Pro-Choice Republican Topinka
Today, Judy Baar Topinka officially begins her run for governor. She has the support of Jim Edgar, who will be serving as her campaign chairman. This will instantly make her the Republican frontrunner to replace Governor Rod Blagojevich.
However, her announcement does not come without problems. Pro-choice groups are demanding she clarify her position on abortion. Although Republicans in Illinois tend to be slightly more moderate compared with there national counterparts, I think Topinka will only lose votes if she brings up this topic.
With abortion being predominately a federal issue, will this have any effect on her candidacy?

But the point of the questioning is because if Roe is overturned then abortioon becomes a state issue. And the Governor of Illinois must indicate to the voters how he or she will deal with legislation passed in response to the overturning of Roe. It is not too much for voters to ask.
With 3 conservatives in the race, she stands a good chance of winning.
This is to bad for Republicans, as she will destroy Republican turnout, dragging down 3 or 4 house and senate seats with her eventual loss to Blago.
Blago and Topinka are virtually indistinguishable. Neither is Moderate, both are Liberal.
Both will hike income & sales taxes dramatically next term with out one iota of spending reform.
Both will continue public pension largess.
Both will continue "pay to play" inside deals.
Frankly, Topinka's best bet for ousting Blago (should she win the nomination) is Democrat crossovers who see her as a better bet for business as usual.
This is one conservative who will endorse Rod if she wins.
Judgedoe,
You hit the nail on the head. If that question is not asked in primary and general election debates, then those running the debates are doing a disservice to the peoples of IL.
Extreme,
We will definitely take you up on that and we expect it in writing and on the radio.
Thanks,
Some conservatives may disagree with her position (against partial birth abortion, for parental consent), but her position on this issue has been consistent, and appears to the voting public to be the middle of the road position.
Amazing too that her consent position is more pro-life than many critics, who would settle for mere notification. The pro-choice dustup will help her in the primary.
As for "reformers" who will bolt, or vote for Blago if their candidate doesn't win- that shows *real* character, principle, and integrity.
Ah, Topinka-the name the strikes fear in the hearts of her competitors.
-Another conservative for Topinka
GREAT, Slim Jim was also Bush's IL campaign chairman and you can see what a smashing job he did:
V.P.Gore 2000 IL plurality 569,605
Sen. Kerry 2004 IL plurality 545,604 over a sitting President.
Keep up the good work!
If JBT is nominated this is one CONSERVATIVE republican who will not vote for her.
Why should I? What will change?
Instead of one wacko hairdo, you will get another wacko hairdo.
It's better that the terrible officeholders are Democrats, rather than RINOs.
Anon 2:16- good questions. If you've already decided to not vote for the frontrunner, why should you expect your vote to change anything?
You should get a toupee with some brains in it.
I don't mean to whine but Illinois has bigger problems than abortion. Of course if the Democrats hype that up then thier guy won't have to talk about the real problems we are facing. How are we going to pay back all of this money this governor has borrowed to pay the bills. What are we going to do to come up with new revenue. Now to close this I have seen a couple of you saying if JBT wins you will vote for Blago and then say you are a republican.Well if you go to thier side then that makes you one of them.A DEMOCRAT.
Anonymous 2:16 I would guess you are not a conservative Republican but a right-winger who wants his way no matter what.
