance during the special election. At least nine states tightly restrict the so-called robocalls, but a spokesman for Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) expressed freedom-of-speech concerns and noted the deadline for legislation to advance from House committees expired last week.)

CHAMPION NEWS
-- All hands on deck for the Republican State Convention in June - Doug Ibendahl

http://www.championnews.net/article.php?sid=873
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2008 Illinois Republican Party Convention will be held on Friday, June 6th and Saturday, June 7th at the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel, 4191 West U.S. Highway 36 (Wyckles Road), Decatur, Illinois. Every Republican who is tired of our State GOP being a national laughingstock should make plans to attend. This is a where Republicans can accomplish real change. Recall that we've been pushing for a special state convention for a couple of years now as a way to empower rank-and-file Republicans to fix a broken organization. Some State Republican Parties, like the one in Wisconsin, have a GOP convention every year. But our old guard here has had no use for that kind of open model. Now we're less than eight months away from what is likely to be another devastating November election for Illinois Republicans. The good news is the old faces can't run away from this June convention. Illinois law says our State Party has to have a state convention at least once every four years, and the last one was held in May of 2004. If you're a committed Illinois Republican voter who knows that our GOP can and must do better in the Land of Lincoln, you need to get to this convention. The first step is to call or e-mail your GOP County Chairman and ask to become a delegate to the State Convention. You don't have to be a delegate to attend the convention, but that's the best way to help effect change. That will give you a vote on the floor. You can find contact information for all 102 Republican County Chairmen here. Most of these folks are decent people and dedicated Republicans. As a group, I would say the County Chairmen are far more serious about fixing the State GOP than the 19-members of the State Party's Central Committee. Most of the County Chairmen are true grassroots volunteers, doing a largely thankless job simply because they're passionate about the GOP and its founding principles. Out of the 102 County Chairmen there may be a small handful that aren't sincere about advancing the ball, and there may be a tiny, tiny number who you may find are just openly hostile to any sort of positive change. If you encounter resistance, get the run-around, or if you just have any questions, please let me know at dibendahl@ilryp.org. In appropriate cases we'll put more sunshine on any problems through follow-up articles.)

Cellini, Kjellander and Jim Ryan are accused of no wrongdoing. But the embarrassment of finding their names tied to Levine's underlines the explosive potential of the biggest political corruption case in Illinois since former Gov. George Ryan went to federal prison. Kjellander is a former treasurer of the Republican National Committee. Levine estimated he contributed $500,000 to Jim Ryan's campaign for governor in 2002 in which he was defeated by Blagojevich. Former House Speaker Lee Daniels and George Ryan were also among the beneficiaries of his political contributions, Levine testified.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: VERY SAD: McCain, illegals, those who exploit illegals, and companies who see America as being just another country to exploit are overjoyed - John Fund insults Oberweis and Santorum as "immigration hotheads"
www.wsj.com
(THE COMMENTARY: McCain's Warning to Immigration Hotheads John McCain has a message for Republican candidates who are planning to run on strong anti-immigration themes this fall. Pay attention to recent election defeats by get-tough candidates and modulate your message accordingly. Mr. McCain told National Public Radio on Monday that he believes noisy anti-immigration rhetoric helped defeat Republicans in several high-profile border state races in Texas and Arizona. He also singled out Pennsylvania, where Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania lost re-election in 2006, and Illinois, where Jim Oberweis stunned the GOP this month by losing the special election to fill the seat of former House Speaker Denny Hastert. "Senator Santorum emphasized that issue [immigration] and lost by a large number," Mr. McCain told NPR. "We just had a loss of Denny Hastert's seat out in Illinois. The Republican candidate out there, I am told, had very strong anti-immigrant rhetoric also, so I would hope that many of our Republican candidates would understand the political practicalities of this issue." Mr. Oberweis lost for a variety of reasons, but his high-octane immigration rhetoric clearly didn't help him as he lagged well behind normal GOP totals in the suburban Chicago seat. As a millionaire he spent big bucks from his own pocket airing an ad decrying how Washington politicians "can't seem to fix" the problem and calling for "tougher sanctions" on employers and illegal immigrants. Mr. Oberweis ran similar ads during his 2004 primary race for U.S. Senate, which he also lost. Indeed, the Oberweis electoral track record is such that many local GOP leaders are urging him to step aside and allow the Republican he beat in the special election primary, State Senator Chris Lauzen, to replace him when the former Hastert seat comes up again in November. But Mr. Oberweis is nothing if not proud and insists he has a good chance of evening the score by defeating the new Democratic incumbent Bill Foster this fall. Nonetheless, Congressional Quarterly now rates the race in the normally Republican seat as Mr. Foster's to lose.)

Cook County treasurer's office working against taxpayers

Because Cook County, Illinois, where I live, added one percent to an already high sales tax rate, Chicagoans will soon be the sorry souls paying the nation's highest sales tax. Suburbanites like myself will pay a little less, but my sales tax rate will only be among the highest in the nation.

What do citizens like myself get in return? Not much.

Sometimes people pay too much in tax to the county, property taxes usually, and the county can't even handle that properly.

A Chicago company called Kensington Research and Recovery, a member of the Better Business Bureau, specializes in scouring public records to find cash for individuals who have overpaid their taxes, been overcharged, or for some reason or another have money owed to them from a government entity. Companies like Kensington, or the better-known Keane, are called "finder" or "tracer" firms.

Kensington mails letters to those who may have public money coming their way--and they keep half of what they find. This is completely legal. Keep in mind in many cases, the individuals who receive those letters quickly do some research on their own and collect their cash. All of it. Others hire Kensington.

Let me tell you from personal experience, getting money returned from Cook County is an onerous task. After we moved to Morton Grove in 1999, Mrs. Marathon Pundit paid the real estate tax--the bill came in the name of our home's previous owner, even though I told her that our property taxes are added into our monthly mortgage payments. Hey, I make mistakes too. And so do many of the 5.3 million residents of Cook County.

I quickly wrote a letter to the office of Maria Pappas, the Cook County Treasurer. The reply I got was something along the lines of, "Yes, you are correct. Mail a copy of the cancelled check you sent us, and we'll return your money." I did that. A month later, I got another letter, stating "We need a copy of both sides of the cancelled check." I called my bank, and they sent me the a copy of both sides--for a fee. A key point: In the first letter, the treasurer's office didn't specify they needs both sides of the check.

About four months later, we finally got our money back. It was sealed in red tape. Okay, I'm kidding about that last part.

Now you know why Kensington Research keeps half the money they collect for their clients. Dealing with government bodies can be an ordeal.

Kensington doesn't charge an "up-front fee," and if they collect no cash, Kensington doesn't charge their clients a penny.

For almost two years, until July 2007, Kensington was prevented from submitting requests to the county treasurer's office, saying "it had become overwhelmed by the number of requests." A judge now allows Kensington to submit 400 research inquiries a month.

Call me an idealist, but why can't Cook County simply notify taxpayers of overpayments? Especially since there is a five year statute of limiations to collect county overpayments.

Let me tell you about more red tape. Last Tuesday, I was summonsed for jury duty. I waited in line for a half an hour in the cold to make it past the security check so I could get into the courthouse. There are some regional county offices also in that building. The woman in line next to me, who was about sixty, was there to let the treasurer's office staff know that her mortgage was finally paid off.

That was mighty cold red tape.

NBC 5 Chicago did a story last Thursday on Kensington, one that took the politicians' side of things.

But let me remind you: Even on a relatively simple refund that was clearly owed to my wife and I, it was a major struggle to get our money back.

Illinois' State Treasurer, Alexi Giannoulias, has stepped into the fray. He told NBC 5, "Essentially, these companies are duping consumers for substantial amounts of money on property that is already theirs."

Giannoulias supports a bill that will compel firms like Kensington to disclose more information in their solicitation letters that will make it easier for taxpayers owed money, that is, to collect it on their own--for free--rather than using Kensington or some other company. As I stated earlier, often citizens do that anyway. The bill places a 10 percent finder's fee cap on the tracer companies. That may seem fair. But will the tracer firms bother to toil for a much smaller fee? And will this mean that Cook County will end up keeping more overpayments?

Let's be clear--If Cook County was doing things in a proper fashion--a foolish hope, perhaps, companies like Kensington wouldn't have to step in. Just as nature abhors a vacuum, so does the marketplace. When there is an unfulfilled need, business steps in. Particularly when the public sector fails.

There has to be a better way.

Giannoulias' office has a site where citizens can search for unclaimed property. But not for tax overpayments. The county treasurer's office site has nothing of the sort, but does note you can make tax payments at over 300 Chase Bank locations.

I'm sure Chase appreciates the plug, and the Chase logo looks real nice on the Cook County Treasurer's web site.

UPDATE March 20: There is a spot on the county treaurer's site to search for refunds, but it is not easy to use.

Bean Bends Under Greenberg Attack

Yesterday, McHenry County Blog published a press release from 8th congressional district Republican challenger Steve Greenberg to Democrat incumbent Melissa Bean.

Greenberg pointed out that it was illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to congressional (or, for that matter, presidential—remember the Chinese donations to President Bill Clinton in 1996?) campaigns. Greenberg even sent a copy of the $1,000 invitation, which was published here yesterday.

Today, Greenberg issued a press release reporting that Bean had realized the error of her ways.

She is no long holding her $1,000 fund raiser from at the home of Chicago's Serbia's Chicago Consul General Desko Nikitović.

She's moved it.

Here is the headline of the new press release:

ILLINOIS REVIEW
-- Why the Rev. Wright Story Is Gathering Steam - Mark Rhoads
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2008/03/why-the-rev-wri.html
(THE ARTICLE: Today a liberal ("progressive") columnist for the Liberal (aka "progressive") Washington Post is asking exactly the same question many conservatives have been asking here on the posts of Illinois Review: "why did it take Sen. Obama so long to denounce his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright?" CLICK HERE to see the Richard Cohen theory about the Wright-Obama connection. Until the Brian Ross story on ABC-TV Good Morning America on March 13, the story of incendiary tirades by Rev. Jeremiah Wright had not gained very much national news media attention beyond a growing number of blog articles such as those by Illinois Review editor Fran Eaton. Sen. Obama appears to be sincere on the video tape released by his campaign in which he condemns remarks made by his former pastor. That was a good first step in clearing the air even if it was very late. But one cannot help but wonder how amazing it is, given all the video tape material now floating around, that Sen. Obama was able to miss so many church services on exactly the days that Rev. Wright made some of his most hateful statements. Could it happen? Sure. But is it likely? The jury is still out and therein lies some difficulty for Sen. Obama because soon the issue could, repeat could, become a story about Obama's personal credibility rather than the original story as inflammatory as it is. If, again if, some video tape is discovered that actually shows Sen. Obama and his wife in a pew and nodding in assent during a Rev. Wright tirade, it will be so much harder for Obama to explain away. The odds that such a tape might exist are more rather than less due to the celebrity status of Obama even during his ten years as a state senator before his election to the U.S. Senate. Now a lot of resources for network TV and other non-conservative media are being devoted to the search for more video tape. Stay tuned. Obama does not need another Canada-NAFTA story where he tells reporters something that turns out to be not true. Obama is a candidate who has little to offer in national experience so he counts heavily on the fact that voters will trust his judgment. So far in this particular matter, it is exactly Obama's judgment that has been found wanting.)

In his speech today, if Obama would be honest, he would acknowledge that if elected, he would continue to force race and gender based discrimination in America, that is, that he would advance the Democrat Party platform, a platform that forces America a) to give preference to minorities and to give preference to females, and therefore, b) to discriminate against whites and to discriminate against males. In his speech today, if Obama would be honest, he would acknowledge that he and all Democrats blame Republicans for all the problems that minorities and females have and that therefore, if elected, he would assure that only Republican whites and Republican males would have to pay the price of reverse discrimination.

(THE ARTICLE: Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is still supporting Republican businessman Jim Oberweis to replace him in Congress but acknowledges winning the seat back from a Democrat won't be easy. Democrat Bill Foster beat Oberweis in a special election March 8 to win the northern Illinois seat Hastert held for two decades. Hastert retired late last year, forcing a special election to fill the seat until the November general election. Oberweis, who was backed by Hastert, beat state Sen. Chris Lauzen, an Aurora Republican, Feb. 5 in a special primary election for the right to take on Foster. Hastert blamed ugliness in that battle and a short turnaround time between the two elections for Oberweis' subsequent loss. "It was a very bad primary and it wasn't enough time to come back and recover from it," Hastert said Monday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. Foster and Oberweis will square off again this fall, with Foster having the advantage of a few months in the seat. Oberweis said last week he couldn't say why he failed to keep the seat in GOP hands. Hastert said Oberweis will have to decide whether it's worth putting more of his own money into challenging Foster and what kind of campaign he needs to run this fall. Hastert said he considers the millionaire businessman a "good guy" who has "great practical experience, business experience." "He has to really remake himself in the public's eye," Hastert said. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconnews/news/847890,2_1_AU18_14THDIST_S1.article
(THE ARTICLE: It's been more than a week since Democrat Bill Foster defeated Republican Jim Oberweis to become the next congressman from the 14th District. But heavy-hitting Republicans are still weighing in on why their party lost. On Monday, Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, appeared on National Public Radio's Morning Edition and mentioned the 14th Congressional District election. McCain flew to Aurora last month to campaign for Oberweis, appearing at a fundraiser that pulled in $257,000, according to campaign staffers. During his radio interview, McCain discussed illegal immigration, and suggested that hard-line stances on that issue contributed to Oberweis' defeat. Oberweis has long been a proponent of strengthening laws to curb illegal immigration. "We just had a loss of Denny Hastert's seat out in Illinois," McCain said. "The Republican candidate out there, I am told, had very strong anti-immigrant rhetoric also, so I would hope that many of our Republican candidates would understand the political practicalities of this issue." Oberweis spokesman Bill Pascoe said that McCain is simply misinformed -- Oberweis has never spoken against immigrants, just against illegal immigration. "What Jim has spoken out for forcefully is the enforcement of our laws," Pascoe said. Retired Speaker Hastert, whose seat Foster won, said Monday he is still in Oberweis' corner for the November election. He blamed the intense primary election between Oberweis and State Sen. Chris Lauzen and the short turnaround time before the March 8 special election for the loss. In an interview with the Associated Press, Hastert said Oberweis will have to decide whether it's worth putting more of his own money into challenging Foster. Hastert said Oberweis is "a good guy" who has "great practical experience, business experience." "He has to really remake himself in the public's eye," Hastert said. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/17/politics/politico/thecrypt/main3944618.shtml
(THE POLITICO ARTICLE: McCain Cautions Candidates On Immigration - By Josh Kraushaar On NPR’s “Morning Edition” today, John McCain suggested that strong anti-immigrant rhetoric contributed to two recent, high-profile GOP Congressional losses – of former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who badly lost to Sen. Bob Casey in 2006, and Jim Oberweis, who lost the heavily Republican seat of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert this month in a special election. "I know that there have been some races, like here in Pennsylvania, where Senator Santorum emphasized that issue [immigration] and lost by a large number,” McCain said on NPR. “We just had a loss of Denny Hastert's seat out in Illinois. The Republican candidate out there, I am told, had very strong anti-immigrant rhetoric also, so I would hope that many of our Republican candidates would understand the political practicalities of this issue.” McCain campaigned for Oberweis last month, helping the campaign raise about $257,000. Oberweis will be on the ballot again in November, against Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.) During the campaign, Oberweis proposed his own plan to crack down on illegal immigration, and aired a television ad arguing that politicians in Washington "can't seem to fix" the problem. McCain’s advice is going against the strategy of a handful of leading Republican Congressional candidates. Just today, one of the Republicans’ top Congressional recruits, Hazleton mayor Lou Barletta, invited all three presidential candidates “to come to our great city to discuss the issue of illegal immigration in the United States.” Barletta, who is running against Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.), has built a national political following over his strident opposition to illegal immigration and the punitive measures that he took as mayor to curb it. SOUTHTOWN STAR
-- VERY VERY VERY SAD: Illinois GOP vulnerable to Obama effect: POLL: Obama-60, McCain-31 or Clinton-48, McCain-37 - Rich Miller

http://www.southtownstar.com/news/miller/845731,031708miller.article
(THE COMMENTARY: A new statewide poll confirms what most of us knew anyway. If Barack Obama is the Democratic presidential nominee, he will do a whole lot better in Illinois against Republican John McCain than would Hillary Clinton. But there's more to it than that. The SurveyUSA poll of 600 Illinois registered voters was released last week. It found Obama trouncing McCain in a hypothetical match-up, 60 to 31. Clinton, on the other hand, leads McCain by a far smaller margin and holds less than 50 percent, 48 to 37. The poll, conducted Feb. 29, found Obama has big leads with both men and women, while McCain would beat Clinton by 10 points among men (48 to 38). And Obama stomps McCain with independent voters 60 to 29, while Clinton has a slight lead, 39-36. In fact, according to the new poll, Obama wins every demographic except Republicans and conservatives, but his margins there are narrower than are Clinton's. Obama even wins the suburban collar counties against McCain by 20 points, 57 to 37, and he holds a 52-to-32 lead among downstate voters. Clinton trails McCain in the suburbs, 47 to 34, but does lead downstate, 49 to 42. Obama's margin in suburban Cook County, which will be the location of several state legislative showdowns this November, is far higher than Clinton's. Obama is up 60 to 32, while Clinton leads 51 to 32. The numbers clearly show why Illinois Republicans are so nervous that Obama might pull off a nomination win. McCain isn't doing particularly spectacular against either candidate, but the national Republican Party likely is to spend some money in Illinois if Clinton is the nominee. They'll likely abandon the state if Obama is at the top of the ticket, which could cost Republicans about a million dollars in national cash and could lead to some serious legislative blowouts in unexpected places. One top legislative Republican speculated last week that an Obama presidential campaign could cost the Illinois Senate Republicans at least two additional seats this fall. The House Republicans, who faced little opposition from the Democrats in 2006, likely would lose more. Republican congressional candidate Jim Oberweis' convincing loss in a suburban special election earlier this month also proves that in this environment, Republicans at the state legislative level - where name recognition is lower than the U.S. House - need to have strong candidates, and they need to work them hard and pray four or five times a day that Obama doesn't win the nomination and then cut ads for their Democratic foes. Oberweis was a disaster on just about every level, and few down-ballot Republicans are nearly that bad. But the Republicans need to recognize that every Republican in that district could be in danger come November when Oberweis runs again for the seat. Oberweis' November candidacy might very well pull down some of their down-ballot candidates. Add that to any Obama effect, and the Republicans have to be tearing out their hair right now.)
-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: Dillard v. Watson
http://www.southtownstar.com/news/miller/845731,031708miller.article
(THE RICH MILLER COMMENTARY: Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) last week said he is seriously considering resigning his unpaid leadership post with the Senate Republicans because he was "clearly misled" by Senate GOP leader Frank Watson. Dillard claims Watson promised to appoint him to recently retired state Sen. Todd Sieben's assistant minority leader slot. But that didn't happen. After Sieben retired, Sen. Dale Righter was appointed to the paid position. Righter, who has been serving as a sort of de facto floor leader for leadership during debates, had been the Senate Republicans' caucus chair, which also is an unpaid leadership job. Sen. Dale Risinger was then given Righter's old spot. Dillard said he would use the two-week spring break to decide whether he will continue as minority whip or step down from leadership altogether "since I believe I was misled." Dillard lost an election for the top Senate Republican Leadership job to Watson after Senate President Pate Philip decided not to continue leading the caucus when the Democrats took control of the chamber in 2003. Relations since have been somewhat tense between Dillard and Watson and weren't helped much when Dillard appeared in a TV ad for Obama's presidential campaign. With the Obama polling and Oberweis' candidacy problems, the last thing the Republicans need right now is another round of divisiveness. But that may be just what they get. The infamous Illinois Republican circular firing squad never seems to miss its target.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: Dennis Byrne blasts "leaders" who are responsible for the Illinois Republican Party's (IRP) bad current condition, but does not name them. Does Byrne blame Tom Cross, Kirk Dillard, Jim Edgar, MaryAlice Erickson, Peter Fitzgerald, Dennis Hastert, Bob Kjellander, Andy McKenna, George Ryan, Jim Ryan, Jim Thompson, Judy Baar Topinka, Frank Watson, the IRP State Central Committee members with the heaviest weighted vote? Many of these leaders are orchestrating the IRP's quadrennial convention in Decatur on June 6-7.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-oped0317byrnemar17,0,1536037.story
(THE COMMENTARY: Illinois GOP's failures are so stunning that party must be rebuilt - Dennis Byrne Jim Oberweis perhaps should quit now as the Republican candidate in the 14th Congressional District -- former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's district -- before he sets some kind of record for most congressional elections lost in a single year. If Oberweis stays in the race and loses, it will be the fifth time in as many tries that he has failed to get elected to a major office. Oberweis' ego has embarrassed the party enough; another loss in November to Bill Foster, who beat Oberweis in the traditionally Republican district in the March 8 special election, likely will cement that seat firmly in the Democratic camp for many years. Then again, perhaps Oberweis shouldn't withdraw, since the likelihood is great that party officials would replace him with someone even worse. Someone such as Alan Keyes, the guy who party leaders brought in from the outside to run for U.S. senator after the primary's winner, Jack Ryan, was forced to withdraw when operatives in his own party outed him for allegedly taking his wife to sex clubs. That's old history, of course. The more recent history is the surprise that many suburban voters in the Cook County GOP primary got when they looked at their ballots and found a bunch of blank spaces because no Republican was running for county office, except for state's attorney (Tony Peraica). Some voters found no GOP legislative candidate or judge on their ballots. It has become so bad that Republicans couldn't even find the usual sacrificial lambs to maintain the pretense of the party's existence. Most amazingly, the moldering Republican Party hasn't leveraged to its advantage the fact the Democrats are almost exclusively responsible (exception, see below) for our corrupt, bungling and tax-sucking state and local governments. Todd Stroger, Rod Blagojevich, the Democratic-controlled House and Senate, the entire Cook County government. How many opportunities do Republicans need to be handed before they cash in on the totality of malfeasances, misfeasances and nonfeasances committed by Democrats? The problem, of course, is that too many "Republicans" have themselves cashed in by signing on to the various Democratic feasances. It's hard for Republicans to define themselves as the party of reform when many of the party's "leaders" are on their backs waiting for their tummies to be scratched by Democrats. No amount of rhetoric will convince reform-hungry voters -- I assume some exist -- that Republicans are serious until the corporate and civic bigwigs passionately and publicly cut their ties with the likes of Mayor Richard Daley. But wouldn't that be suicide? Isn't that the way we get things done around here? Yeah, sure. Just look and see how well everything is working. Governments mired in corruption that hits every taxpayer in the wallet. Governments confiscating more and more taxes to finance their buddy systems. Governments unable to efficiently provide basic services. Racking up record deficits. Dodging their creditors. Yes, you guys in the corporate and civic corner offices, this is a government that works. It's so wonderful, I'm sure you'd like to mimic it in your own operations. Obviously, it takes more than being not-Democrat to successfully run for office. Which is why Republicans have to begin finding a way to enunciate what they are for. Republicans have been at each other's throats for too long, for whatever reason. It's a cliche to say that Republicans have to stand for something, but it's true. Republicans here stand for nothing. The only passionate ideas are found in the nooks occupied by the ideologically pure, whose causes individually aren't enough to add up to a successful campaign. Republicans need to pick something they are fierce about. They can start by finding out what they agree on. But having ideas is no good unless you've got good candidates and an organization. E-mail correspondent Steven put it well: "I arrived recently in Illinois after 17 years in the Boston area. I was active, politically. The Illinois [Republican] Party is impenetrable to the newcomer . . . No reaching out; no organization; no desire. All of the worst that can befall a state party. This is a mess." It's time for the proven failures who are running the party to, if not step aside, then build a major league farm system. That means support the promising, bright and honest young candidates with money, organization and enthusiasm. Finally, it's time to recruit Democrats with a conscience into the Republican cause. These would be the Democrats who are fed up with corruption, higher taxes and waste. There are still a few Democrats around like that. Aren't there?)

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=154829
-- DIERSEN HEADLINE: McGowen asks Uttich: What political party do you think would most closely follow God's son's teachings? DIERSEN ANSWER: The Republican Party, because its platform discourages abortion, discourages homosexual activity, discourages race and gender based preference giving, discourages moral relativism, and discourages dependency on government. Outrageously, the anti-Christian Democrat Party platform all but argues that one gets into heaven by promoting abortion, by promoting homosexual activity, by promoting race and gender based preference giving, by promoting moral relativism, and by forcing others to pay higher taxes. Outrageously, the Democrat Party platform encourages surrender to anti-Christian terrorists who want to destroy America.

(THE LETTER: Letter wasn't at all about political issues - Paula McGowen, Glen Ellyn I am writing to the Fence Post because I have been personally called to respond to the comments of a Martin Uttich from Carol Stream in his Fence Post letter, "Good question on DuPage turning blue," published in the Sunday March 9 Daily Herald. Uttich responded to my Fence Post contribution of Feb. 15. I had commented on quotes attributed to state Sen. Dan Cronin, an Elmhurst Republican and DuPage County GOP chairman, in a previous Daily Herald article by Jake Griffin, where Cronin had stated, "Why would anybody in DuPage County want to turn blue? Why in God's name would they want DuPage to look like Cook County or Springfield?" I had asked why Sen. Cronin had to bring God into this….using the Lord's name in vain. I never addressed any political issues that Martin Uttich brought out in his questions to me. So why, I must ask, is Martin Uttich asking me, "Why do you want DuPage blue? Is it because you want more taxes? Higher crime rates? More corruption? Why? I'm waiting?" Well, Mr. Uttich, please reread my comments, as I haven't advocated any of those things, but I do know right from wrong; wanting only what is right for DuPage County. But, Mr. Uttich, since you brought the subject of politics up, what political party do you think would most closely follow God's son's teachings?)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
-- 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 14th, and 18th Congressional Districts: IL CD race updates - Fran Eaton
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2008/03/il-cd-race-upda.html
(THE ARTICLE: Word is that today 11th CD Republican chiefs are gathering to decide who will be their pick to replace the now-despised Tim Baldermann who backed out of the race shortly after winning the February 5th primary. The choices, we're told, are down to two potential self-funders, Monical's Pizza mogul Harry Bond and cement industry powerhouse Marty Ozinga. IR-touted Adam Kinzinger of Bloomington apparently isn't under consideration this time around -- currently in the military, he's not able to self-fund. Announcement is expected early next week. Whoever they pick will go against a Democratic all out effort to grab up the 11th with State Senator Debbie Halvorson, who's raking in cash from giddy Dems convinced the Obama tsunami will destroy any vulnerable Republicans not nailed down and left standing. And speaking of Congressional controversies, 8th CDers are unhappy today to see their Republican challenger Steve Greenberg tell the Daily Herald that he is more "moderate" than Bean's 2006 challenger David McSweeney. "David was way too far right for the district," Greenberg told the DH. "What people are looking for is someone who is right of center." Greenberg's comments line up with the reason he gave us in February for blowing off an offer to introduce him to our Illinois Review readers. "You know, they're trying to keep me in the middle of the road," he said. I told him its politically deadly in the middle of the road. He chuckled and that was all. Most stunning was that Mr. Greenberg and I had that conversation at a huge pro-life gathering, where he was asking for primary votes just a few days later. I never heard from Greenberg's media guy to arrange an interview . . . so, unless something dramatic changes, 8th CD voters will have to learn about their candidate through other dependable news sources -- you know, like the Daily Herald and the Tribune. As for Mark Kirk in the 10th and Jim Oberweis in the 14th? Locals are concerned about November in both districts. So concerned, in fact, there is now rumor that big bucks may be headed towards not only creating Democratic headaches for 6th CD freshman Congressman Peter Roskam, but also towards the 18th, where State Rep. Aaron Schock hopes to succeed retiring Cong. Ray LaHood. All bets are off right now, until things settle down everywhere and we all get a handle on how these races will actually fall into place. Stay tuned . . .)

http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/napervillesun/news/845988,6_1_NA17_IRAQ_S1.article
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the service's conclusion, attendees signed a letter asking elected officials to bring the conflict to a responsible end. Other groups represented included the West Suburban Faith-Based Peace Coalition, Franciscans of the Western Suburbs, Pax Christi Servants and DuPage Against War Now. Last spring DAWN unsuccessfully tried in nine DuPage townships to have a question asking for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq to be placed on the November 2008 election ballot. The group was formed in 2002 in opposition to the war in Iraq. Karin Edwards, a professor of music at Wheaton College, accompanied service attendees on the piano as they sang songs centering on peace. A member of Lombard Mennonite Church, Edwards said the U.S. military had no right to invade Iraq, even to depose "a brutal dictator," referring to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "Why did we choose that one instead of going after the other ones in the world?" she said. "It was based on oil. Look how slow we were to get involved in the breakup of countries like Yugoslavia and Bosnia.")

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
-- Negative campaigning has negative consequences - Dave Diersen

http://www.gopillinois.com/
(THE COMMENTARY: According to David Mark, negative campaigning includes the use of tactics, such as television and radio ads, mailings, and robo calls, that voters see as misleading, mean-spirited, or immoral. In 2004, after defeating John Borling, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, Steve Rauschenberger, and others in the U.S. Senate primary, Jack Ryan withdrew. The reason he gave for withdrawing was that because so much attention had been drawn to the charges that his former wife had made against him, to defeat Obama, he would have to engage in negative campaigning, something that he would not do. When Hastert announced his retirement, your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, who is a member of the American Association of Political Consultants, joined with others in urging Lauzen and Oberweis to come to an agreement on which one of them would run to fill the vacancy. After it sadly became clear that no such agreement could be reached, I joined with others in urging Lauzen and Oberweis to not engage in negative campaigning. It is unclear who is harmed the most by negative campaigning -- the candidate who is the subject of it, the candidate who engages in it, politics in general, political parties, voters, democracy, or America. Negatives foisted on the winning candidate in a primary election are often foisted on that candidate during the general election. If to win a primary election, a candidate has to engage in negative campaigning that will bring defeat in the general election, it seems that candidate should not run. If one assumes that the candidate who is the subject of the most negative campaigning is harmed the most by it, then, that would help explain a) why Lauzen lost the February 5 primary election and b) why Oberweis lost the March 8 special election. Who encouraged Lauzen to go negative against Oberweis? Who encouraged Oberweis to go negative against Lauzen? Not that it matters, but who went negative first? Who benefited financially from the negative campaigning? Of course, I join with those who urge the Republicans who want to be our next Vice-President to not engage in negative campaigning against others who seek that position. If McCain selects Romney to be his running mate, negative campaigning against Romney will help elect Obama and/or Clinton on November 4.)

Ex-Gov. George Ryan Skipped Over Tony Rezko; Appointed Ex-Sen. Marovitz to Hospital Board

(Springfield, IL) -- The AP's JOHN O'CONNOR unearthed the scoop that former GOP Governor JIM EDGAR nominated TONY REZKO to sit on Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board in 1998, but the Senate declined to confirm him, deferring to the incoming GEORGE RYAN.

Despite the Edgar nugget, the more fascinating revelation in O'Connor's story was that now former and imprisoned Republican Gov. Ryan skipped over Rezko. George Ryan. Ryan appointed former state Sen. BILL MAROVITZ (D-Chicago) to the Board seat in April 1999. Marovitz served until in June 2003.

And, from the Department of Extreme Irony, it was Gov. ROD BLAGOJEVICH's "reform and renewal" policy--in reaction to corruption of the Ryan era--that finally seated Rezko on the hospital board. There ya go.

Obama Answers Trib's Questions

Thanks to CapitolFax for posting the transcripts of the recent interviews given by Sen. Obama to the Tribune and Sun-Times.

I just finished reading through the Tribune transcript, and I think Obama did a pretty good job of answering all of their questions, especially regarding Rezko. Obviously, reporters are going to be digging around to verify Obama's statement that he was not at Trinity Church during the explosive sermons given by Rev. Wright.

Obama said something hilarious during the interview, which I think demonstrates his sense of ease and openness during the interview:

"I've learned how to be a better candidate. At least outside of editorial board meetings I've gotten better, which means keeping my answers shorter. I had a, I think I am, a much better debater in the traditional debate context than I was. I guess after 20 debates either you get better or you're voted off the island."

There's one thing that I have heard neither Obama nor his surrogates say regarding Rev. Wright, and I'm not sure why. Obama has pointed out that there are generational differences between he and Wright, to which he attributes much of Wright's angry rhetoric. What Obama did not say, and I don't understand why, is that Obama probably has a much different view on race issues having been raised by a Kansas school teacher and his white grandparents.

Obama's experience of growing up in racially diverse, racially tolerant Hawaii was also undoubtedly different than Rev. Wright's experience growing up in Philadelphia of the 1940's and 1950's. Like Chicago, Philadephia was on the front line of the fight for racial equality.

Thoughts anyone?

You support my pork, I'll support yours

Note: This is a post from yesterday, but I bumped it up a bit.

David LeitchWanna hear what goes on in Springfield? The intrepid radio reporter Dave Dahl sent me an mp3 file of the Illinois House debating whether or not there should be an opportunity to raise taxes county-wide to pay a $15 appropriation for the downtown museum project.

Listen.

The chair of that session is State Rep. Gary Hannig (D-Litchfield). The lawmaker questioning State Rep. David Leitch (R-73rd District) is State Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock). The roll call of the vote is here (PDF format).

Thanks for the information, Dave. I'd have posted it yesterday, but my Mac is being finicky today.

UPDATE: Upon listening, I was in error. HB4664 is a appropriation bill for a $12 million capital development bond fund to the Department of Natural Resources budget, in "anticipation" of any future capital bill, Leitch states. The money would be used to build a new Lakeview Museum at the former Sears block in downtown Peoria, Leitch said in response to a question from Franks.

Leitch told colleagues that approximately $50 million of the $130-$140 million project would be the Caterpillar visitor center, and noted that this money would come from the same fund that has funded museums in Chicago.

Commenter C.J. is correct. This is very much a case of "you support my pork, and I’ll support your pork.”

Like sausage, you'll never enjoy pork after you watch (or in this case, listen) to it being made.

For example, Leitch also said he has spoken to "Larry Suffredin" about introducing this in the state senate to add "for other projects that might be helpful to other parts of the state."

I thought Suffredin might be a state senator, but the only Larry Suffredin I could find is this guy, a member of the Cook County commission who is also a very powerful lobbyist. How sweet would that be, folks, for a Republican legislator from Peoria to go to a Democratic pol from Cook County to get legislation presented in the Senate. Apparently, Peoria's own State Sen. Dale Risinger (R-37th district) and State Sen. Dave Koehler (D-46th District) aren't Leitch's go-to guys.

"My goal was to get this out now so it is in the hunt, as it will," Leitch says, adding that he's seeking a "critical mass" of other projects to add to the bill to improve chances of passage.

It passed by a 80-20 vote.

Ethanol keeps spreading the misery

We already know that ethanol subsidies encourage farmers to take their land out of the production of real food, thus raising prices, thus increasing hunger and starvation around the world. Turns out that all these wonderful new ethanol production facilities are a huge drain on scarce water resources:

Some corn-producing regions are already scrapping over dwindling supply. The Journal's Joe Barrett recently reported that Kansas is threatening to sue neighboring Nebraska for consuming more than its share of the Republican River. The Grand Forks Herald reports local opposition to a proposed ethanol plant in Erskine, Minnesota, with anti-refinery yard signs sprouting up and residents concerned about well water. Backers of a proposed plant in Jamestown, North Dakota, recently withdrew their application when it became clear that the plant's million-gallon-a-day appetite would drain too much from a local aquifer. In Wisconsin, new ethanol plants are encountering opposition in Sparta and Milton.

Starvation and thirst seem a high price to pay so politicians (both Dem and GOP, both lib and conservative) can pretend the U.S. has a valid energy policy ($4 per gallon, coming soon) while sucking up to agribusiness industries at the same time.

Schock's site lends a hand to Callahan

I looked over Colleen Callahan's official web site, and I have to say that, so far, it lacks real content. Except for providing readers with some contact information and a way to donate, there's not a lot there.

In other words, Aaron Schock's site has Colleen's beat all to Hell. Sorry, guys. Maybe that will change.

But not all is lost. Schock's campaign is so itent on making a case that his huge campaign warchest makes him invulnerable to challengers, the site links to a Springfield State Journal-Register article about how Callahan has to play catch-up in the cash-raising biz.

The problem (for Schock) is that this article didn't just talk about cash. The article humanized Callahan by introducing people to members of her family. I imagine not many people know that her daughter, Brittney Burns, is a top-notch lawyer with tons of experience fighting crime and working with the legislature. Sounds to me like she's be a huge asset to her mom if she gets elected to Congress.

The message seems to be that Schock is the front runner 'cause he has a ton of cash, while Callahan has her smart and politically talented family on her side.

Were I operating her site, I'd be sure to link to the same article.

Dirty tricks on the Web from the Schock campaign? Kinda doubt it ... (UPDATED 2x)

Does Colleen Callahan (Democratic congressional candidate the 18th District) have a campaign Website yet? Anyone who's looking for one might stumble across this one: CallahanforCongress.com.

Methinks it's NOT her site. Except for the disclaimer "Copyright. Callahanforcongress. All rights reserved" and a link to GoDaddy.com, the only content is a picture of a cute little girl (emma.jpg) wearing a shirt with a "Callahan for Congress" decal, complete with a red-white-and-blue Democratic donkey. With a red slash drawn through it. Like in "Democrats prohibited."

Like I said, PROBABLY not the site of someone who is running as a Democrat.

There's a debate going on in the comments section of this post. Someone accused the Aaron Schock (current 92nd district state rep, running for 18th District for the GOP) camp of creating the site. One of my readers posted the WHOIS information for callahanforcongress.com stating that the owner of the site is John Callahan of State College, PA.

I did a Google search. There is a John Callahan with that telephone number. But there's no news articles anywhere about a guy with that name from that city who's running or thinking of running for Congress.
The mayor of Bethlehem, PA, is also named John Callahan. He might conceivably be interested in running for Congress, but one would think he would have an address in Bethlehem. And as a Democrat, I doubt he'd post a pic of anyone wearing a slashed-out Democratic Party symbol.

The site was registered on Jan. 17. I and other media broke the story that she was running on Jan. 24, but it was common knowledge amongst the political illuminati for a some time before then. So it'c conceivable someone in the Schock campaign or someone who wanted to help decided to throw together a placeholder Web site in a dastardly plot to deny Colleen a simple and easy-to-remember domain name for her campaign. And with the fast financial resources at their disposal, they found some dude in State College to be their willing thrall.

Yeah. It's possible. Seems an awful lot of trouble to go through when colleenforcongress.com is still available. As is vote4callahan.com.

A quick phone call tomorrow will clear up the confusion. I hope. "Cause I don't want to spend the next eight months debating silly crap like this.

UPDATE: Left a voicemail message at 11 a.m.

UPDATE: Courtesy of Dave Dahl, I now have two links for Colleen Callahan campaign: Citizens for Callahan and Colleen Callahan for Congress. I'll look 'em over and pass judgment later today. It looks like the nefarious scheme to deprive her of a campaign website has failed.

Wright not wrong on question of race

Listening to audio of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, he sounds almost like Adolf Hitler – in that I mean both men have a commanding presence that forces you to listen and a gravelly voice that can reach such high decibel levels that makes everything they say sound so harsh.

But when one actually reads the words spoken on video tapes that are causing some people to say that Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has a “racist” minister, anyone of sense would have to conclude the Rev. Wright is justified in much of what he says.

We have a race problem in this country. It is a blot on what otherwise is the great existence of the United States of America. While it might not be as blatantly violent as it was decades ago, we’re not going to be able to move beyond racial issues until we honestly address how bad the problem was.

Too many of the people who are trying to turn the retired Rev. Wright into a political issue seem to be of the type who would prefer to ignore race out of some hope that the issue will go away and things can go back to the way they used to be – before all the loud-mouth civil rights types forced us to pay attention to the problem.

That’s basically what Wright is making us do when he says things like, “Hillary was not a black boy raised in a single-parent home. Barack was.”

And when he talks about the United States’ involvement in activities that are construed by some people of the world as just as harsh and violent as any of the terrorist activity we condemn, he is touching on a vein of thought with some validity.

Let’s not forget the reason former Iraq leader Saddam Hussein ever rose from the ranks of third-rate dictators to become a serious threat to world peace is because the U.S. military backed him against Iran when it served our country’s interests during the decade-long Iran-Iraq War. Then, that fully armed pit bull turned around and bit us on the tushy.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we’re indignant,” Wright said. “Because the stuff we have done overseas has now brought right back into our own front yards.”

And giving us a touch of Malcolm X beyond the version that filmmaker Spike Lee tried giving us several years ago, Wright adds, “America’s chickens are coming home to roost.”

Now some people are going to be upset that Wright has compared the 1945 U.S. bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic weapons to the 2001 terrorist hits on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. How dare he make such an “un-American” statement!

But it is not a new thought. It’s not even terribly original. I recall a professor two decades ago at Illinois Wesleyan University (then and now, a very Midwestern place) tell us during a U.S. history course that when it came to deadly use of nuclear weapons, the scorecard for mankind read, “Harry S Truman – 2, Rest of World – 0.”

Admittedly, this professor wasn’t a Truman fan, and I know the arguments that use of the bomb saved lives by ending World War II more quickly. But the statement was a valid attempt to force us to consider the consequences of actions and judge for ourselves whether a positive outcome ever justifies the use of horrific means.

Now I understand that Obama on Friday made something of a public statement intended to put some distance between himself and Wright.

He said the private conversations the two men had were for personal guidance and never delved into the type of fiery rhetoric being criticized now. He said he would have publicly criticized such talk had he ever heard it personally.

But I really don’t think Obama has anything to be apologetic about. I was glad to hear that he is not totally denouncing Wright.

In listening to the so-called controversial recordings that some people would like to think of as more offensive than the Nixon tapes, the closest I can come to a statement to criticize Wright on is his comments about race and gender.

“Barack knows what it means to be a black man living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people,” Wright said, adding later, “Hillary has never had her people defined as a non-person.

“Who cares what a poor black man has to face every day in a country and in a culture controlled by rich white people?”

While he’s right about the situation of African-American people in this country, there have been eras in our country’s story when people of Hillary’s gender were considered little more than non-persons.

One could just as easily make the statement that Barack has never had his gender defined as a non-person, and it would be just as accurate. Of course, that’s what we count on Michelle to be there for – to give him that bit of an intelligent female perspective whenever the testosterone levels of Team Obama get to be a little too high.

In fact, it is this balance between the inequities suffered by women and black people that I see as being behind the whole flap earlier this week that resulted in Geraldine Ferraro having to step down from her un-paid post as a Clinton campaign adviser.

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position (as front-runner in the Democratic presidential primary),” Ferraro said. “If he was a woman, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is, and the country is caught up in the concept.”

On a certain level, Ferraro (who herself was the first woman to be chosen by a major political party to run for vice president – remember 1984?) is absolutely correct.

The “country” is caught up in the “concept” of Obama-mania, which could result in the first non-white president of the United States. (I don’t want to hear about how he’s bi-racial, which makes him part white. Only half-wits who have a problem with it seriously bring that issue up).

Obama-mania is so intense that a segment of the liberal population that normally would be very receptive to the first serious campaign of a woman to be U.S. president doesn’t want to hear about her.

Clinton, who had hoped to campaign as the Democratic darling who would advance the country’s gender preferences into the 21st Century, instead is reduced to having to be the candidate of the political establishment. The progressives have turned elsewhere to the point that if she does manage to win election in November – the bulk of liberal talk is going to be about how we lost the chance to have an African-American president, not how we finally have a woman.

That fact has to be frustrating to Clinton’s hard-core fans, and all I hear in Ferraro’s comments to a California newspaper is that frustration being articulated. I don’t hear a racist, the way some people try to portray it.

I also don’t hear a racist when I read the words of Wright. When I listen to the words of Wright, I might think that someone has gone off their medication, but then second thoughts make me realize his reasoning, and that he might actually have a legitimate point.

-30-

EDITOR’S NOTE: I realize Wright used the word “n----r” during one of his sermons. The UPI Stylebook (which I use as a guide in editing this site) says, “Do not use racially derogatory terms unless they are part of a quotation that is essential to the story.” I honestly believe that particular quote was NOT essential to understanding what Wright is about, and that the only reason you have heard it on television newscasts is because some half-wit TV producer is infatuated with so-called “dirty” words.
